The Dai Fencing Hall was another architecturalmasterpiece in the form of grand and commanding building with a unique domed roof reaching greater heights.
Nestled within a beautiful landscape, the hall was sheltered by majestic pine trees and surrounded by luxurious gardens showcasing the vibrant colors of autumn leaves and delicate spring flowers as unique thriving combination. Its location was among the palace's key features of landmark triumvirate that also comprised of Dai Garden Hall at its central core, and Pyramid Temple Shrine on opposite left.
The entire building was architecturally complex, with its sky-blue roof and pure white cylindrical structure. It was carefully planned, having a central main hall as well as separate chambers that acted as specific arenas for both commanders and generals to exhibit their swordplay and fencing skills in various groups, pair, and individual practices.
The large hall could accommodate a single or various groups sparring sessions, which helped build a sense of camaraderie among warriors. These sessions involved disciplined and traditional training, as well as one-on-one duels that tested skill and agility while atmosphere in separate chambers was filled with a stronger sense of dedication and respect for all combatants. Overall, it was an environment where the legacy of fencing was not only preserved but also continuously developing.
In Dai Dynasty, fencing went beyond being just a sport. It was both a warm-up and a preliminary test for intense sword fights and mecha combat. Typically, two to four fighters would face off, either in duels or small-scale challenges. These encounters not only demonstrated their skills, but their proficiency in battle and warfare.
The strategic moves, quick defences, and accurate attacks displayed during those sessions were perceived as signs of a warrior's readiness for battle. Therefore, fencing became a crucial stage of preparation, where the fundamentals of martial skill were established and evaluated before the warriors would face the real challenges.
The fencers in the Dai Dynasty fencing hall donned a coordinated and unique attire that was both functional and stylish. Their outfits consisted of all-white polyester jackets and knee-length trousers designed to withstand the sport's physical demands. They also wore sturdy gloves that provided both comfort and protection for their hands.
The crowning piece was the black and white fencing head masks, featuring a metal wire mesh construction adding an air of mystery to their appearance while protecting their faces from the intensity of the fencing bouts.
Amidst the reverent atmosphere of a singular fencing venue, two noble combatants sparred against each other with their display of agility, reflexes and swordsmanship, showcasing not only their mastery of kendo swords with illuminating blue blades but also their unique approaches that mirrored their individual expertise and personality.
One stood out as the dominant force in the arena, employing the aggressive techniques of Jian Shi Ji Jian saber-style fencing. This choice was strongly influenced by the historical preferences of the Dai culture, which flavored male warriors. With utmost accuracy and elegance in his maneuvers, his every action showcased his complete expertise in saber combat, even when using the kendo blade.
In contrast, his adversary embraced the subtlety and complexity of Zhong Jian Shi epee fencing, a technique preferred mostly by women fighters in intricate realms of intermediate and advanced combat situations. With poise and calculated intention, the epee became an extension of the fencer's skill and strategic prowess.
The duel of blades between these two experts with different approaches showcased a harmonious display of deliberate attacks, defences, and counterattacks, with every action highlighting the distinct attributes of their style and personality.
While saber combatant performed a series of precise and potent movements, including lunges, extensions, parries, feints, and beat attacks, his opponent responded with nimble agility, defensive blocks, footwork and lightning-fast counterattacks, creating a more defensive yet equally lethal display of fighting symphony.
As a result, the fencing arena was now abuzz with the dynamic interplay of Yin and Yang entities. Tradition and innovation converged, determination and force against each other, creating a multifaceted tapestry of duel that comprised of history, diversity, and individual mastery.
Regardless of their gender and distinct personalities, both displayed an equal level of their abilities. The way they skilfully inter switched between offensive and defensive tactics demonstrated the intense training and discipline they had received throughout their years from child to adult, as if they were engaged in a genuine duel rather than another practice match.
As in striking, leaping, blocking and bending from various angles, utilizing a combination of upper, central, and lower body cuts to outmanoeuvre each other and gain the upper hand.
Just as they appeared to be evenly matched, two pigeons suddenly flew into the hall out of nowhere and exited through the other windows. But even so, their unexpected presence and flapping wings distracted one of them.
Taking advantage of this, the other in saber proficiency swiftly delivered what could be killer blow in real duel, disarming and forcing his opponent to fall upon knees.
With his right hand, the victor aimed the blade directly at his opponent's neck, while with his left, he removed the fencing helmet mask, revealing his face of esteemed Majesty and Emperor Dai Zhong. This unexpected revelation clearly proved his competency in both duel and mental strength, despite him already well-guarded.
Next using his blade, he lifted and removed his opponent's fencing mask, revealing her face of his own sister, Royal Highness and Princess Dai Yu. The sudden realization that they were siblings sparring each other - added a deeper, emotional layer to the duel, underscoring the intricate ties between family bonds and the noble pursuit of martial prowess within the Dai Dynasty.
"Dai Er, you have made remarkable progress in your abilities since our childhood and teenage sparring sessions," He praised her initially to motivate her, but then proceeded to highlight her shortcomings. "However, your weaknesses have remained consistent. You still tend to be driven by emotions and easily lose focus."
"Thank you for showing me the way, your Majesty." She expressed her gratitude as she got to her knees and stood on level ground with her brother.
Acknowledging the unexpected intrusion of pigeons during their sparring session, Dai Zhong, with a measured tone, revealed his intentional act.
"I deliberately released the pigeons here to test your mental strength." His words carried the weight of a valuable lesson as her brother and mentor. "Remember this, whether in battle or combat, the goal is to win regardless of who your opponent is. Nothing else matters."
After hearing her brother's words, her expression turned solemn. While she recognized her limitations in the pursuit of martial excellence, compassion remained as integral part of her character. The idea of achieving victory at any cost, which reflected her brother's ambitious nature, was not a mindset she readily accepted.
Unlike her brother, whose determination to win was evident even as child, her motivation to train and participate in combat was driven by her desire to improve herself and develop her skills, rather than an unrelenting pursuit of success and devoid of emotion. This difference in their perspectives was clearly emphasized by the hardships their family had experienced and status, making her journey a complex and personal one.
"We wrap it up for today." He declared, concluding the sparring session with a warm, brotherly smile as he sheathed the kendo blade.
One of the servants handed him the other weapon and he in turn tossed it back to his sister who caught it by its handle and did the exact same thing.
"You've barely recovered from fatigue and aren't fully fit. You need more rest and nourishment."
"Your Majesty..." She decided to cut to the chase, upon realizing that these settings allowed for a more informal tone compared to the Imperial Courts.
"You may dispense with the formalities and call me brother here," He interrupted with the knowledge that they were in fencing hall instead of Imperial Courts.
"Brother," Dai Yu readdressed him as told before inquiring. "I need to ask you something."
Dai Zhong turned his attention to his sister, setting aside the kendo blade he had just used. "What is it?"
"Is it true that General Xue Lei has been arrested for illegal possession of Shibeibu enemy weapons early this morning?"
"Who told you?" His brother's tone suddenly turned serious exactly as she expected.
"One of his servants Ah Nan came to my chamber and informed me." She answered as-a-matter of fact.
"He should not bother you in the first place, considering that he doesn't work for you directly. I get someone to enlighten him on his role as loyal palace servant." He asserted, his expression revealing a hint of displeasure.
