Coulson watches the Betamon disappear beneath the waves. His expression is hard to read, but I can tell he's trying to process everything he just witnessed.
"What kind of Digimon were those?" he asks, his voice tight.
"Those were Betamon," I answer. "Rookie level, Amphibian type. Not much for fighting, but they're good at scouting."
"And you're sure this will work?" Coulson asks, his eyes scanning the horizon.
"Pretty sure," I say, leaning against the railing. "Seadramon is territorial and has a big appetite. It won't be able to resist a school of Betamon swimming through its turf."
I pause, turning back to Coulson. "Just one thing. When Seadramon shows up, I need you and your people to stay on standby. This is my fight, and I don't want any interference. I can't be responsible for what happens if you get in the way."
Coulson nods slowly, his gaze unwavering. "Understood. We'll remain on standby. But if things get out of control..."
"They won't," I interrupt, my voice firm. "Trust me. I know what I'm doing."
He's quiet for a moment, then says, "I'll take your word for it, Cipher."
But I see the gears turning in his head, as he mentally reevaluates me. Summoning fifteen Digimon on the fly isn't something any random person can do. He now has a better understanding of how powerful I am. I bet he is thinking of what to tell Fury later.
Now, it's time to do some digital diving.
I reach into my pocket and pull out the Digi-Link. I put it on, and then sync it with my Digivice. The device hums to life, and suddenly, I'm seeing the ocean through a Betamon's eyes.
The view is a bit disorienting at first. The world is a murky blue, and everything seems magnified and distorted. I can feel the water rushing past me, cold and salty, and the pressure is intense. It's not my real body, but my senses are close enough that it's giving me the chills.
It's darker than I imagined down here. Sunlight doesn't penetrate to these depths, so the only light comes from the faint bioluminescence of the creatures around me. The Betamon are swimming quickly, their fins propelling them through the water with surprising speed. I guide them downward, deeper into the abyss.
"Alright, kids, spread out," I command through the Digi-Link. "Let's find that sea serpent."
The Betamon respond instantly, veering off in different directions. The view splits into fifteen different perspectives, and my head swims with the sensory overload. I focus on one Betamon at a time, scanning the surroundings for any sign of Seadramon.
We are searching the depths. It is quiet, aside from the rushing of the water.
I need to be prepared, I need to be ready.
"Seadramon, come out, come out, wherever you are." I mutter to myself.
Then, a flash of movement from Betamon Five. A long, serpentine shape darts from the shadows, and a Betamon is gone in an instant. It all happened so fast, that I almost missed it.
"Contact!" I shout through the Digi-Link. "All Betamon, return to the surface now! Five is down, I repeat, Five is down!"
The remaining Betamon turn as one, their tiny fins working overtime as they race toward the surface. I focus on the lead group, trying to guide them away from the approaching Seadramon.
"Alright, you little eels, time to kite," I say, my voice tight. "Use Electric Shock, but don't stop swimming!"
The Betamon respond instantly, unleashing bolts of electricity behind them as they swim. The water crackles with energy, and I can feel the jolt through the Digi-Link, even though it's just a sensory echo.
The Seadramon is relentless, its massive body cutting through the water with frightening speed. It ignores the electric shocks, its eyes fixed on its prey. One by one, the Betamon fall, snatched from behind by the sea serpent's jaws. Each time a connection is severed, it's like a small piece of me dies. I grit my teeth, pushing the remaining Betamon harder.
"Faster, damn it, faster!" I urge, pouring every ounce of my will into the Digi-Link.
The surface is getting closer, a shimmering circle of light above. I can almost taste the fresh air, feel the sun on my skin. Just a little further...
But it's not enough.
Betamon Seven is gone, then Three, then Two. Their numbers are dwindling, and Seadramon is gaining. I watch helplessly as it closes in on the last Betamon, its jaws agape.
"No!" I yell, but it's too late.
The connection is severed, and silence descends. The Digi-Link goes dead, leaving me in a sensory void. I pull off the headset, my hands shaking.
"Damn it!" I shout, slamming my fist against the railing. "So close..."
Then, the ocean erupts. A geyser of water explodes into the air, followed by a long, serpentine body covered in blue scales. The Seadramon rises from the depths, its full form unveiled for the first time. It's bigger than I imagined, easily the size of a school bus, with razor-sharp teeth and cold, reptilian eyes. It hisses, a sound that carries across the water and sends shivers down my spine. I scan Seadramon with my Digi-Goggles.
[Seadramon]
[Level: Champion]
[Type: Aquatic]
[Attribute: Data]
[Special Move: Ice Blast]
[An Aquatic Digimon with a serpentine body. When attacked, Seadramon will wrap its long body around the enemy and squeeze them until they suffocate. Fundamentally lacking any kind of intelligence, Seadramon swims through the Net Ocean wherever its instincts take it. Its special move is Ice Blast, by which it breathes out from its mouth at absolute zero, instantly freezing the water and blasting its opponent.]
"Showtime," I mutter, grabbing my Digivice.
Before I can even shout a command, Coulson, in his infinite wisdom, barks an order.
"Open fire!"
Seriously?
The SHIELD agents, ever obedient, unleash a hail of bullets and energy blasts at the sea serpent. The attacks ping harmlessly off its scales. The only effect is to annoy the champion-level Digimon. I can practically see the monster's reptilian eyes narrow in irritation.
"Idiots," I mutter under my breath. "Didn't they see those bullets do nothing?"
Seadramon responds with a furious roar, then inhales deeply. A frigid gust emanates from its mouth. The air around the ship instantly drops to sub-zero temperatures. Then, Seadramon unleashes its special move.
Ice Blast.
A beam of pure, concentrated cold shoots from its maw, slamming into the ship's hull. The metal groans and buckles. Frost spreads rapidly, encasing the deck in a thick layer of ice. The entire vessel shudders violently. I can barely keep my footing as the world tilts beneath me.
"What the hell was that?!" I shout at Coulson over the blaring alarms.
I have to give it to him. He doesn't even flinch. He just glares back at me with that infuriatingly calm expression. I am so going to make him pay for that later. If there is a later, with all this ice!
"I thought we could weaken it," he replies, his voice tight.
I roll my eyes. "Yeah, well, all you did was piss it off!"
Now, it is time to end this and get off this ice cube of a ship.
