The morning sun cast long shadows over the commercial district of Konoha as Naruto walked with determination toward his destination, wearing his freshly washed orange jacket, his polished ninja headband, and most importantly, carrying his frog wallet securely in his pocket. The Chūnin Exams began in six days and he needed to be prepared. His teammates had their own preparations, for Sakura was with Tsunade reviewing medical supplies and last-minute training tips, while Sasuke was under strict medical observation performing light exercises under his sensei's watchful eye, leaving Naruto free to take care of the practical matters involving weapons, tools, and equipment.
He turned a corner and found himself in front of a shop he had passed countless times but never really noticed, where the sign read "Higurashi Weapons Shop" in elegant calligraphy, and the window displayed an impressive variety of kunais, shurikens, and exotic weapons that made Naruto's eyes widen with interest. A wind chime rang softly when he pushed the door open, revealing an interior larger than it appeared from the outside, with walls lined with weapons of every conceivable type including swords, staffs, chains, specialized kunais, explosive tags, wire, and smoke bombs, all organized with meticulous care.
"Welcome!" a cheerful female voice rang out.
Naruto looked toward the counter to see a girl his age with dark hair styled in two buns, wearing a pink Chinese-style sleeveless blouse and displaying an energetic and friendly attitude that immediately made him feel comfortable as she arranged a ninja star display with practiced precision.
"Hello!" Naruto approached the counter with his characteristic enthusiasm. "This place is amazing! I've never seen so many weapons in one place!"
The girl smiled, clearly pleased by his genuine excitement. "Thanks! My parents own this shop, by the way, I'm Tenten. Are you looking for something specific or just browsing?"
"I'm Naruto Uzumaki!" he declared, taking out his frog wallet with a theatrical gesture. "And I need to stock up for the Chūnin Exams! I need kunais, shurikens, maybe some wire, definitely some explosive tags, and..." he looked around with wide eyes, "anything else you think a future Hokage might need!"
Tenten blinked at his introduction and then laughed with genuine amusement. "Future Hokage? That is a big goal. And you're participating in the Chūnin Exams too?"
"Yes! My whole team is! Well, mostly," Naruto corrected, thinking of Sasuke's recent recovery. "We are Team Seven with Kakashi-sensei!"
"Team Seven," Tenten repeated, her expression becoming more focused. "You guys are the team that went to the Land of Waves, right? I heard about that mission since it was supposed to be C-rank but turned into something much more dangerous."
"News flies fast," Naruto observed.
"Weapons shop," Tenten explained with a knowing smile. "Ninjas come here all the time and we hear things, so your team made quite an impression."
Naruto rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed but pleased. "My whole team worked together and that was what made us strong."
Tenten studied him with new interest. "Well then, future Hokage," she said, coming out from behind the counter, "let me show you what we have, since if you are preparing for the Chūnin Exams you will want quality gear that won't fail you in critical moments."
She led him to a kunai display, taking one with a practiced grip. "These are our standard combat kunais, balanced for both throwing and hand-to-hand combat, with reinforced steel to withstand hard impacts without breaking."
Naruto took the kunai she offered, testing its weight. "It feels good! Really solid!"
"Now these," Tenten moved to another display, "are specialized throwing kunais; they are lighter, designed specifically for ranged combat, although the downside is that they aren't as durable in direct clashes, but they fly faster and with greater precision."
"Wow!" Naruto's eyes lit up. "So different kunais for different situations!"
"Exactly!" Tenten clearly enjoyed having such an enthusiastic student. "A good ninja understands their tools. Let me show you the shurikens."
She guided him through the shop, explaining the differences between standard shurikens, windmill shurikens, and special designs, demonstrating how wire could be used for traps, binding, or even as a weapon itself, and showing him different types of explosive tags while explaining their varied blast radii and activation methods.
"You really know a lot about this stuff!" Naruto said, genuinely impressed. "Did you learn all this from your parents?"
"Partly," Tenten admitted, organizing a display of senbon needles. "But mainly from my own training, since I specialize in weapons; it is my style of ninjutsu, I use summoning scrolls to store and deploy weapons in combat."
"That's cool!" Naruto leaned forward with interest. "So you can just summon weapons when you need them?"
"Kind of," Tenten smiled at his enthusiasm. "It takes a lot of practice to get the timing and precision right, but when it works it is very effective."
"I bet! Hey, are you taking the Chūnin Exams too?"
"Yes," Tenten confirmed, and for a moment a flicker of nervousness crossed her face. "My team is entering, I'm on Team Guy with Rock Lee and Neji Hyūga."
Naruto's expression changed immediately. "Neji? You mean Neji Hyūga? Hinata-chan's cousin?"
"You know Hinata?" Tenten asked, surprised.
"Yes! She is..." Naruto paused, considering how to explain their relationship. "She is really important to me and has been training hard for the exams too; she has become very strong!"
