Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Offended a Big Shot?

"Besides the legendary Sky Island in this sea, there's an island called Jaya."

As if to reclaim her navigator's pride, Nami repeated intel Carina had already mentioned: "But Jaya isn't on our route, so the Log Pose can't take us there. We'll have to let Little White go up and scout its position."

"No need. I saw where it was on the way down."

Karl pointed in a direction. "Head straight that way and I'll be able to see Jaya."

"Alright, let's go!"

In about half an hour, the large three-masted ship reached Jaya.

"Jaya isn't on the Water 7 route, so I don't know this island well…"

While furling sails and dropping anchor, Carina looked at Nami and asked, "Little thief cat, do you?"

"Uh… I only know it's called Jaya. That's all."

Having just regained a bit of navigator dignity, Nami's face turned awkward.

"Then we land and gather intel."

Perona suddenly said, "I'm seeing pirate flags. Isn't this Mock Town—where pirates gather?"

Listening to the three, Karl said, "No need to scout. This place is small and there's no strong auras. We'll just go find the strongest guy."

"Fine."

Landing, they headed directly for the person with the strongest presence.

When they entered Mock Town—the island's most notorious settlement—the four-plus-one-dragon combo instantly drew countless eyes.

When the pirates and thugs saw a living dragon, their gazes turned ravenous.

Killing intent sprouted from different corners of town.

That killing intent targeted only Karl.

Carina, the other two women, and the little dragon became treasure in those eyes—pure, burning greed.

"Go keep them busy—and keep an eye on my ship."

As if he'd sensed it, Karl, for once, told the little dragon to break off from the group.

"Wraaah…"

The little dragon dipped its head, beat its wings, and flew back toward the docks,

taking most of the attention with it.

In a flash, quite a few figures slipped away.

They were about to learn how terrifying a creature of legend could be.

With the little dragon drawing off most of the greedy ones, the rest—whether out of caution or something else—didn't strike immediately, and thus kept their lives.

But soon they'd be grateful for that prudence.

Because they saw, with their own eyes, Bellamy the Hyena—the promising rookie captain of the Bellamy Pirates flying a North Blue flag under one of the underworld giants, the Donquixote Family—get one-shotted by Karl in Mock Town.

Just one Shave plus a Finger Pistol, and a 55-million-berry Paramecia Spring-Spring Fruit user had his life taken.

For scum with no dreams—who even call anyone with dreams an idiot—Karl couldn't be bothered to leave a path to redemption.

As for whether killing Bellamy would offend Donquixote Doflamingo?

Karl didn't care.

Among the Seven Warlords, aside from Boa Hancock—whose rules-type ability, like Perona's, poses the greatest threat to a shameless lecher like Karl—top-tier ones like Dracule Mihawk and Bartholomew Kuma didn't faze him, let alone Doflamingo.

After dropping Bellamy, Karl's group took over his house in Mock Town, drove out the officers and crew of the Bellamy Pirates,

then rifled through the treasure inside—and were stunned by Bellamy's stash.

"Hey, hey… seriously? Am I seeing things?"

"Did my eyes just break?"

"…"

The vault was easy to find; it was in a room, not even locked behind a safe.

Because… there was too much treasure.

The entire room was a golden mountain—piled high with all kinds of gold and jewels, even the berries were mounded up like a little hill.

"There's gotta be two billion berries in here, right?" Nami said, dazed.

"Maybe more," Carina added.

In the original tale, Luffy sold one big sack of gold for 500 million. This hoard, which filled almost the whole room—plus that hill of cash—had to be at least a billion.

Whether it was one, two, or three billion… that would be Carina's job to tally.

"If I heard right, when I killed that guy someone shouted 'Bellamy the Hyena, 55 million'…"

Suddenly Carina's face turned grave as she looked at the money-mountain before them. "So, how does a 55-million nobody have treasure on this scale—and keep it safe?"

"Carina, you mean…"

Nami's $-sign eyes snapped back to normal. Hearing that, she calmed down. "This treasure… might not actually be his?"

"Yeah."

Carina nodded, helpless. "If I'd known, I'd have asked those goons who his backing was."

"Could this be money he was going to present to some patron as a 'gift'?" Nami's face blanched.

"Highly likely. And not just his—this stash might be pooled from 'multiple people.'"

Carina nodded again. "If I'm not mistaken, the one I killed was a trusted subordinate of some big name in the first half of the Grand Line—someone everyone knows, myself included."

"So… I've caused big trouble?"

"…Scared?"

Seeing Nami spooked, Carina rolled her eyes. "After seeing Karl fight so many times, you're still a scaredy-cat?"

"I'm saying this so you don't panic later—let's figure out which big name he served… or which faction's affiliate he was. That way, we won't get blindsided down the line."

Then Carina's eyes turned into $-signs too, and she said, "Even if some big shot wants me to hand the money back—that's not happening!"
