Chapter 43 - The Magic of Valyria

After the first batch of books and magical scrolls were moved over, Marko had everyone start helping him organize the relevant materials.

Moonshadow was in charge of the Children of the Forest's runes and inscriptions, while Narkissos specifically examined the scrolls left over from the Valyrian era.

These records and books were unique to the continent of Westeros; many documents and scrolls weren't even possessed by the Citadel.

These things were also one of Marko's purposes for coming here. He hoped to find some useful information or some mission prompts from them.

Maester Aemon continued to communicate with Marko in Valyrian, although everyone was very interested in the content of their conversation.

After Marko got those scrolls, he put all of his attention on them, completely ignoring the "Pomegranate Man" who was hesitant to speak.

Although Maester Aemon's eyes were blind, his hearing was extraordinarily sensitive. He heard Bowen Marsh quietly asking the two stewards.

So the old maester patiently "explained" to him again, saying that Marko and the others had been communicating in Valyrian just now, and that they were now studying Valyrian rune scrolls.

Hearing this, Bowen Marsh, the steward of the Night's Watch, assumed Marko was one of those interested in the Valyrian civilization. Some noble offspring had come to Castle Black to inquire about such information.

After all, the legends of Valyria had always spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms. Dragons and magic held a fatal allure for many young people, and several top families of the Seven Kingdoms had come to Castle Black to examine related materials.

However, due to a lack of corresponding knowledge and foundation, many could only leave here with disappointment.

Bowen Marsh was also happy to be idle and silently helped others organize these materials.

These scrolls from the Valyrian era were all collected by Maester Aemon, and some were left over from before.

Some of the documents were even left behind by the Children of the Forest, with runes and writings personally inscribed by them.

Maester Aemon was the third son of King Aegon V and Queen Daena Targaryen. At that time, his grandfather, King Daeron II, already had four adult sons, and three of them also had their own offspring.

King Daeron II felt that having too many potential Targaryen heirs to the throne was very dangerous, so he sent Aemon to the Citadel.

Maester Aemon was exceptionally gifted and diligent. He forged his chain and earned his title in just three years.

After that, he served the Lord of House Beesbury in Honeyholt, near the Citadel, until his father, King Aegon V, summoned him to King's Landing to serve the Iron Throne.

At the time, Maester Aemon thought he might replace the Grand Maester in the Small Council. He chose to go and serve his elder brother, Prince Daeron.

Maester Aemon's brother, Prince Daeron, had awakened the Targaryen family's "Dragon Dreams" gift since childhood. He even dreamt of the return of dragons!

Because of his Dragon Dreams ability, the prince was always a little out of it, as if drunk, so he was also known as "Daeron the Drunkard."

But Maester Aemon didn't think so. He knew his brother was very talented, and the Dragon Dreams gift allowed this "drunkard" to see the secrets behind many things.

The hands behind the "Dragonpit" and "Blackfyre" made both brothers feel a chill down their spines. After receiving the revelation of the dragon's return, the two brothers began investigating relevant materials and preparing to hatch dragon eggs.

The Targaryen family, having lost their dragons, was now on the brink of disaster. They all hoped to bring dragons back to the family.

Later on, they were close to succeeding, but the "Great Spring Sickness" and the "Blackfyre Rebellion" disrupted their progress.

Later, his brother died mysteriously from "The Sickness," forcing Maester Aemon to go into hiding. He knew his actions had infringed upon the interests of certain individuals.

During this time, Maester Aemon never forgot his mission, gathering related materials and documents everywhere he went.

Brynden Rivers, the current Three-Eyed Raven in the flesh, provided significant assistance to Maester Aemon at the time. He also recognized the severity of the internal situation.

This "Lord Bloodraven" was a noble bastard who had always been loyal to the Targaryen family, repeatedly turning the tide at critical moments and upholding the family's rule.

Brynden Rivers strongly supported Maester Aemon and provided him with protection, even sending his forces to gather documents and information for him.