Tenten's expression became complicated. "I see. Well, Neji is... he is very strong too, probably the strongest genin of our year."
There was something in her tone that made Naruto look at her more closely. "You sound worried."
"I'm nervous," Tenten admitted, turning to rearrange some weapons that were already perfectly aligned. "The Chūnin Exams are supposed to be really difficult and my team... well, Lee and Neji are incredibly talented, which makes me wonder sometimes if I'm good enough to keep up with them."
"Hey!" Naruto's voice was firm enough to make her look at him. "Don't talk like that! If you are on a team with those guys it is because you belong there, your sensei wouldn't have put you together if you weren't strong enough!"
"That's easy to say," Tenten said quietly.
"No, it's the truth!" Naruto insisted. "I used to think the same way about my team; Sasuke was the top student and Sakura-chan is super smart, so I thought I was just the dead last who got lucky. But do you know what I found out?"
"What?"
"Teams aren't about everyone having the same kind of strength," Naruto said, his blue eyes intense with conviction. "They are about different strengths working together. You said you specialize in weapons, right? That is YOUR strength! I bet Lee and Neji can't do what you do!"
Tenten blinked, processing his words.
"And besides," Naruto continued with a grin, "you already helped me understand all these weapons in like ten minutes! That's amazing! I bet you are way smarter about this stuff than the two of them put together!"
A genuine smile spread across Tenten's face. "You know what? You're right. I am really good with weapons, that is my ninjutsu and I have worked hard to master it."
"That's the spirit!" Naruto raised a fist. "We are all going to do great in these exams! I can feel it!"
"You are pretty optimistic for someone about to face one of the hardest tests in a ninja's career," Tenten observed, but her tone was lighter now, almost teasing.
"Of course I am! I have to be!" Naruto declared. "I'm going to be Hokage someday, so I can't let something like the Chūnin Exams scare me! Besides, my team is counting on me, and I don't let my team down!"
"Your team is lucky to have someone so positive," Tenten said sincerely. "Lee is like that too, always optimistic, always pushing forward... it is inspiring."
"Then let's inspire everyone!" Naruto grinned. "You, me, Lee, all of us! We'll show them what the new generation can do!"
Tenten laughed, the earlier nervousness completely gone. "Alright, future Hokage, let's get you properly equipped, because if you are going to inspire everyone you will need the right tools."
She began selecting items with professional efficiency, explaining each choice as she did so. "For you I would recommend the standard kunais, they are versatile and reliable. How many do you usually carry?"
"Uh..." Naruto thought about it. "Maybe twenty?"
"Let's make it thirty," Tenten decided. "The nature of the Chūnin Exams usually involves extended operations and you will want extras. Same with the shurikens, I'll give you forty."
"Forty shurikens?" Naruto's eyes went wide.
"Trust me," Tenten said with a knowing smile. "Better to have too many than too few. Now, wire, do you know how to set traps?"
"Kind of? Kakashi-sensei taught me some basics."
"I'll include a good length of ninja wire then, it is useful for more than just traps; you can use it for climbing, creating barriers, even as a weapon if you are creative enough."
She continued gathering his gear, adding explosive tags, smoke bombs, and a few other items Naruto hadn't even considered, and as she explained the strategic applications of each tool, Naruto found himself genuinely learning from her expertise.
"You are really good at this," Naruto observed as she worked. "Like, really good. Your teammates should appreciate having someone who understands all this tactical stuff."
Tenten paused in her work, looking at him with something akin to gratitude. "Thanks, Naruto. That... that really means a lot."
"Just telling the truth!" Naruto said cheerfully. "Hey, maybe after the exams we could train together sometime! You could teach me more about weapons and I could... well, I'm really good with shadow clones! I could teach you that!"
"Shadow clones?" Tenten's interest was piqued immediately. "That is an advanced technique. You can use it?"
"Yeah! It's kind of a specialty of mine! I can make tons of them!"
"That would actually be very useful for my training," Tenten said thoughtfully. "Having multiple targets to practice precision throwing... Yes, I would like that! It's a deal: after the exams we train together!"
They shook hands, both smiling at the prospect of a new training partnership, until the door chime rang again.
Both Naruto and Tenten looked toward the entrance as a new customer walked in: a girl tall for her age, with blonde hair tied in four ponytails and sharp, calculating teal eyes, wearing a black combat outfit with a red sash and carrying a huge folding fan strapped to her back, whose forehead protector bore the symbol of Sunagakure, the Hidden Sand Village. Temari stopped just inside the door, her gaze sweeping the shop with a professional assessment before settling on its two current occupants.
"Welcome!" Tenten greeted her with practiced customer service politeness, although Naruto noticed a slight tension in her posture, for a foreign ninja, especially one from another village participating in the exams, was someone to be cautious about.
