The black folder slammed onto the desk, and the sound echoed through the room like a gunshot. Papers slid across the polished surface, fluttering, whispering secrets that made my stomach twist. Lucien Merek leaned back slightly, a calm predator watching a cornered animal.
I took a slow breath, trying to steady my shaking hands. My heart raced against my temples. Ares's presence behind me was solid, a wall of heat and protection, but it couldn't erase the cold that crept into my chest.
"You really thought you could sneak into my headquarters without consequence?" Lucien said softly, almost amused. "Do you understand the position you've put yourself in?"
I lifted my chin, ignoring the quiver in my voice. "I understand perfectly. You underestimated me. That was your mistake."