In Aegon's Reign, 233 AC, Maester Aemon refused the throne. To prevent anyone from using him to threaten his younger brother, Aegon V, he resolutely chose to go north, serving in the Night's Watch ever since.

At this moment, Marko suddenly said to Maester Aemon: "Valyrian You've told me all your secrets, aren't you afraid I'm one of them? Why do you trust me so much?"

"Child! Although I don't have the gift of 'Dragon Dreams', years of research and study have awakened some power within me. I can vaguely sense the power of your bloodline! The power of blood doesn't lie!"

Maester Aemon's words were steady and powerful, his tone radiating confidence.

Marko finally understood. No wonder the old maester was so kind to Jon Snow later; he must have sensed his bloodline as well.

When Rhaegar Targaryen was alive, he would communicate with his great-uncle via raven. Maester Aemon also believed Rhaegar Targaryen was the prince of prophecy.

Maester Aemon told Marko that all the magic of Valyria originated from blood and fire, unlike the rituals of the "Lord of Light" R'hllor.

The wizards and dragonlords of Valyria could use obsidian candles to cast magic. They could use the power within the obsidian candles after blood sacrifices and burning hair.

Wizards and dragonlords could see distant events, read others' thoughts, and even communicate with people from half a world away through obsidian candles.

At this moment, Marko suddenly interjected, "Then why didn't the Targaryen family continue to use magic after they came to Westeros?"

Maester Aemon sighed. "According to the family records, it seems that magic was weakened after the 'Doom of Valyria'!"

"Furthermore, this continent already possesses its own unique magical power, which has also led to the weakening of blood magic and fire magic."

"However, this power seems to have weakened considerably. In recent years, some reports from the Citadel indicate that many priests of 'Lord of Light' R'hllor claim they can receive divine revelations in Westeros."

Suddenly, Maester Aemon asked Marko, "So, what kind of magic do you use? Why can't I sense the fluctuations of those two types of magic within you?"

"That is... another magic system, or perhaps a blessing from a more powerful deity!"

After answering, Marko buried his head back into the book, not continuing the discussion about magic with the old maester. He was also afraid of revealing too much.

This old maester, who had lived for nearly a hundred years, had experienced too many things and people. Marko's initial deception might have been able to fool him for a while, but eventually, he was bound to show a flaw!

In these Valyrian scrolls, Marko learned many techniques for using blood magic and fire magic, as well as the corresponding steps for sacrificing life and chanting spells.

After reading all of that, Marko's quest log interface suddenly popped up.

"Ding! Congratulations to the host for obtaining 2 native world magics through bloodline talent and learning: the blood magic 'Fear Gaze' and the fire magic 'Phantom Fire Ring'."

"Ding! Due to the influence of the world consciousness, these two magics cannot be used normally..."

"Ding! The system has improved the two witchcraft. Ding! Congratulations to the host for learning the Level 2 Destruction magic 'Thunderbolt Lightning' and the Level 2 Warcry magic 'Fear Howl'."

"Ding! Congratulations to the host for opening a hidden quest! Omnipotent Hero! A hero must master the exclusive skills or magic of 8 factions or races. (Unfinished, 3/8) Reward: 10,000 Gold, 1 Artifact."

"Ding! Congratulations to the host for obtaining Warcry magic. Due to the influence of the host's bloodline and world consciousness, the host must use their own blood for sacrifice when using Warcry magic, and the mana consumption remains unchanged! (Note: You can use it 5 times a day. Please pay attention to your health to avoid anemia or low blood pressure!)"

"Ding! Congratulations to the host for mastering the rune knowledge of two magical civilization races! The source language runes of the Children of the Forest and the Bloodfire Runes of Valyria. The host has activated the Rune Mage talent ability!"

"Ding! The host has become a Beginner Rune Mage and can use 1-2 circle rune magic. The resource consumption is 1 point, and the resource type remains unchanged."

"Ding! Congratulations, Host, you have learned the use of the 2nd-circle rune magic 'Berserk Rune'. It can increase a soldier's combat effectiveness by 100%. After the spell is cast, the soldier will launch an unrelenting attack against enemies or targets! (Please use it with caution, Host. It is recommended that the Host can use it on summoned creatures.)"