"Brother, General Xue Lei has always been loyal and patriotic commander to our Dai Dynasty." Dai Yu continued. "If not for him and his men, our dynasty will not stand any chance and we will not even be here today, considering that he rescued us from invasion when we were kids."
"Dai Er, you're getting too emotional again," He sized her up. "Especially about the past! No doubt he has served our parents well and saved us but that was the past. Now Advisor Chen Xi arrested him for possessing enemy weapons upon investigating his chamber. Since we both are members of royal Dai family, you know as well as I do that is illegal and carries a death penalty."
"But…" Dai Yu attempted to voice her opinion only to be halted by her brother who again interrupted her.
"Say no more! I know of his importance and contributions too. But as Majesty, I must be impartial. Both the evidence and witnesses are there at time of Advisor Chen's discovery.
About our older brother Dai Chong, if I am being honest, I have been more anxious than you. But such things cannot be rushed as compared to Shibeibu, our strength and firepower are severely limited.
However, I promise you I'll find a way and soon we'll be reunited as family."
"But brother, that was what Premier Hu said before I left for the Academy, and when you visited me during my training -"
"Please, sister, save your breath and focus on your well-being. I've already said what you need to hear, and do not like to repeat myself."
Turning to both his servants who had earlier escorted her, he instructed: "The Highness is getting tired. Please escort her back to her room for shower, rest and recovery."
With that said, he simply turned and exited the fencing hall, as though the conversation never took place, besides their earlier sparring sessions.
Premier Hu's residence, situated in the Dai Capital City's vast central sector for those in highest authority, presented a strong and formidable position.
Surrounded by towering pine and oak trees, the residence was within its natural shield of secrecy and seclusion. A mini-hangar bay and facilities housing six hovercrafts, twenty hoverbikes, and ten Gladiator MK-1 mecha units further accentuated the technological prowess and military might at his disposal. The grandeur was extended by an 8km arch-bridge connecting from there, across small reservoir to the residence, symbolizing a majestic gateway to power.
Its exterior structure exuded an aura of authority and military strength. The roofs, painted completely blue from the Dai Dynasty slogan colours and blended perfectly with the skies, stood proudly above sturdy walls that housed rows of ten imperial guards stationed at the gates and doorway. Clad in standard blue and white Dai battle armor, they signified a vigilant presence, ready to defend the residence against any potential threat.
Inside, a magnificent central corridor established an atmosphere of luxury and power. Servants' living quarters, protected by faithful Dai soldiers, highlighted the significance of security within the residence. The meeting room for conferences, decorated with unicorn symbol representing the Dai Dynasty, acted as the command center for strategic planning and decision-making. A spacious terrace, protected by an automatic security-protected shelter dome door, offered him and those he invited a sweeping vista of his realm, including the vibrant forest, the hangar bay, and the arch-bridge.
The evident authority and impact the Dai chancellor possessed in his domain were exhibited by even Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan himself being summoned.
Earlier he received notification from two of the Dai guards that Premier Hu wanted to see him immediately. Given the fact that his rank was higher in Dai Dynasty hierarchy as head of Imperial Royal Circle, he had to accede.
As the hovercraft descended and landed upon the designated pad, he was escorted by six Dai royal guards, the house comes alive with activity, underscoring Premier Hu's main role in the political landscape.
Navigating through the expansive corridors alongside the commander and his escort of eight guards, Teng Yuan proceeded to the heart of Premier Hu's residence - the ground floor hall chamber.
Within the chamber, Premier Hu sat upon his throne upon the podium, flanked by twin dark-blue robed and completely masked elite bodyguards. Such symbolism, coupled with the imposing presence of the guards, reinforced his position as head of Imperial Royal Circle. The scenario served as visual representation of political power play within Dai Dynasty, with him at its helm.
Upon entering, Teng Yuan was met with the direct gaze of Grand Chancellor, who awaited his arrival. Despite the absence of his distinctive turban hat, the chancellor's appearance remained formidable. His short dark hair, well-groomed beard, and penetrating gaze conveyed an air of authority.
Clad in sky-blue attire with a dark blue tunic, he outwardly resembled an ordinary official. However, the grandeur of his residence and the formidable assembly of guards surrounding him hinted at his true influence and power.
As Teng Yuan stood before him, the atmosphere in the hall chamber was charged with a palpable tension. The presence of the chancellor, coupled with the meticulously arranged security detail, underscored the gravity of the situation. Despite his seemingly ordinary appearance, Premier Hu emanated an aura of calculated authority.
"Greetings, Grand Chancellor." He offered a respectful bow, a gesture that belied the reluctance he felt in his heart. Duty compelled him to acknowledge the chancellor's higher position in the Dai Imperial Royal Circle hierarchy, despite any reservations he might harbour.
The Grand Chancellor acknowledged the gesture with a nod and a friendly smile, bridging the formality with an air of approachability. Then he rose and approached him, beckoning him to do the same and stand on equal footing by saying, "You may dispense with the formalities, Chief Advisor Li."
"Thank you, Grand Chancellor." Teng Yuan expressed his gratitude with a respectful bow before rising to his feet. Seizing the opportunity to address the purpose of the summon, he inquired, "May I ask why you want to see me?"
Premier Hu, maintaining a friendly smile, gracefully walked back to his throne. From the right outstretched armrest of the imposing throne, he retrieved what appeared to be a digital tablet. Extending the device toward Teng Yuan, the chancellor responded to the inquiry with a look of forthcoming transparency.
Upon looking at the tablet screen, this was what was written:
By Decree Of The Majesty - Emperor Dai Zhong:
Upon investigation conducted by Advisor and Decree Reader Chen Xi and his men, they discovered Shibeibu enemy weapons in General Xue Lei's possession via his chamber.
Under Section 6 Act 94, possession of enemy weapons is illegal, and anyone caught doing so shall be dealt with in accordance with the Dai Dynasty law, regardless of his position, length of service and even amount of contributions he made under service to either Dai Imperial Courts or military or both. - past and present.
Upon the suggestions and recommendations by both Advisor Chen and Premier Hu, it is decided that of all officials still in service to the Majesty, Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan is the best person to conduct the trial – given his experience as province magistrate under the late Emperor Dai Ci before taking on his current role as Chief Advisor.
It is also decided that Li Teng Yuan shall be relieved of his current post temporarily so that he is able to focus fully on his new assignment as Imperial Magistrate until the trial ends with the case properly resolved."
The document's authenticity was confirmed by the Dai Imperial Seal stamp at the top and bottom of the message. The mere sight of the official seal had a profound impact on Teng Yuan, leaving him taken aback even before he had read the tablet's contents.
"How do you feel about your new appointment?" Premier Hu inquired with clear cunning glint in his eyes while still smiling.
"I…it's a bit sudden. But why wasn't I informed first before being appointed to my new post?" Teng Yuan responded, feeling a heavy weight on his shoulders and mind.
"Right now, I am informing you." The Chancellor affirmed. "Though it's sudden and unexpected for you, it needs to be handled urgently and immediately without any delay."
"I…don't really…understand." Suddenly, the chamber hall became a huge whirl of maze for him due to the Royal Imperial head's authoritative tone and the imposing guards all around him, mounting pressure on him physically and mentally.
