In This AU: Still the girl-next-door, but heavier with grief. Broke up with Matt after her parents' death. Haunted by her past with Ayaan, who was once her first love and confidant. She is more fragile, more conflicted than canon Elena at this stage. Doesn't have any curiosity towards the new student: Stephan.
Canon Contrast: Canon Elena begins the show grieving but open to Stefan's romance. AU Elena is torn by layered grief — for her parents and Ayaan — making her emotional arc darker and slower.

Canon Contrast: Canon Bonnie discovers her magic slowly in S1. AU Bonnie is way ahead — curious, suspicious, less trusting — with Ayaan fueling her awakening by a new breathing technique to increase her control on magic.

Canon Contrast: Canon Caroline is insecure but craves attention. AU Caroline is colder toward Ayaan, avoiding him to preserve her image. Borderline villainous as Ayaan is a constant object of public's mockery. She especially doesn't like that her mother tries to fix thing between her and Ayaan.

In This AU: Still in love with Elena, but bitter. Sees Ayaan as an obstacle even in his ruined state. Angrier, more desperate. Ready to discredit Ayaan always, never lets a chance to be seen as better than Ayaan.
Canon Contrast: Canon Matt is supportive, safe, Elena's "normal." AU Matt is resentful, jealous, and sidelined, however equally "normal" for the crew. Even hates his sister for sleeping with Ayaan.

In This AU: Still arrogant and hotheaded. Once Ayaan's partner and support both in council and the school, after his fall Tyler has risen higher in the team, feeding his ego. Looks down upon Tyler, but cause of his parent's influence doesn't have outright conflict with Ayaan.
Canon Contrast: Canon Tyler is already the aggressive jock. AU Tyler's rise comes directly at Ayaan's expense, making their rivalry sharper.

Canon Contrast: Canon Vicki is lost in drugs and toxic relationships. AU Vicki is entangled with Ayaan, giving her more weight in the story.

Canon Contrast: Canon Alaric enters mid-S1. AU Alaric is already tied in, has visited Mystic Falls. A B-rank member of the Continental.

In This AU: Already a vampire, almost half a decade earlier than canon. Her bond with Ayaan keeps her loosely tied to Mystic Falls. Her regret is less about Elena, more about the promise her adopted son had taken from her: "To kill him, if he is lost".
Canon Contrast: Canon Isobel resurfaces later to reveal truths. AU Isobel is deeply linked from the beginning, however, she only observes Ayaan.
