For a very long moment, I stood there in shock, waiting to see if Beta Malakai— ex Beta Malakai—would say something more or give me an explanation as to what his words meant; But as more seconds passed, each one weaving into the next… and still, there was nothing, I knew then that he wasn't willing to speak.
He was just there, shaking like a leaf in the wind, his hands trembling as he stared at his filthy feet.
I pushed myself away from the wall I'd been leaning against for the past five minutes or so, and when I realised that he would probably never answer my question, I asked;
"Cat got your tongue, Kai?"
And at the use of his nickname, the one only my father used to call him before his demise, he raised his head to meet my gaze, a flicker of something wild fleeting past his eyes before he slowly opened his mouth.
"I don't know."
"You don't know or you don't want to say?" I asked coldly, my voice sounding as cold as the ice cubes in the bucket behind me.
