{AURORA'S POV}
The moment I broke away from the tree where I hid behind, the world narrowed to a single sight.
Iris.
Or what was left of her.
I dropped to my knees beside her body, a choked cry ripping from my throat.
Her bones were charred black. Her flesh shredded into unrecognizable scraps still clinging in grotesque pieces.
She didn't even look human anymore and yet my heart screamed her name.
"Iris…" My fingers trembled as I reached out but I couldn't bring myself to touch her. If I did, then maybe I'd have to accept that she was gone.
"Iris!" Kai's voice echoed through the chaos.
I looked up to see him running toward us, until an arrow hissed from the treeline and buried deep into his thigh. He screamed in agony as he collapsed to the dirt.
"KAI!" I screamed as I ran toward him.
A ring of hunters emerged from the treeline, surrounding us. Their crossbows were loaded and aimed, boots crunching slowly closer, careful as if cornering a wild beast.