"Though Xue Lei has contributed greatly to our Dai Dynasty as a commander and patriot, the fact that we discovered him to be in possession of enemy weapons spoke volumes about his true intentions." Premier Hu explained. "Upon discovery, Advisor Chen and I had to perform our duties by consulting with the Majesty first, and we all came to the conclusion that you are best suited for the task of interrogating him and restoring justice, law, and order to what we have built so far."
"I…don't really know what…to say…" For the first time in a very long time, he found himself at a complete loss for words. Simply this decree on a tablet that he was passed and read had stripped him of the position that he had been serving for decades and placed him at where he started off but had not performed for a long time.
"Your extensive experience as a magistrate for Old Capital City, Long Chun, and Jiang Zhou provinces has undoubtedly equipped you with the expertise and insight necessary to address this situation effectively. Even as Chancellor, I recognize the value of your knowledge and appreciate the potential you bring to your new role as Imperial Magistrate. All the more, we must not let the actions of an individual jeopardize the reputation and governance we have worked tirelessly to establish."
With a deep breath, Teng Yuan steadied himself and nodded in acceptance of his new role and task. "I understand the gravity of the situation and the trust that has been placed in me. I assure you that I will approach this case with a clear head and an unwavering commitment to justice, without allowing any personal feelings to cloud my judgement."
"Excellent! It's settled then." Premier Hu's facial expression and tone of voice conveyed his joy and confidence. "I have utmost faith in your ability to carry out a thorough investigation, given your proven track record of success in past cases. You have a reputation for being meticulous and relentless in pursuing the truth, and I have no doubt that you will leave no stone unturned in this case as well."
"However, because I do not have the full details yet, I will certainly investigate thoroughly before deciding whether Xue Lei is guilty or innocent," Teng Yuan decided to deflate some of the grand chancellor's ego by making his stand clear without sounding too offensive.
Upon hearing those words, the Grand Chancellor finally stopped smiling as he anticipated.
"Chief Advisor - or should I now address you Imperial Magistrate Li?"
Looking clearly disturbed, Premier Hu attempted to address him by his new appointment role. "May I remind you of tablet decree which I strongly urge you to read again? For the Majesty clearly indicates that you are to oversee and complete the trial proceedings properly and accordingly?
For this order does not just come from me nor Advisor Chen but from the Majesty himself. I'm sure as a wise and knowledgeable minister like yourself who has dedicated decades to studying and upholding the law, you certainly will not defy the official decree, won't you?"
"I'll stick to my usual approach and handle this case in the same manner as my previous ones," Li Teng Yuan replied with confidence.
"To facilitate a swifter and more efficient resolution to Xue Lei's case, I appointed Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yu to aid you in the investigation and decision-making process. Furthermore, upon successful conclusion of the case, I promised that you and your family will receive generous compensation and enjoy a much better quality of life."
Having said that, he laughed seeming having known the outcome even before informing Teng Yuan as though he had everything within his grasp and control from top to bottom. Call it pure confidence if you like.
Teng Yuan also joined him in laughter though his was more of resigning to his fate than being confident.
Compared to the magistrate's subordinate court jail, the palace dungeon was much larger and ominous.
Shrouded in dim illumination, with torches installed on the walls casting weak lighting that barely permeated the shadows on the floor, the general result was a spooky atmosphere, highlighting the gloom that enveloped the entire space.
Within the confines of the dungeon, the air was thick with the agonies of pain and misery as prisoners withstood the searing pain inflicted by laser whips especially in torture chambers. These whips, possessed by merciless guards, emitted intense heat, proving even more severe and deadlier than standard ones used in province dungeons and regional jail cells.
The grim noises echoed throughout the stone wall surfaces, working as a haunting backdrop to the suffering within.
The dungeon was categorized in three types as in: gangs, duo and individuals which was reserved for prominent figures charged and being stripped of their ranks. Allotment to which type depended on the seriousness of the crimes committed be it as group, pair or just lone individual, status and background.
Amid this overbearing environment, the commanders and guards had their own private quarters for conducting conferences, investigations, and taking care of the seized possessions from prisoners.
Overall, the imperial palace dungeon was strictly governed and heavily guarded area, where commanders wielded complete control over every aspect of the detainees' existence.
Jiang Xue Lei was kept in a large cell, yet the darkness and chill made him oppressive. The lack of temperature control attributed to his feelings of powerless and oppressive. The lack of temperature control contributed to his feeling of powerlessness, making it difficult for him to even relax.
While pondering over what crimes he committed that led to his imprisonment, the cell door suddenly turned open. In stepped Imperial Commanders Fu and Kuang. Upon seeing them, he recognized them as ones who escorted him to palace for homecoming banquet and whom his comrades Zhan Bao and Kang Jie crossed paths to save him.
"Xue Lei," Commander Kuang addressed him, his voice echoing through the cold dungeon. "You're wanted for questioning in Imperial Courts."
"Yes, commanders." Xue obeyed and rose to his feet before following them from his dark and isolated cell, the faint light dancing across the stone. With deliberate steps, he accompanied them, unsure of the trials that awaited him in the legal domain of Dai Imperial Courts.
In the gloomy corridor flanked by prison cells, they navigated through a cacophony of desperate cries. Fellow prisoners, once comrades who fought alongside him, called out his title and name General Xue Lei repeatedly, a reminder of the camaraderie they once shared on the battlefield and respect they still for him as their commander.
Their echoes, laden with the weight of captivity, resonated through the cold stone walls. He refrained from meeting their desperate gazes, a stoic acknowledgment of the stark reality that bound them all in the clutches of imprisonment.
They approached the far end of the corridor where an imposing cargo elevator awaited them. The metal doors parted open under the direction of a nod from Commander Fu. One of the patrol guards, following an unspoken signal, pressed the button to initiate the descent.
Stepping into the confined space, the small party braced themselves for the descent into the depths of the judicial labyrinth awaiting. The Down button, when pressed, signalled the beginning of underground journey to intricate layers of the Dai Dynasty's legal proceedings.
The cargo elevator descended into the depths, revealing an unexpected sight upon its doors reopening. The surroundings transformed into what appeared to be an antiquated underground monorail station where ahead of them, the train was on standby on the underground tracks.
It embarked on its subterranean journey with them as only passengers. Upon whisking through the winding tunnel, the enclosed space plunged them into an impenetrable darkness, the only illumination emanating from the lights within the carriage. The rhythmic clattering of the wheels against the tracks echoed through the confined space, creating an eerie ambiance.
After what felt like a considerable duration in transit, it stopped at another subterranean station. The subsequent opening of doors granted them entry.
As the trio approached the same cargo elevator, its doors parted open. Upon entering, Commander Fu deftly pressed the Up button. The sensation of moving upward replaced the subterranean descent, creating an air of uncertainty about what awaited them.
When the doors slid open again, they revealed a vastly different environment. Instead of the dark dungeon, they now stood in the well-lit corridors of Imperial Courts.
The transition from darkness to illumination marked the shift from the shadows of confinement to the more public and scrutinizing gaze of the legal proceedings that were about to commerce.
On either side, intricately carved chambers housed the legal minds of the Dai Dynasty. The walls were adorned with the tapestries. depicting the illustrious history of the dynasty, creating an ambiance that resonated with the weight of justice.
