"I don't have a mate." Gavin finally spat after a moment of tense silence, but I already knew that he was lying.
His eyes bore into mine for a moment too long, and for the first time, I saw something in them that I've never seen in my entire life: Irritation… and maybe anger.
Father and mother turned to him, their expressions disbelieving. But he simply shrugged at them and turned back to me. "I don't have a mate. I met a girl, yes. But that's all there is… and it's none of your damn business!"
"Why does it feel like you're protecting your mate or something? Are you hiding her?" I teased Gavin as he brought a forkful of pasta to his mouth, but as soon as I said that, his face darkened.
He spat; "Who even told you all that?"
"Kael."
"Then maybe you should go to him too. Protect or hide him… or whatever nonsense you just said!" He snapped, causing my eyes to widen in shock.
