Three minutes later, after taking a fist to the head from Makarov, Kira nodded earnestly. "Got it, Master. We'll make sure to bring Natsu and Lucy back safe and sound. You can count on us!"
"Hmph!" Makarov took a swig of his drink. "Get serious, kid. That place is no joke! Up until ten years ago, no one in Fiore even knew there were people living deep in Zonia. This mission is fishy. I was planning to send Gildarts once he got back, or have you go with Laxus and Erza. But now, with this mess…"
"What, so you're saying Gildarts alone is worth the three of us?" Kira grumbled.
"I said get serious!" Makarov bonked him on the head again.
Rubbing his sore noggin, Kira muttered, "Alright, alright, I get it! We've got a big group this time, so relax, Master. Sure, Laxus bailed, but with Natsu and Lucy already out there, they can more or less make up for it!"
"Exactly, Master!" Erza chimed in. "I'm annoyed at Natsu's recklessness too, but safety shouldn't be an issue. Natsu's strong!"
Erza had confidence in Natsu's strength, especially since they'd clashed not too long ago.
Her real concern, though, was Natsu's brain—or lack thereof. S-Class missions weren't like regular ones. Clients often left out key details, and unexpected problems could pop up at any moment.
Sure, Lucy was sharp, but her strength was still lacking.
"Alright then—Erza, Gray, Cana, Loke, Elfman, let's move out!"
At Makarov's insistence, the six formed a temporary team to provide backup. Their goal wasn't just to drag Natsu and Lucy back but to complete the mission successfully. Once a job was accepted, Fairy Tail had to see it through to protect the guild's reputation.
On top of that, Kira and Erza were tasked with investigating the secrets of Zonia Peak.
"But can we make it in time?" Cana asked.
Kira flashed a grin. "Don't worry—we've got an airship!"
In a world that poured most of its skill points into magic and skimped on tech, magical airships were a rare sight.
From Kira's memory, among Fiore's legitimate guilds, only Blue Pegasus had a confirmed magical airship, the Christina, shaped like a pegasus. It could carry passengers and even had magic cannons for offense.
But thanks to Kira, the master of magical gadgets, Fairy Tail's crew was about to experience their own airship ride.
Unlike a flying carpet—a simple enchanted rug with no extra features or flair—an airship was a full-fledged, fully equipped aerial vehicle.
Kira's airship was 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, designed to resemble a golden fairy. Its face was at the bow, a bit quirky-looking, but no one cared. After all, no one in this world had seen a real fairy, or the guild wouldn't be called Fairy Tail. The guild's emblem was proudly displayed at the front.
The airship's sides mimicked a bird's structure, with lightweight yet sturdy wings to maintain balance in the air. Below each wing was a row of ten magic cannons, each with a 50-centimeter barrel. One press of a button, and they could level half a town.
The tail, though odd-looking, served as the engine, doubling as a magic absorber and converter to power the airship's movement and attacks.
Most of Kira's gadgets had two key features: the ability to absorb ambient magic from the environment and convert it into energy, and a magic storage system.
These features were why his items sold like hotcakes, even in neighboring countries.
Whether it was vehicles like airships, cars, or boats, or magical weapons like staves, guns, or armor, the ability to absorb, convert, and store magic was essential.
Kira wasn't sure if other magical items in this world had similar tech, but these were his own inventions. Sure, they were a bit rough around the edges due to limited research time and manpower, but for now, they got the job done.
On the airship, aside from Erza and Gray, who'd ridden flying carpets before, everyone else was wide-eyed with awe and envy.
Cana, as usual, sprawled on the floor with a drink in hand. "You had something this cool and didn't bring it out sooner?"
Loke smirked. "Knowing him, he'd probably say, 'My gadgets have to be shown off one at a time, or the rest would just gather dust in storage,' right?"
Gray chuckled. "Your personality's an open book, Kira."
"What can I say? I'm an honest guy!" Kira said, puffing out his chest. "Besides being a mage, I'm a renowned magic merchant. Integrity is my number-one rule in business!"
His words came out smooth, without a hint of hesitation or guilt, as if he truly believed them.
"That's Kira for you! A real man!" Elfman boomed. "And this airship? Also a real man!"
"Quiet down, all of you!" Erza snapped, her serious demeanor cutting through the chatter. "Listen up! Our top priority is to bring back Natsu, Lucy, and Happy for taking an S-Class mission without permission. If they've already met with the client, we'll take over the job to protect Fairy Tail's reputation!"
Kira blinked, confused. "What are you talking about, Erza? Aren't we going to investigate the legend of the Celestial Maiden?"
Clearly, he'd already tossed Makarov's orders out the window.
Gray grinned. "Yeah, exactly! Forget Natsu. Just bring Lucy back, and we're good!"
Cana and Loke exchanged knowing smiles, clearly unbothered about Natsu. Only Elfman, ever the straightforward one, piped up. "Natsu's strong! It's just a beast-slaying job. Even if it's S-Class, no need to worry."
"In a place like that, anything could happen," Erza countered. "More importantly, this is a clear violation of guild rules. We can't let him run wild like this!"
…
Back at the guild's tavern, Makarov sat with a troubled expression. These kids were getting harder to manage by the day. He wasn't even sure if they'd listened to a word he said.
After some thought, he could only console himself with, "The others might not take it seriously, but Erza should be reliable."
Unlike Makarov, Mirajane seemed in high spirits, cheerfully tending to her waitress duties.
"Mirajane, weren't you all worried earlier? Why're you so chipper now?" Wakaba asked, puffing on his pipe and sipping his drink as he watched her weave through the crowd.
Mirajane turned with a smile. "Well, even though Kira and Erza are worried about Natsu, they're heading out to help him avoid punishment under the guise of scolding him. It's really heartwarming, don't you think?"
"Plus, Elfman's with them. As his big sister, I'm proud no matter how you look at it!"
If Elfman were here, he'd probably be bawling, shouting, "Sis, I won't let you down!"
But Wakaba, the old chain-smoker, wasn't one for sappy moments. "Is that so?" he teased with a grin. "Knowing those kids, they might just be going to pick a fight."
"No way!" Mirajane huffed, hands on her hips. "They might act like that, but when it matters, they're super reliable!"
"Hahaha, you're too kind, Mirajane!" Wakaba laughed.
Makarov caught the exchange. They say old age brings wisdom, and at over 80, he wasn't blind to what Mirajane saw. It's exactly why he thought these kids were getting tougher to handle.
"Let's hope they make it in time to bring Natsu back… and don't cause too much trouble," he muttered.
Those guys were known for wrecking entire towns… Wait, no, this mission's in the snowy mountains. No towns to destroy. They should be fine!
With that thought, Makarov's anxious heart calmed. With so many of them heading out, an S-Class mission should be no problem, right?
"Mirajane, another barrel of ale!" he called.
…
"Alright, forget Natsu and Lucy for now. Let's solve the mystery of the legend first!" Erza said, happily munching on a dessert Kira had brought aboard. "Once we get there, let's go all out!"
"Heck yeah!"
"Sweet!"
"Let's do this!"
