"Don't you dare lay a finger on him, Carlos. Miguel is completely innocent in this mess!" I stepped forward, determined to protect an innocent man from Carlos's misplaced rage.
"There it is again! Why do you always rush to his defense? It's because you have feelings for him, isn't it?"
"Absolutely not! I don't love him at all! God, Carlos, do you honestly believe my love means so little?!"
"I simply can't trust you, Grace," Carlos's voice turned ice-cold, though his face showed the raw pain our fight was causing him. "Why do you constantly shield him? Am I not supposed to be your only one?"
"Then tell me what I need to do to earn your trust?" I demanded. "I've told you repeatedly that you're my everything, that I have zero romantic interest in Miguel. But you won't—No, you refuse to believe me!"
