Chapter 14 - The Name I Buried

My eyes slowly open, and I don't even remember when I fell asleep on the couch. It's already night. I reach for my phone on the table—it's off. With a sigh, I turn it back on. From the kitchen, I hear the sound of pans and soft humming. Jimmy is cooking, looking too calm, too happy, like nothing is wrong. He glances at me and smiles.

"The dinner is almost ready. Go freshen up," he says warmly.

I nod silently and drag myself to the bathroom. The moment I splash cold water on my face, a chill runs through me. It feels different, strange, like the weight pressing on me won't leave no matter how much I wash it away. I wipe my face with a towel, take a deep breath, and step out.

My phone buzzes on the table. I glance at the screen—Kyle. Again. With clenched teeth, I silence the call without answering.

Jimmy sets the dishes on the table, his voice light. "What happened?"