Marko originally thought that he would also suffer from the extremely painful magic infusion this time, but he didn't expect it.

This time, the magic infusion was completely different from the rigid learning of scrolls in the Magic Guild. This was a kind of understanding from the inside out, as if these two magics were something Marko was born with.

The specific magic value consumption was the same as in the game, but because Marko's magic level was too low, he couldn't exert its true power.

The 2nd-circle rune magic "Berserk Rune" that Marko possessed, its usage was no different from normal magic. The only difference was that it would only consume resources when used.

During this time, Marko also asked the old maester about the relevant information about the "Doom of Valyria."

The old maester also didn't give a definite answer. He believed that a more credible explanation was that the Freehold of Valyria was destroyed by a magical backlash.

Maester Aemon believed that if it were really a volcanic eruption, then it would be impossible for not a single dragon to escape.

And later, some of the dragon kings who went on expeditions had tried to find surviving kin, but they all disappeared without exception in the mists of the ruins of Valyria.

"Blood magic and fire magic? Why does that feel strangely familiar?"

Marko carefully recalled this information in his mind, his head unconsciously turning towards Narkissos.

Because he, like Marko, could use magic, and to some extent, Marko's magic skills were not as good as his.

At this moment, the great mage also raised his head, his eyes also showing a trace of doubt.

Seeing this, Marko habitually activated the necromancer's special skill, "Soul Link."

After Marko obtained this skill, he had been studying this special ability, because Marko found that this ability could not only detect the emotional changes of weak enemies.

After linking to his own soldiers, he could even use this ability to communicate with his subordinates.

On the journey to Castle Black, Marko had been developing this ability. He could now skillfully link with all living creatures within a 100-meter radius.

Through the soul link, Marko said to Narkissos, "Narkissos, do you feel it? This type of magic feels familiar, like..."

Narkissos replied, "Yes, my lord! It's like chaos magic, or perhaps the magic of demons!"

Narkissos's response startled Marko. He quickly sent a message:

"Narkissos! Have you... have you recovered your memories? Do you remember anything else? Do you remember how you got here?"

"My lord! I have no memories to recover! My family once fought against these creatures. Have you forgotten?"

Marko sensed Narkissos's emotions, and found nothing amiss.

It seemed that Narkissos and the others had been implanted with certain memories by the system, leaving them with only the primary memory of serving Marko's family.

Marko always thought they came from Ashan, but now it seemed that wasn't the case!

When Narkissos mentioned Demons, Marko thought his memories from the depths of his soul had returned. However, through Soul Link, Marko found that his main memories were rather simple.

They weren't as complex as Marko had imagined, and there were no memories of Ashan. Marko felt as though they had been specifically "created" for him.

Not wanting to delve deeper, Marko used an excuse to brush the matter aside.

After that, he turned his attention back to the books and scrolls, hoping to gain some insights.

Unfortunately, in the following hours, Marko received no further clues. These documents only led him to these three spells.

Unknowingly, the time had reached evening. The entire Castle Black was immersed in an atmosphere of joy.

Although there had been banquets and gatherings when noble youths came before, they were only small-scale. Unlike this time, almost everyone could drink a large mug of ale and eat a large piece of meat.

This made many of the Night's Watch feel even more grateful to Marko. After eating their fill, everyone gathered around the fire, chatting together.

In the second half of the night, Marko mentioned that he had something to discuss with Jeor Mormont. The Lord Commander invited him to the Commander's Tower.

The Commander's Tower was a black wooden structure. The ground floor was a storage room, the middle floor was a study, and the top floor was the Commander's residence.

Accompanying them were Marko's "sister," Moonshadow, and the First Steward, Bowen Marsh.

After everyone was seated, Jeor Mormont said to Marko, "Lord Marko! Would you like tea or wine? I still have some in stock, sent by my nieces!"

Marko replied very politely, "Thank you for your hospitality, Lord Commander! I've already had some! I don't need any. Actually, I wanted to ask you something?"