Upon being ushered by four more Imperial Dai guards emerging, the entourage eventually arrived at the main court chamber. Twin pillars adorned with ornate unicorn rider carvings flanked the entrance, serving as stoic sentinels to the hallowed space within. The chamber itself stood as a testament to another Dai architectural marvel, with high ceilings and elaborate detailing that added a sense of solemnity to the proceedings about to unfold.
Within the chamber, newly appointed Imperial Magistrate Li Teng Yuan, flanked by Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yi, stood before the central jury table and chairs. They formed the jury, ready to weigh the evidence and dispense justice. The arrangement reflected a structured hierarchy, with Teng Yuan as judge, overseeing the proceedings.
"Greetings, my lords." In a gesture of respect, he bowed before the jury, his escorting commanders doing likewise on his either side.
"General Xue Lei, please do not stand on ceremony." Despite the gravity of the situation, Teng Yuan showed a humble disposition as he addressed the renowned guest, urging him to dispense with formalities.
While still clad in his entirely blue robe but now wearing turban hat, he took charge. Staring with turning to jury stewards and ordering: "Please issue the Imperial Court decree."
The court chamber, despite the technological wonders of the time, adhered to the sacred traditions, ensuring that the rules and rituals remained consistent with past and present generations. d
With meticulous care, the jury steward placed both the official decree tablet and royal seal on jury table, commanding the attention of everyone present. In a single, reverent motion, they knelt and bowed their heads before those, their voices rising in unison to proclaim, "Long live the Majesty, and may justice prevail in these proceedings."
The ceremonial declaration resounded through the courtroom, underscoring the gravity and importance of the events about to take place.
As others in the courtroom rose, Xue remained on his knees, a stark symbol of his altered status from military commander to prisoner.
Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yi, clad in their red and green robes with matching turban hats, exchanged dismayed glances, evidently perturbed by his unconventional display. Despite their disapproval, Teng Yuan extended a gesture of compassion and understanding. With concern etched on his face, he addressed and urged the accused: "General Xue Lei, please get up."
Acknowledging the reality of his situation, he responded stoically, "Sorry, I'm no longer the general but a prisoner now. Being a prisoner, I do not have the right to stand up."
Undeterred by this proclamation, Teng Yuan persisted, emphasizing the importance of his current predicament, "General Xue Lei, you have been in the battlefield for years and recently on a long journey from enemy territory back to ours. It'll be better if you stand up and answer our questions accordingly."
In a quiet yet firm gesture of refusal, the former commander simply shook his head.
Concern for his well-being obviously prompted Teng Yuan to employ a different tactic by adding, "Also, being in imprisonment for some time, your health will be at risk if you remained on your knees. General Xue Lei, I'm imploring you, as jury judge, to please stand up."
The courtroom buzzed with a collective murmur as the implications of the judge's actions reverberated. Even the two aides shared a moment of shock at the unexpected turn. Teng Yuan, defying the anticipated boundaries, extended a helping hand to the prisoner, compelling him to rise.
Xue, looking up with a mix of shock, sadness, and gratitude, finally acceded with a heartfelt statement: "Thank you, my lord." before regaining his feet.
The next scenario settled into a tense atmosphere as the three appointed jury members took their designated seats. With Teng Yuan positioned at the center, the gravity of the situation hung palpably in the air.
Without wasting any more time, the newly appointed judge looked at his fellow members on either side and upon obtaining their nod approval, delved in the proceedings.

Without wasting any more time, the newly appointed judge looked at his fellow members on either side and upon obtaining their nod approval, delved in the proceedings.
"General Xue Lei!" Teng Yuan began, his voice carrying the weight of both authority and responsibility, "Though you have contributed tremendously in defending our kingdom, the fact that you are in possession of enemy weapons proves your guilt as with any criminal. Before we begin, I strongly advise you to speak nothing but the truth."
Facing the jurors, Xue acknowledged the judge's directive with a solemn affirmation. "I, Xue Lei, will speak nothing but the truth," he declared, setting the tone for the inquiry that would determine his fate. The echoes of his pledge lingered in the courtroom, marking the commencement of a trial that would scrutinize the actions of a once-revered military leader.
"General Xue Lei, firstly, how did the enemy weapons end up in your chamber of all places?" Teng Yuan asked.
"My lord, the truth is I have no idea. After the banquet, I retired to my bed chamber for an early rest. Suddenly, Advisor Chen and his men woke me up, alleging that I was in possession of those. I absolutely could not recall having them all this while."
Advisor Chen Xi interjected sharply, "Xue Lei, stop finding excuses for your crimes! If you didn't have those weapons, who gave them to you?"
Teng Yuan turned and reminded him of their roles, "As judge, I will be the one questioning Xue Lei, and he has the right to answer my questions. As for his guilt or innocence, we'll address that later."
Advisor Chen smiled, more out of guilt for his hastiness than his mistake.
Focusing on Xue, Teng Yuan continued, "So based on your statement, are you claiming that you can't recall how and where you obtained them at all? Are you also aware that as a Dai citizen and even military commander, possessing enemy weapons is strictly forbidden and carries a death penalty by law?"
"Yes, my lord. I'm fully aware. But as I said, I have no idea how they ended up in my bed chamber. I cannot recall how and where they ended up with me in the first place." He replied with a bewildered expression.
Advisor Chen Xi interrupted again by asking, "So are you blaming me and my men for framing you?"
Mo Ru Yi added, "Do you have evidence and witnesses that could prove your innocence? If not, under Act 6 Section 94 on illegal possession of enemy weapons, we have the power to pronounce you guilty as charged. The fact that you're even on trial was due to your past contributions as commander. Anyone else found guilty would be executed with or without a trial."
"My lord," Xue protested, knowing the odds were against him. "I really have no idea. Even if you executed me, my answer remains the same."
Mo Ru Yi pressed on, "Another charge we found you guilty of is collaborating with Dai rebels Kang Jie and Zhan Bao, who were supposed to be under your command but ended up attacking Commanders Fu and Kuang also here and killed several of our men. What do you have to say about them?"
"My men believed they were saving me from a trap." He explained briefly as he did not have sufficient evidence to believe that the whole arrangement was a set up even if his men claimed otherwise.
Advisor Chen accused him further, "Xue Lei, stop distorting the facts and blaming others! You're not taking responsibility for your actions!"
"I'm not blaming anybody. I am speaking the truth, as I promised. Perhaps it will be better for the Majesty to reinvestigate this case before pressing charges against me." Xue Lei suggested.
Upon hearing that, Chen Xi slammed down the decree tablet, adding, "How dare you deny everything, even the Emperor's decree! Are you implying that his Majesty and the whole Imperial Royal Circle have accused you wrongly?"
Teng Yuan intervened, addressing the jury members: "Let Xue Lei explain."
Casting his eyes back upon the former commander and now accused, he resumed, "General Xue Lei, please speak up and make your stand clearer."
Xue Lei ardently persisted in his defence, speaking from his heart and what he knew so far. "For years, we had been stationed at Chong An mountains as our base and fighting against the invading Shibeibu armies to defend our kingdom and most importantly, rescue our Majesty's older brother Dai Chong.
Unfortunately, in our last battle, we lost and most of our men perished despite fighting valiantly to the end. Only Zhan Bao, Kang Jie and I survived only to ended up in enemy captivity.
