I could sense Arnold's deliberate attempts to provoke me the moment I walked through the front door.

He stretched his arms with theatrical casualness, making sure his words hit their target. "I slept wonderfully last night. There's something so peaceful about sleeping beside Pauline."

My teeth clenched. He had shared a bed with Pauline? With my Pauline?

She wasn't technically mine, I reminded myself. But every fiber of my being belonged to her. She had woven herself into my soul so completely that I questioned whether I could exist without her presence.

What made it worse was that Pauline didn't contradict his statement, which only intensified the fire coursing through my veins.

After retreating to the bathroom for a while to steady myself from a wave of dizziness, I discovered Echo playing on the swing I had built for her. A genuine smile almost crossed my face until I noticed Arnold standing behind her, pushing the swing while she laughed with pure joy.
