Chapter 14 - The Human Choice

Rem and Amaia stepped outside of the Adventurers Guild, the air of Darkgloom's main street pressed in around them with noise and the movement of people nearby. Vendors called from their stalls, Dwarvin smiths hammered out weapons in the distance, and children ran around between the crowds. Rem adjusted Ciara in her arms and glanced towards her servant Amaia. "Do you think we will have any trouble subjugating some goblins and orcs, Amaia?"

Amaia's steel-grey eyes moved over the crowd before returning to her lady. She shook her head. "My lady, you don't seriously think there's anything to worry about with such petty creatures, do you? You don't even need to bother yourself. You could just summon more servants from the Arc to clear out these monsters, or I can do it myself. Killing low-level magical creatures like these poses no threat to either of us. Especially you your magic is beyond anything I've observed on this world. The level of sorcery here doesn't even come close to what the House of Remembrance is capable of."

Rem's red eyes narrowed as she shook her head. "But still, I should at least take this test seriously. I'm the last of humanity, and I can't make us look bad. I will get involved in this subjugation personally. If problems come up, we will handle them. From what I remember of these monster races in human mythology, goblins and orcs have a tendency to capture females and use them for breeding. If we run into that situation, we will need to act accordingly."

Amaia's brows drew together, her voice low. "My lady… are you planning to kill any of the victims we might find?"

Rem's face hardened for a moment before she shook her head. "Of course not. I'll use healing and memory-erasure magic. They won't remember their experiences, and I'll send them home. It will turn them back to normal. I'm not devoid of humanity. If someone has suffered like that, the best thing I can do is not kill them but to make it, so it seem like it never happened. Healing and mind-erasure magic can take care of this easily."

Amaia studied Rem in silence, then dipped her head slightly. Her respect for her lady deepening. This is why Rem carries the mantle of humanity her compassion, and unwillingness to abandon anyone to despair. This is the very thing that defines humans their ability to show kindness and endure hardships together.

Amaia's thoughts turned inward. Rem has lost more than anyone could ever bear her mother, her father, and all of humanity to a plague that only she is immune to. Ishtar sent her into the stars not only to preserve her ladies life, but to keep her from taking her own in despair. It is the love of a father, ensuring his daughter can find a reason to live. Now Rem walks Elsera's streets with a new fire in her eyes and a pet fox in her arms, carrying humanity's will forward.

Amaia's voice broke through her own thoughts. "My lady, would you like to stay in the city overnight, or head out on our first adventure right away? I bet you are eager to meet the Dark Elf Queen I can see it on your face. Or perhaps you would prefer to return to the Arc to rest for the night instead?"

Rem shook her head firmly. "No. We will start our adventure immediately. We can spend the night on the road. How can this be an adventure without a little hardship?" Rem's mouth curved up faintly as she said it, though Amaia knew well what these words meant. Rem wants to leave the city and vent her frustrations, likely by cutting down whatever magical creatures stood in their way on the road.
