Chapter 245 - Chapter 245 – The Howl and the Flame

The forest burned with motion. Trees cracked under the weight of the battle. Smoke and dust spiraled upward, and the air trembled with every step of the monster.

Ravarak — the Iron Howl of the Vale — roared, its voice shaking the clearing like thunder from the earth's heart. Its iron-gray plates glowed a fierce crimson from friction heat, steam hissing from its vents. Each breath it took was like a furnace exhaling.

Willa staggered to her feet beside Seren, her body aching and bloodied. Her cracked shield hung heavy in her hand. Kael stood behind them, light bowgun raised, already reloading with precise movements. His face was set, calm but grim.

Seren adjusted his stance, lowering his lance. "He's not stopping," he said. "We end this now."

Willa wiped the blood from her lips. Her vision blurred, but her breathing steadied — Hunnt's voice echoing in her mind: Balance your breath. Feel the rhythm, not the fear.

"Then we end it," she said, voice low but steady.

Ravarak slammed its forearms down, sending shockwaves rippling through the earth — Echo Slam. Dirt and debris erupted into the air. Seren braced his lance, blocking the first wave, while Willa ducked behind her. Kael leapt back, rolling behind a fallen log and fired, each shot finding the seams of the monster's armor.

"Willa! Cover its flank!" Seren shouted.

Willa gripped her sword tighter. She inhaled, slow and deep — Balance Breath — feeling her pulse align with the rhythm of the fight. Then she charged.

Her movements flowed like water.

Overhead Slash — Side Slash — Thrust!

Each strike landed in sequence, fluid and sharp. Sparks flew from Ravarak's armor. The blade hummed in her hand, and her breathing carried her through each motion.

Ravarak turned its head toward her, eyes burning, and swung its tail. Willa saw the motion coming — her body reacted before her mind did.

Backstep!

She leapt backward, dirt scattering beneath her boots. The tail missed by inches.

"Now!" Kael's voice rang out.

He fired a round that exploded on impact, a concussive blast hitting Ravarak's side. The monster roared and stumbled. Willa didn't waste the opening.

She rushed forward, Guard Slash! Her shield collided with its leg — a perfect parry and strike in one. The clang echoed through the forest. Her shield vibrated, her arm numb, but she pressed on. She could feel the pulse of her breath — steady, anchored.

Her training took over completely.

Combo: Overhead Slash → Right Slash → Thrust → Shield Bash.

Each movement flowed into the next, seamless and alive. The edge of her sword cut between Ravarak's armor plates, sparks and steam bursting with every impact. She wasn't fighting by thought anymore — she was fighting by instinct, by rhythm.

Seren stepped in beside her, his lance glowing faintly as he blocked another of the monster's swings. The two fought side by side, moving as one. Seren struck high, Willa struck low — her shield catching glancing blows that would have crushed her if she hesitated.

Ravarak staggered, its breathing heavy, its glow deepening to a furious red. It reared up, slamming its arms down again. Seren was forced to leap back, the ground cracking beneath him. Kael fired a volley — three shots in rapid succession — striking the exposed joints at its neck.

The monster bellowed, its Iron Howl splitting the air. The sound rippled through the forest, shaking leaves from the trees. Willa clutched her head, teeth clenched against the pain. Her knees buckled, but she forced herself upright.

"Keep your breath steady!" Seren yelled.

Willa gasped once, twice — then steadied her rhythm again.

Inhale. Exhale. Focus.

Her breathing aligned with the heartbeat of the fight once more.

The Ravarak lunged. Seren blocked the charge head-on, his boots digging into the dirt, his shield screeching against the monster's claws. "Now, Willa!" he shouted, voice straining.

She saw her chance — the smallest gap beneath the beast's plated neck.

Perfect Rush Combo.

She moved. Her blade blurred in a flurry of precise strikes — Thrust, Slash, Spin, Shield Bash, Rising Cut.

Each hit faster than the last, each guided by breath and timing.

She inhaled between movements, exhaled with every strike. Sparks flew with each connection. Her sword carved deep into the monster's flesh at last, red spraying across the ground. Her rhythm became music — her heartbeat a drum.

Kael fired again, targeting the wound. The shot exploded inside it, the sound echoing like thunder.

Ravarak roared in agony, stumbling back. Its plates shifted, losing cohesion as steam vented violently from its body. It was faltering — wounded, desperate, enraged.

Willa stepped back, panting, her body trembling. Her shield was nearly shattered, her arm slick with blood. But she wasn't afraid anymore.

"Seren," she said between breaths, "we end this together."

Seren nodded. "On my signal."

Ravarak charged again, faster this time, body glowing crimson. The ground split beneath its claws.

Seren braced. "Now!"

He thrust his lance forward, impaling the creature's shoulder and locking it in place. Ravarak thrashed, bellowing in pain. Kael aimed his light bowgun, the barrel glowing faintly as he loaded an explosive round.

"Clear the shot!" Kael shouted.

Willa understood instantly. She sprinted forward, sliding beneath the monster's head. Her body moved on instinct, every motion fluid, driven by breath and resolve.

She spun once — Guarding Flow! Her sword caught the beast's descending claw, redirecting it aside. The motion opened the monster's chest for one, final strike.

"Now!" Seren roared.

Kael fired.

The shot hit true — the round detonated deep in Ravarak's exposed wound. Fire and light burst outward, tearing through its chest in a plume of smoke and molten sparks. The monster let out a final, echoing howl — one last Iron Howl that shook the entire forest — before collapsing to the earth.

The ground trembled under its fall. Dust and leaves lifted into the air. The roar faded into silence.

For a long moment, no one moved.

Only the sound of their breathing filled the clearing — heavy, ragged, alive.

Willa dropped to one knee, her sword sinking into the dirt beside her. Her arms shook, her body trembling from exhaustion and pain. Blood stained her armor, but her eyes — her eyes burned bright with determination.

Seren lowered his lance, glancing at her. "You did well," he said softly.

Kael exhaled, holstering his weapon. "More than well. That… was something else."

Willa looked up, smiling faintly through her exhaustion. "We did it."

Seren smiled, resting a hand on her shoulder. "You fought like a true hunter, Willa. You protected the village — just like those wanderers I told you about."

The words hit her heart like sunlight through clouds. She let out a shaky laugh, tears of relief mixing with dirt on her face.

As the three stood among the wreckage, the forest began to fall quiet again. Birds slowly returned to the trees. The Iron Howl was silent at last.

In the distance, the wind carried the faint sound of the village bell — a signal of peace restored.

Kael looked down at the fallen Ravarak and murmured, "A legend ended today."

Willa looked past the beast toward the horizon, where the last light of day broke through the clouds. Her breathing was steady, calm, alive.

"Not ended," she whispered. "Protected."
