As Kira and Natsu clashed in a fiery exchange, Gajeel was struggling to break through the wind barrier and rejoin the fight.
Clang! Clang!
"Damn, what a pain in the ass! These attacks aren't breaking my defense, but they still hurt like hell!" Gajeel grumbled, barely keeping up with the invisible onslaught. The unseen wind blades made it impossible for him to advance toward Kira.
His dragon-scale armor was useless against the intangible wind blades. Whenever one struck, it felt like a real blade slicing into regular skin—excruciating, yet leaving no visible wounds.
"Like hell I'm gonna let some wind trap hold me back!" Gajeel growled, steeling himself. Ignoring the pain, he decided to charge straight through. If he could take down Kira, the wind blades would vanish on their own.
With a roar, Gajeel sprouted thick iron rods from his body, deflecting the next wave of wind blades. He surged forward, breaking through the barrier, and launched himself at Kira. "Iron Dragon's Lance: Demon Logs!"
A green magic circle flashed briefly as his right hand transformed into a sharp, black iron spearhead. In midair, he thrust rapidly, creating a flurry of countless spear shadows that formed a deadly, dark iron flower.
The explosive force sent irregular gusts of air rippling outward, and Gajeel's relentless momentum thrilled the crowd, sparking excited chatter.
"Whoa, that's incredible! Isn't that Gajeel, the 'Iron Dragon' from Phantom Lord?"
"Is that Dragon Slayer magic? It's my first time seeing it!"
"How do you even fight someone who can turn their whole body into iron?"
But in the next moment, to the shock of thousands, Gajeel's assault came to a screeching halt. He froze in midair, like a fly caught in a spider's web, completely immobilized.
Gajeel's attack had been powerful and fast, no question. But Kira was stronger—and faster.
The moment Gajeel deflected the wind blades, Kira read his intentions and acted without hesitation. Instead of retreating, he pressed forward.
"Wind Rope!"
Invisible ropes materialized in the air, weaving into a tough, intricate net, lying in wait for its prey. Stronger than spider silk and as chaotic as a child's scribbles, the ropes ensnared Gajeel the moment he lunged. By the time he realized what was happening, it was too late.
The deadly iron flower wilted instantly, the flurry of spear shadows fading away, leaving only a single, struggling spearhead trapped in the air.
Wind magic was unique compared to other elemental magics. It was intangible, unlike the physicality of earth or water, and not made of raw energy like fire or lightning. At its core, wind magic manipulated airflow—gases. And since air was everywhere except in specific environments like underwater or a vacuum, wind mages didn't need to spend time moving their magic through space like other mages. They could summon it instantly at a chosen spot, shaving off precious seconds that could decide a fight.
"He… stopped?"
The thousands of spectators stared at the screen in confusion, watching Gajeel's ferocious charge halt abruptly, leaving him suspended in midair.
"What happened? Why did his attack just stop?"
Thankfully, Makarov, seated at the judges' table, chimed in with an explanation. "That's Kira using wind magic…"
With the veteran mage's breakdown, the crowd finally got it. This wasn't some staged act—these three mages were just that strong. Or rather, Kira was on another level entirely, pulling off a magic battle so complex it flew over their heads.
"So, how's it feel to be strung up like that?" Kira teased, eyeing the immobilized Gajeel. His mind wandered to the original timeline, where the Thunder God Tribe had been strung up similarly. If he hadn't warned everyone back then, Levy might've ended up nailed to a tree. So, in a way, this was justified, right?
But since that event never happened here, was this… maybe a bit much? What if people thought he had some weird fetish? Is this technically bondage?
"Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame!" Natsu roared, striking again.
Kira reacted swiftly, his ice-armored form gleaming as his sky-blue eyes darkened. With a wave of his hand, a torrent of freezing air surged forth, whipping his red hair wildly.
"Blizzard!"
The clash of hot and cold magic disrupted the surrounding airflow, inadvertently loosening the wind net enough for Gajeel to break free. But being saved by Natsu didn't exactly thrill him.
Kira clapped mockingly. "Nice one, Natsu! Still got some fight in you?"
"Hell yeah!" Natsu laughed boisterously. "I've still got a secret move up my sleeve!"
Secret move? What secret move could you possibly have? Kira' heart skipped a beat.
At this point in the timeline, what could Natsu have? Lightning Flame Dragon Mode and Fire Dragon King Mode were triggered under specific circumstances and seemed like one-offs. Yet, Natsu always managed to tap into them again later, which didn't make logical sense.
Kira could only chalk it up to Natsu retaining a "spark" of those modes, reigniting them with his own flames in later battles. But right now, Natsu hadn't accessed either mode yet. The only thing Kira could think of was Dragon Force—the one mode Natsu had experienced but couldn't enter at will.
What if Natsu, having faced a dragon already, had figured out how to tap into Dragon Force freely? Kira didn't know what Natsu's "secret move" was, but he trusted Natsu wouldn't lie about something like this.
"Don't let me down, Natsu!" Kira challenged.
"OH YEAH! I'M FIRED UP!" Natsu bellowed, his emotions fueling his magic as flames roared around him, leaving Kira in awe.
"Turning emotions into power—now that's something else," Kira remarked. "Wonder when I'll ever pull that off."
He knew it was unlikely for him, though. His laid-back, "slacker" personality and versatile magic made it hard to get worked up enough to channel raw emotion. "Guess that's the price of being too strong," he muttered with a smirk.
Across from him, Natsu had completed his transformation.
He looked completely different. His pink hair flared upward like flames, his face marked with bold, fiery red patterns. Strange magical runes appeared on his exposed arms, and his entire body was cloaked in a visible, crimson aura of magic power. Even his black clothes glowed red under the intense energy, with only his signature white scarf unchanged.
His eyes gleamed with the same red light. "Flame Mode!!"
Gajeel, nearby, was floored. "Is this… like my dragon-scale armor?" he wondered, but quickly dismissed the thought. The two were on different levels. If his iron scales boosted his strength by 10%, Natsu's state was pushing at least 50%.
The transformation stunned the thousands in the stands, as well as Makarov, Happy, and Droy at the judges' table. The crowd, unfamiliar with Natsu's full power, cheered wildly, thinking he was pulling out his trump card. But Makarov and Happy, who knew Natsu best, were shocked. They suspected this was either a battlefield breakthrough or something he'd only recently mastered. Happy, who was with Natsu daily, had never seen this form before.
"Go, Natsu!" Happy cheered instinctively, ever the loyal partner.
"You're saying this is the first time you've seen him like this?" Droy asked.
"Yeah," Happy admitted, his eyes sparkling. "Maybe the fight just now pushed him to break through!"
Droy grinned. "Could be! He is the prototype for the Flame Emperor, after all!"