Temari nodded in acknowledgment but didn't answer immediately, letting her eyes linger on Naruto for a moment with recognition flickering in her expression. Naruto, for his part, recognized her too since he had seen her around the village in the last few days; she was part of the Sand Village team participating in the exams and he had noticed her mainly because she stood out: tall, confident, and carrying that huge fan as if it weighed nothing.
This was their first real interaction.
"I need to restock basic supplies," Temari said, her tone professional and direct. "Kunais, shurikens, wire. Standard combat load."
"Of course," Tenten said, moving to the appropriate displays. "Any specific preference for weight or balance?"
"Standard is fine," Temari said. "I rely more on my fan for combat, but backup weapons are necessary."
"Your fan?" Naruto asked before he could stop himself. "That is your main weapon? That's cool! I've never seen anyone fight with a fan before!"
Temari looked at him, her expression unreadable. "It is a battle fan. Wind-based techniques. And you are...?"
"Naruto Uzumaki!" he introduced himself with his characteristic energy. "I'm a Konoha genin! Taking the Chūnin Exams too!"
"I guessed that," Temari said dryly, looking at the pile of weapons Tenten had gathered for him. "You are stocking up quite well."
"Can't be too prepared!" Naruto declared. "These exams are supposed to be really hard, right? So I want to make sure I have everything I need!"
"Preparation is important," Temari agreed, her tone slightly less cold. "Although equipment alone won't guarantee success."
"Oh, I know!" Naruto said cheerfully. "That's why I've been training hard too! Me and my whole team! We are going to give it our all!"
Temari studied him with those sharp teal eyes, and Naruto got the distinct impression she was evaluating him, measuring his worth as a potential opponent or threat. "Your team," Temari said after a moment. "Would that be the team that handled the incident in the Land of Waves?"
"You heard about that?" Naruto asked, surprised.
"Information travels," Temari said simply. "Especially information about teams participating in the exams, and your mission record is... unusual for rookie genin."
"We got lucky," Naruto said, then reconsidered. "Well, not lucky exactly; we worked hard and we worked together, that was what made the difference."
"Teamwork," Temari repeated, something shifting in her expression. "An important quality, although it won't help you in the individual parts of the exam."
"Maybe not," Naruto agreed. "But it will help us get there! And besides, even in individual tests I will be fighting for my team, that makes me stronger!"
Temari's eyebrow raised slightly. "Fighting for your team makes you stronger? That is an optimistic philosophy."
"It's not philosophy, it's a fact!" Naruto insisted. "When you have people counting on you, people you want to protect, it gives you a reason to try harder, to go beyond your limits! Don't you feel the same about your team?"
For a brief moment something complicated flickered across Temari's face: worry, unease, maybe even fear, but it vanished so quickly Naruto almost thought he had imagined it.
"My team is... complicated," Temari said carefully. "But we are strong and we will do well in the exams."
Tenten, who had been silently gathering Temari's order while listening to the conversation, spoke up. "The Sand Village has a reputation for producing skilled ninjas, I'm sure you will all perform well."
"Thank you," Temari said, accepting the gathered weapons, counting out the payment with practiced efficiency before pausing before leaving to look at Naruto again with a thoughtful expression.
"Naruto Uzumaki," she said, testing the name. "I will remember it. You have an interesting energy."
"Thanks!" Naruto grinned. "Good luck in the exams! May the best ninja win!"
"Indeed," Temari said. "Although I should warn you that my younger brother is also participating and if you run into him..." she hesitated, choosing her words carefully, "be cautious, he is very strong and very... intense."
"Intense?" Naruto tilted his head. "What do you mean?"
"You will understand if you meet him," Temari said. "His name is Gaara, he has red hair and carries a gourd of sand, so if you are smart you will avoid confrontation with him."
"Why?" Naruto asked directly. "Is he dangerous?"
"Very," Temari said without hesitation. "More than you can imagine."
"Temari!" a male voice called from outside the shop. "Stop socializing and let's go! We have a schedule!"
Temari's expression tightened with annoyance. "That is Kankuro, my other brother. I should go. But seriously, Uzumaki: stay away from Gaara if you value your life."
Before Naruto could respond she was gone, the chime marking her departure. The silence filled the shop for a moment.
"That was... ominous," Tenten said finally.
"Yeah," Naruto agreed, staring at the door where Temari had exited. "She seemed really worried about her brother, like she was afraid of him."
"Did you feel that?" Tenten asked quietly. "When she talked about him her chakra changed, she was genuinely scared."
Naruto had felt it, although he hadn't identified it as a chakra change, since the [Leader Link] had given him greater sensitivity to other people's emotional states and Temari's fear had been palpable.
"What kind of person scares his own sister like that?" Naruto wondered aloud.