By right we should be tortured and executed but because their king was in great mood, he agreed to release us and even give us rations on our way back here. I was eventually summoned back in time to join the homecoming banquet but not my two men. They were ambushed and barely made it alive before trying to rescue me.
So, in regards, to your wild accusations, Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yi, they are simply false allegations as my loyalty has always been my priority to my country, people and family.
As for keeping enemy weapons in possession and for ulterior agenda, I Xue Lei will never do such a thing
Instead of arguing further, I'll show you my family insignia tattoo!"
Demonstrating his genuineness, he unveiled his tattooed back, showcasing the words For Country, For People, And For Family vertically in Dai characters. Although his fellow jury members remained doubtful, Teng Yuan seemed moved by Xue Lei's authenticity.
"General Xue Lei," He said with sadness in his tone. "You don't have to go to great lengths on this. I believe you."
Rising to his feet, the newly appointed imperial magistrate approached him and put his clothes back on his back before continuing, "The dungeon is extremely cold. You need additional clothing to keep yourself warm."
Turning to Commanders Fu and Kuang on his left and right side, he ordered them, "Guards, take General Xue back to the dungeon to recuperate. We will continue the trial on another day!"
"Yes, my lord." Both commanders complied though they still looked at Advisors Chen and Mo as if to signal what they should do next.
After ending the trial, Li Teng Yuan dispensed with his so-called aides but turned out to be more like Premier Hu's watchdogs Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yi before returning to his residence in hover carriage by his driver.
Upon entering the doorway with servant Ah Fu welcoming him back, he sat at the dining room hall main chair. Despite now being at home and should be relaxing, he found himself heavy in heart over what had happened moments ago.
At the same time, his wife Madam Li Qian An, son Li Neng Yuan and Sumeijian entered the hall as well and joined him in their respective seats over what should be a family meal and discussion table.
His other servant offered Teng Yuan a cup of hot tea, but he could not bring himself to drink as the weight of his responsibility was heavy on his heart.
"Old Master, it's good to see you back." His wife greeted him warmly before expressing concern "But at the same time, I can see you looking troubled."
"Is it because of General Xue Lei?" Neng Yuan asked with a concerned look.
"I've just been assigned a new position as Imperial Court Magistrate by the Majesty and Premier Hu who invited and informed me at his residence moments ago. After which, I was supposed to be interrogating General Xue."
"So how did it turn out?" His son asked again, obviously eager to know the outcome.
But he chose not to reply directly for a good reason. Instead, he responded by saying, "Besides just being commander, General Xue Lei has been our saviour and instrumental in several battles against our Shibeibu foes to defend our dynasty. We all know. In fact, everyone knows. If so, why must there be someone framing him for the crimes he did not commit? Why must patriots like him always end on the losing end?"
"Father, why don't we speak with the Majesty directly, asking him to reinvestigate and clear Xue Lei of any wrongdoings?" Neng Yuan suggested, looking just as concerned as him.
"It's no use!" Sumeijian suddenly chipped in her opinion casually. "Because the person wanting him dead is the Majesty himself."
At this moment, Teng Yuan, angered by her statement, stood up and turned to her with a glare, questioning her motives: "What nonsense are you sprouting?"
"I'm not sprouting any nonsense!" Sumeijian argued back in defence. "If General Xue Lei rescued the former Majesty, who will sit on the throne as current Emperor?"
"How dare you speak ill of the Majesty and General Xue Lei!" Teng Yuan almost shouted at her over what he perceived as dissent and unwomanly behavior based upon her words. "You do not belong to our family and this place! Who gave you the right to pass judgment?"
His only consolation from that moment was that Sumeijian was not his daughter because if she was, his reprimand would be even more severe.
As Madam Li Qian An was not feeling tired, she decided to personally deliver the nightly herbal soup supper to her husband in his study chamber instead of delegating the task to Ah Ying.
While she had been married to him for years and had regular interactions with him, most of their time together was spent in the master bedroom and living hall. It was during the earlier moment that she observed his temperament, especially towards Sumeijian, due to their different opinions However, his study chamber, where he devoted most of his time to work or discussions with their son, remained a space she seldom entered.
As his wife, she understood the importance of providing her husband with the necessary privacy and space to plan and attend to his duties as a minister and house master. However, on this night, a sense of curiosity and concern prompted her to take a closer look at what he had been occupied with in his study chamber.
Upon entering the study room, she noticed her spouse fully absorbed in his tasks. As usual, he sat in the leather chair before his desk, diligently typing on the keyboard, his gaze fixed on the bright in-built screen. A tablet acted as a means of storing data, was connected to the setup to for information transfer.
Putting his herbal soup in wooden bowl with cover on the other guest table before the cushion chairs where he would get their son or invite special guests to be seated, she turned to him saying.
"Old Master, it is getting late now. Please drink your soup before it gets cold."
Approaching him and looking from his back, she glanced at the monitor screen that he was focusing on while typing. It read:
To His Majesty Emperor Dai Zhong,
After a thorough investigation and questioning General Xue Lei, I found no evidence that proves him guilty of possessing our enemy weapons in his bed chamber nor in collaboration with Shibeibu enemies as Dai rebel that he has been labelled upon as additional charge.
I suspected that he could be set up by someone who wants to harm him.
Given the fact of his contributions as commander in fighting and defending our Dai Dynasty, I asked the Majesty to pardon him or at least give me more time to investigate as who the real culprits are to clear his name and restore justice to our Dai Dynasty.
From Imperial Court Magistrate
Li Teng Yuan
"Old Master, is this… letter of pardon and appeal?" She inquired, her worry mirroring the complexity of the situation her husband found himself entangled in.
Teng Yuan, with a sombre nod, confirmed her suspicions. "First thing tomorrow morning, I will head to the palace and appeal with the Majesty to pardon General Xue Lei or, at the very least, give me more time to investigate and get to the bottom of this. Throughout my years of knowing him as a commander and a person, I do not believe that he betrays our nation."
Madam Li, while supportive of her husband, could not help but express her frustration with the handling of the case.
"The Majesty should have investigated this case thoroughly before imprisoning him." She remarked, voicing her opinion even though she lacked insight into the political tensions brewing within the palace.
The dynamics of justice, loyalty, and political intricacies within the Dai Dynasty were becoming increasingly complex, and the couple found themselves at the centre of a tumultuous storm.
"Reflecting back, maybe I should not have blown my temper at Sumeijian." He said while his eyes and fingers still focused on the screen and keyboard. " "Because as I am thinking right now, she could have a point."
She chimed in with a joyful recount. "Sumeijian is still a young girl and tends to say whatever comes into her mind. Do not take it to heart."
Upon saying that, she felt blessed to have another woman in their family since she could not give birth to another child.
Teng Yuan, apparently now sharing his suspicions, continued, "Though we do not have concrete evidence, I suspect that the culprits harming Xue Lei are not just Premier Hu and his Imperial Royal Circle lackeys but someone else controlling the proceedings. Though I still do not believe her statement that the Emperor wants Xue Lei dead, I believe that there is someone else helping Premier Hu and his lackeys."
Concerned for her husband's well-being, she urged him to take a break. "Old Master, I think you're getting tired and stressed. Please take the soup first before continuing with the letter." she suggested, expressing care as his wife.
"Let me transfer this into the tablet first." Li Teng Yuan decided to focus on his immediate priority first before taking his supper break.
This was so that when he woke up the next morning, he would have everything prepared beforehand. Once that was done and he was having his supper from drinking the herbal soup, he instructed his wife: "Madam, can you bring me the Death Immunity Grant issued by the late Majesty Emperor Dai Ci?"
Anticipating the gravity of the situation, as expected by Teng Yuan, his wife, Qian An, wore a pale expression as she inquired, "Why do you need it for?"
The Death Immunity Grant was the relic seal that spared the family from death sentence and any capital punishment. This was also his reward for having served three decades in Dai government as magistrate, advisor deputy, chief advisor and now in his new temporary appointment. But it was more than just as the name implied. It was also to protect him and his family members from any sentence that could jeopardize them should whoever took over as the new Majesty, Emperor, any official or commander in Imperial Royal Circle turned corrupt.
"Madam, you may not fully understand even if I tell you," He decided to explain in detail given the gravity of what he was about to face and she as his wife and lifetime partner. "Since the previous Majesty's passing, the Imperial Royal Circle has been under control of Premier Hu and clouded in treachery, including his manipulation of most officials and even the Majesty.
Regarding this morning's meeting with him, if it is just for my sake, I would have listened to his advice and sentenced Xue Lei to death without blinking an eyelid.
But as I said earlier, Xue Lei has always been loyal and patriotic to our national cause. If I just sentenced him without proper investigation, I will be doing a disservice to our people who mostly love him and even jeopardize our family reputation."
At this juncture, his wife nodded in understanding, fully aware of the risks involved. She proceeded to one bookshelf behind his desk, below which she knew the passcode of safe housing the Death Immunity Grant in memory.
Kneeling to enter the passcode, she opened the safe, revealing the official blue and white seal designed in the shape of a unicorn's head. Passing it to her husband, she acknowledged the weight of the situation.
"By seeking a pardon for General Xue Lei and asking for more time to investigate, I will be directly opposing the orders Premier Hu has orchestrated and successfully persuaded the Majesty to endorse." Teng Yuan explained as he placed the Death Immunity Grant beside the tablet, having completed the necessary data transfer. "Even if I am doing the right thing, there is a considerable risk that Premier Hu may not take it lightly and even resort to silence me on my return, given his considerable influence over everyone."
"So, if anything happens to me, I want you to take our son Neng Yuan back to our old hometown immediately. I also want Neng Yuan to step down from his new post and never to step back into politics again."
"Old Master, you're again thinking too much." His wife again tried to persuade him to see otherwise which was understandable since she was not a member of Imperial Royal Circle nor being involved in politics but with just basic understanding of what was happening around them. "You have been of service to our late Majesty, and I'm sure based on that, our current one will definitely look into this matter and give you and even Xue Lei the justice our system deserves."
"I hope you're right, Madam." Teng Yuan said even as he knew the odds were stacked greatly against him. "I really hope you are."
"Who gave the servant Ah Nan permission to enter the Highness chamber and inform her of General Xue Lei's arrest in the first place?" Dai Zhong demanded to know after being back in his study chamber.
Premier Hu quickly responded to reassure him, "Your Majesty, I suppose he was still alarmed by what happened to his master and needed someone else to relate to in a moment of panic. But don't worry, I'll see to that matter soon."
Dai Zhong was worried about the confidentiality surrounding the arrest, so he reiterated his stance, saying, "The fewer people knowing the real reason for his arrest, the better it is for us."
He then pondered over what happened moments earlier and expressed disappointment, "I should have sent more men to guard her chamber. Speaking of my own sister, I thought by sending her to be trained in Dai Academy, she will grow and become a better person. But based on my fencing practice and conversation with her a while ago, I am wrong."
He continued, sharing his frustration, "For the Highness still hasn't changed at all and disappointed me greatly. First, she allows herself to be distracted in a duel I expect her to win. Then all sudden, she gets emotional about the past and keeps asking me about Xue Lei. This is not the first and certainly not the last she mentioned him, our older brother and even our late parents. To be honest, I am now getting fed up but still give in considering that she is a woman, Highness, and my own sister."
"Your Majesty, may I be upfront with you by what I'm about to say?" The Grand Chancellor requested consent to convey his opinion. "The Highness is still single and has been lonely. Besides just fencing, drawing, singing, playing music and composing poetry, what else can she do? Given her age, it is time to find a husband for her and as the new Crown Prince."
Dai Zhong inquired, "Do you mean arranging a marriage for her? But as you and I know, the Highness has always been headstrong and independent from a young age. She may be emotional about the past but when it comes to matters such as this, especially marriage as a lifetime commitment, she will not agree easily."
"Finding men for her is not easy. But finding one that complements her and us certainly is," Premier Hu reassured him. "Once she has someone in mind, she will certainly spend more time with him and naturally forget about what you just said about her."
"If that is the case, I shall leave this matter to you," Dai Zhong entrusted him before moving on to another pressing issue. "Has Xue Lei's case been looked into?"
"Your Majesty, as you instructed through official decree, I have already entrusted it to Li Teng Yuan, whom I also placed in his new position as Imperial Magistrate."
"Problem is Li Teng Yuan has always been precise and impartial in the way he handles matters from my father's time as ruler till now. Just by convincing him to sentence and execute Xue Lei will not be easy. If he knows the truth, he will certainly come to me and request Xue Lei to be pardoned or given a lighter sentence."
"Your Majesty, you can leave this to me. When that time comes, I will let you know what to say and what not to say to make sure that he has no choice but to comply while you remain in your stand as Emperor."
Upon hearing this, Dai Zhong nodded in approval before concluding the day to concentrate on the upcoming Imperial Court meeting the next morning.
At dawn break, Commander Fu, accompanied by his three men, forcefully entered the Palace Servants' Quarters, demanding to speak to Ah Nan, who had served under General Xue Lei.
The servant was led into one of the palace gardens under duress. Forced to get down on knees, he met his gruesome fate.
Commander Fu, without hesitation or warning, pulled out his blaster and fired three shots into the servant's forehead, killing him instantly. At his orders, his body was to be carried away in black body dumping bag and buried in the nearby Qing Tao Hills by his men.
With him gone, there would be no one left to advocate for Xue Lei. Confidently believing he had eliminated any potential witnesses who could have testified on Xue Lei's behalf, he believed the last one to be Imperial Magistrate Li Teng Yuan, who would be dealt with by his immediate superior and the Majesty separately.
In the age-old traditions of the Dai Dynasty despite its advanced technology, it was customary for young adults to don the military imperial outfit and send their parents off on their official duties.
This ritual had been ingrained in the culture for generations, serving as a symbol of familial support and reverence, particularly when one or both parents held positions in the military or government, often serving within the palace.
The practice laid strong foundations in the principles of deference and esteem, both for the parental position of family upbringing and the obligations associated with public service. It went beyond a mere custom and served as a meaningful expression of the children's recognition and admiration for their parents' dual roles - as both family caretakers and committed servants for the government.
As the morning sun cast a warm golden light, Li Neng Yuan wore the same attire he had worn upon his return from Dai Academy.
His immaculate white imperial garb featured the Dai Dynasty's emblem, a blue unicorn, prominently displayed on the right side of his chest. He complemented his outfit with matching pants, standard blue cloak, and sturdy boots.