"Someone dangerous," Tenten said seriously. "You should listen to her warning, Naruto. If a kunoichi from the Sand Village, someone who is clearly strong, warns you to stay away from her brother... that is not something to ignore."
"Maybe," Naruto said thoughtfully. "Or maybe he is just misunderstood."
Tenten looked at him sharply. "What do you mean?"
Naruto realized he had said too much. "I just mean that... sometimes people are afraid of things they don't understand," he said instead. "Maybe this Gaara guy is dealing with something difficult and his sister is worried but doesn't know how to help him."
"That is a very generous interpretation," Tenten observed.
"Well, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt," Naruto said with a shrug. "Besides, we are all competing in the same exam, right? We will probably meet him eventually, so I can make my own judgment then."
"Just be careful," Tenten urged. "Promise me you won't do anything reckless?"
"I promise I'll be smart about it," Naruto said, which wasn't exactly the same thing but it was the best he could offer.
Tenten sighed but smiled. "I guess that's the best I'm going to get from you. Alright, let me finish calculating your total."
She tallied up his purchases and Naruto opened his frog wallet to pay; the amount was significant, for quality ninja gear wasn't cheap, but he had carefully saved what Tsunade had given him and this was an investment in his future, in his dream.
"Here you go," Tenten said, handing him several sealed scrolls containing his purchased gear. "I've organized everything into storage scrolls for easy transport: the kunais and shurikens are in this one, the wire and utility items in this one, and the explosive materials in this separate one for safety."
"Wow, you even organized it for me!" Naruto said, impressed. "Thanks, Tenten!"
"It's part of the service," Tenten said, but she was clearly pleased by his gratitude. "And remember: after the exams, training session!"
"Definitely!" Naruto agreed enthusiastically. "I'll bring my teammate Sakura too! She has been getting really strong lately! You will like her!"
"I look forward to it," Tenten said sincerely.
As Naruto prepared to leave, he paused at the door. "Hey, Tenten?"
"Yes?"
"You will do great in the exams," he said seriously. "I meant what I said earlier: you are strong in your own way and that is what matters, so don't let anyone make you doubt that."
Tenten felt a warmth bloom in her chest. "Thanks, Naruto. That... that really helps."
"No problem! That's what friends do, right?"
"Friends?" Tenten repeated, surprised.
"Yeah! We are friends now!" Naruto declared as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "We talked, we helped each other, we are going to train together... that makes us friends!"
Tenten found herself smiling, genuinely moved by his simple and direct approach to connection. "Alright then, we are friends. Good luck, Naruto."
"You too!" Naruto waved and walked through the door, the chime singing his departure.
Tenten watched him go, this energetic blonde boy who had entered her shop as a stranger and was leaving as a friend, thinking that there was something special about him, something that made people want to believe in themselves, want to try harder, want to be better. She understood now why his team had survived the Land of Waves mission; it wasn't just skill or power, it was that contagious determination, that absolute refusal to give up or let others give up.
The Chūnin Exams were going to be interesting indeed.
Naruto walked through the streets of Konoha with his new equipment secured in the storage scrolls, his mind processing the morning's encounters. Meeting Tenten had been great, as she was skilled, knowledgeable, and had that same kind of dedication to her craft that he was learning to appreciate in people, but the meeting with Temari remained in his thoughts. Her warning about Gaara had been genuine, driven by real fear, and that fear had been for Naruto's safety, warning a potential opponent about danger, which suggested that Temari wasn't a bad person: she was protective, cautious, and worried about her brother.
Which raised the question: what kind of person was Gaara?
The [Leader Link] pulsed softly in the back of his mind, his connection to his "family" being a constant and reassuring presence; Hinata was training with Kurenai, Sakura was with Tsunade, Ino was making her own preparations with her team, and Anko was resting at home. All were safe, all were preparing. Soon the Chūnin Exams would begin and everything would change, but today he still had preparations to make.
Naruto adjusted his grip on the storage scrolls and headed toward the training grounds, wanting to test out some of his new gear and get familiar with the balance and weight before the exams began, since Kakashi-sensei had taught him that familiarity with your tools could mean the difference between success and failure in critical moments.
As he walked he thought again of Temari's words: "Be cautious. He is very strong and very... intense."
Naruto had dealt with intense before and had earned the respect of Tsunade herself. Whatever this Gaara was, whatever made him so terrifying that his own sister warned strangers about him, Naruto would face him when the time came.
Because that is what ninjas did.
They faced the difficult, the dangerous, the seemingly impossible, and found a way through it.
"Alright, Chūnin Exams," Naruto said to himself, his voice thick with determination. "Bring it on. Team Seven is ready."
The afternoon sun cast his long shadow across the street as he walked, and somewhere in the distance, he could hear the sounds of other genin training, all preparing for the same challenge. In six days it would be the beginning.
But today, he was ready.