He was now standing upon the second-story balcony surrounded by natural surroundings of encompassing trees and comprising of outdoor landing pad where his father's hovercraft awaited departure.
Flanked by two servants, including Ah Fu who had warmly welcomed him on his return, he was there to personally send off his father. It was a gesture to compensate for his absence during his father's previous departure, when he had been with Royal Highness at same time.
Usually at this time, he and his family would be having breakfast as a get-together and open discussion session. However, due to the urgency of his father's mission, he opted to forgo the customary gathering. Though breakfast had been prepared for him, a daily habit strongly advocated by his mother as first meal of the day made compulsory before doing anything else, he decided to have it later and send his father off first.
Just as his father was about to board the craft with two guards, he turned and looked at him directly in his eyes, saying, "Son, the journey I'm about to embark on is not like any other. It is perilous and carries a significant amount of courage and risk on my end given my position. If anything happens to me on the way, you and your mother are to leave immediately and return to our old hometown."
"Father, please don't say that. You have been a highly respected servant and official for the Dynasty. If only I can accompany you…"
"No!" His father turned him flatly and firmly. "This is a serious matter that only I can manage. Here, your mother and whole family needs you more. Please take care of them while I am away."
Having said that, he turned and boarded the hovercraft with one guard sitting with him in the back and the other in the front driver's seat piloting the hover carriage.
Good luck, father. Neng Yuan wished him well in his thoughts as he watched the blue bubble glass descending upon them in their seats and the hover carriage taking off with blue flares trailing from its rear engines.
In stark contrast to the Dai Imperial Courts, an integral part of the palace, the Majesty Imperial Court Chambers stood as a distinct edifice.
While its ground floor was dedicated to hosting meetings with officials and commanders of the Imperial Royal Circle, the rest of the storeys housed administrative offices and spaces for policymaking.
Seemingly positioned behind Dai Garden Hall, the venue for the grand homecoming banquet, as well as the imposing Fencing Hall and Pyramid Temple
Shrine from far view, the Majesty Imperial Court Chambers was situated on the other side with the artificial Dai Palace Lake in between. Spanning this expanse was a 20km arch-bridge, providing a majestic pathway to the chambers.
Surrounded by the commanding presence of two pagodas flanking it on either side, the building held a unique position between these structures. Unlike the Shrine, which served specific ceremonial purposes, the pagodas were exclusively reserved for the Majesty and the Royal Highness as imperial siblings, adding to the overall grandeur of the architectural ensemble.
As the hovercraft approached its destination, the arch-bridge seamlessly adjusted itself, transforming into a landing pad to facilitate a smooth descent. Guided by the communication links embedded within the transport's control panel, the vehicle smoothly navigated to its designated parking area. This section primarily catered to officials and commanders attending sessions and hearings with the Majesty.
The parking area, concealed beneath the surface, revealed itself as an underground tunnel. Despite its subterranean location, it boasted an impressive interior, featuring neatly arranged rows of hover carriages and hoverbikes. The fortified entrance, guarded by two Dai-armoured troops, emphasized the security measures in place.
Upon coming to a halt, the bubble glass once again elevated, revealing Li Teng Yuan and his accompanying guards. They proceeded towards the bubble lift, an elevated transport system that would convey them to the esteemed Majesty's Imperial Chambers.
The Majesty's Imperial Chambers stood as an impressive architectural marvel, occupying the expanse of interconnected ground floor rooms. At its center, a grand throne adorned a raised platform, providing an elevated vantage point from which Emperor Dai Zhong presided. Flanked by two eunuchs and three handmaidens on either side, the throne room exuded an air of authority and formality.
As this occasion marked a formal hearing and discussion session, Emperor Dai Zhong was attired in his customary regalia - a blue turban hat, complemented by the same white robes and blue tunic he wore during the preceding homecoming banquet. The commanding presence of the throne set the stage for the proceedings.
Upon the entrance of all the commanders and officials, a collective display of respect ensued, with each individual kneeling and bowing before the Emperor, chanting, "Long live the Majesty!"
"You may rise and dispense with the formalities." Dai Zhong responded. "As usual, those who have issues, please raise them up immediately. For those who don't, you are free to leave now."
The atmosphere in the grand chamber brimmed with anticipation as the audience awaited the unfolding discussions and decisions.
At this juncture, Imperial Magistrate Li Teng Yuan entered. Donning a blue turban hat and blue robes, he approached the Majesty, knelt and bowed before introducing himself, "I am Li Teng Yuan, appointed by the Majesty as Chief Advisor and Imperial Court Magistrate, and I humbly request an audience with Your Majesty."
"You may rise, Li Teng Yuan." Dai Zhong's voice echoed through the hall, his tone informal yet commanding as he gestured for him to approach. "What brings you here today?"
Teng Yuan obliged by getting to his feet before getting to the point.
"Your Majesty, I have come to discuss the matter of General Xue Lei, whose case I was assigned to investigate as an Imperial Court Magistrate."
After examining what appeared to be a portable tablet device, he went on to say, "My investigations and scrutiny of General Xue Lei personally failed to uncover any evidence showing him in possession of weapons belonging to the Shibeibu enemy.
Based on my understanding, General Xue Lei has been a loyal commander and our devoted saviour who loves our country and has been engaged in defending us against our Shibeibu adversaries for years.
Hence, I have reason to believe that someone has been framing him and I kindly ask your Highness to grant him clemency while I need more time to continue my inquiry and uncover the truth behind this matter.
I'll do whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it means putting my own life at risk."
Upon hearing this, Dai Zhong looked to Grand Chancellor below on his right on how he should respond. The latter shook his head which he instantly anticipated to be the rejection of his plea.
"Li Teng Yuan!" He turned to him and barked, his voice dripping with disdain. "Are you implying that I am in the wrong regarding Xue Lei's trial? You just said you are willing to put even your life to get to the bottom of this. May I ask, how much blood are you willing to shed in exchange for his life?"
At this point, Premier Hu stepped forth with a humble demeanour, his head lowered in respect, and stated, "Your Majesty, it seems that the Imperial Magistrate may not be fully aware of Xue Lei's case given that he is still adopting to his new post after having served as Chief Advisor for so long.
By right, anyone defying the direct order and official decree of the Majesty must be put to death immediately. But because Li Teng Yuan has served the court for years starting with your father as ruler, may I request the Majesty to pardon him and demand that he continues with his investigation in his new post?"
"Very well then, Grand Chancellor." Dai Zhong obliged. Turning to Teng Yuan, he demanded with his earlier order. "Li Teng Yuan, I give you exactly one week to close Xue Lei's case without further delay!"
In a flash, he hurled the blue Dai seal, which shattered into two pieces as it struck the ground in front of the newly appointed Imperial Magistrate.
"Court adjourned!" He concluded the session before leaving with his eunuchs and handmaidens through back wall of his throne. Even as they departed, his officials and commanders remained in the main hall, discussing and debating whether the decision was right, and Li Teng Yuan did the right thing.
For the first in a long time, tears welled in Li Teng Yuan's eyes.
Despite being presented with the unwanted truth, he remained resolute, refusing to succumb to defeat. For it was not in his character and will.
As the blue seal shattered into two halves before him, he felt as though a malevolent serpent had penetrated his body, coiling itself around his organs and lungs before sinking its venomous fangs into his heart. Yet, amidst this intrusive agony, his mind remained an unwavering bastion of clarity, impervious to the venomous assault.
Even more so by Premier Hu's words as he prepared to leave with his officials and commanders of Royal Imperial Circle.
"Imperial Magistrate Li, here is a saying that goes: If you know what is good for you, do it for you and your family. Especially in your new assigned post."
He laughed as he departed, leaving Teng Yuan devastated and struggling to comprehend what had just happened. For the clear and direct order from the Majesty, whom he had faithfully served and trusted, left him still in a state of profound shock.
Premier Hu, a title not bestowed without reason, bore the birth name Hu Qin Xiang.
However, he was predominantly addressed as Premier Hu, a moniker that inspired a mix of respect and fear among his former adversaries. Beyond his role as the Grand Chancellor and an official, he held a pivotal position as the head of the Imperial Royal Circle, wielding significant influence for a multitude of reasons.
Born in the province of Mu Fen, he underwent the rigorous training at Dai Academy. Unfortunately, due to health issues, he was relegated to the role of a scholar instead of fulfilling the mandatory military service.
Undeterred, he excelled in his scholarly pursuits, becoming an activist by the age of twenty, originally opposing the invasion of Dai Dynasty by the encroaching Shibeibu Empire.
But things changed during the invasion of First Capital City when he managed to escape alongside the then Prince Dai Zhong and his sister Princess Dai Yu. However, their respite was short-lived as they were soon intercepted by the Shibeibu commander, General Tetsuban and his army. However, his shrewd negotiation skills - without any fighting - turned the tide in their favor.
Recognizing that the territories conquered by the Shibeibu Empire were far less prosperous than their Dai counterparts, he struck a deal with the Shibeibu ruler, King Monarch Zengis.
The deal, focused on making the king's daughters happy, spared the lives of Premier Hu, his family, and the royal siblings he was entrusted to protect. The arrangement also earned Tetsuban's respect, even in his role as a Dai captive.
For a period, he served as an emergency advisor and ruler alongside the young Dai Zhong. As the prince matured as adult and was officially elected as official ruler, he willingly stepped aside, provided that his proposals aligned with the Majesty's vision and decisions.
Throughout his career of political manoeuvring and power play, he adhered to the principle that when a war is not his to win, he should align with the side that is going to win. This philosophy guided his actions, particularly in leveraging negotiation skills to compensate for what he lacked in combat skills.
However, a recent development greatly angered him, as he felt that someone, he thought he could easily control had taken power away from him. He felt frustrated because he believed that Li Teng Yuan had betrayed him by making promises that ended up being false. Also, when it came to art of deception, Premier Hu stood head and shoulders over most, including the Majesty.
"This Li Teng Yuan do not know what is good for him!" He expressed his resentment upon heading back to his residence and now in open terrace balcony overlooking the vibrant trees, the hangar bay, and the arch-bridge with his two trusted aides Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yi.
"He is clearly going against your orders." Advisor Chen acknowledged that Li Teng Yuan was evidently defying Premier Hu's instructions.
"What he just told the Majesty and everyone else in that hall is all true, with intent to pardon and release Xue Lei." Premier Hu shared his conclusion based on what he and his aides had heard moments ago.
"That's right." Mo Ru Yi added. "While we kept trying to interrogate Xue Lei, he kept putting us down and allowing Xue Lei to speak up."
Premier Hu expressed his annoyance once again before saying, "You inform him based upon my instructions, he is to continue interrogating Xue Lei and pass the death sentence as quickly as possible."
Advisor Chen again expressed his concern. "My lord, Li Teng Yuan is just like a tortoise with a tough shell in the tank. Stubborn and stinky. I'm afraid we can't convince him."
"The whole Imperial Royal Circle and Senate is now under my control." The Grand Chancellor proclaimed. "Li Teng Yuan is just a chief advisor and magistrate by posts from past and present Majesties but a small fly to me. Surely, he can't disobey my orders?"
"My lord, despite knowing that the Majesty does not like to discuss Xue Lei's case openly in public," Mo Ru Yi said. "he keeps mentioning it, hoping that the Majesty will eventually pardon and release Xue Lei. Think about it. If he doesn't even listen to the Majesty, he will surely disobey my lord even more."
This realization fuelled Premier Hu's indignation, prompting him to slam his hand down on the balcony railing. The political chessboard seemed to be presenting unexpected challenges, and Premier Hu was determined to maintain control.
"If he doesn't listen, just remove him from his post. For he is not the only official in Imperial Royal Circle." A new female voice just entered the atmosphere.
Looking up, Premier Hu saw his wife Madam Tang entering the balcony terrace and greeted her with a smile. "Madam."
Madam Tang, with her hair in a curled updo and dressed in a dark blue and yellow tunic layered over red garments, appeared as stunning as always.
However, her character and manner of speaking did not match her outward beauty. Additionally, the fortune teller - they sought advice from before marrying - predicted that those born in the year of the Red Celestial Serpent were skilled, meticulous and determined in their pursuits. While this might not hold true for everyone, it certainly did for her.
"For there're many officials and commanders in both Imperial Royal Circle and Senate under your command," His wife continued upon making her entry and now approaching and facing him eye-to-eye.
"Madam, you may not understand the whole situation," Premier Hu, recognizing the need to clarify his perspective, clarified his stand. "Though Li Teng Yuan had been stubborn in character, his achievements as province magistrate and chief advisor spoke volumes. For it was due to his resourcefulness that he had closed many cases and won over the hearts of many when it came to restoring justice."
"Really?" Madam Tang questioned with her unwavering eyes before inquiring further. "So, you intend to exploit that old fellow's credibility to deal with Xue Lei's case?"
"Precisely!" Premier Hu affirmed his true intentions. "Think about it. Xue Lei had been a great hero and patriot to most people. Except those under me. But we do not have the credibility to prove his guilt. However, if we used Li Teng Yuan to do so, we'll have one less obstacle in achieving our objectives. But if he refuses… "
"Then he'll taste my wrath!" His spouse finished his sentence. Seizing a teacup from the table on the balcony, she promptly crushed it into fragments with the golden talon-like claws on her fingers, then flung them off the balcony.
Premier Hu laughed over having one trump card in what was supposed to be the losing end for him having been outsmarted by his new opponent despite managing to convince the Majesty. While many knew and feared him as ally and foe, not many knew and were even familiar with his wife who used to operate in Dai military police as commander and still had significant influence over law enforcement even after marrying him.
Turning to his Advisors Chen Xi and Mo Ru Yi with renewed confidence, he instructed, "I want you to send men to watch over Li Residence. If there're any signs of them collaborating with Xue Lei's allies, please report to me immediately!"
"That won't be necessary." His spouse cautioned him against. Then with a swift and precise motion, she hurled a small metallic dark blue and red disk into the air. While spinning, it transformed into a mechanical bird with a yellow beak. and sinister red eyes, soaring out of the balcony and flying into the skies. "Leave this to my Night Hawk. It will monitor and report everything."
Premier Hu once again displayed his joy through laughter. For this was exactly the reason he had fallen in love with and married her. Though he lacked combat fitness, abilities and had to rely on his intelligence in manipulation and negotiation, his wife more than compensated in those.
