I hated him.

Hayden was my best friend, my shadow, and the boy who loved me too much. He chased me with shameless devotion, but I could never return it; not when he was perfect and rich, and I was nothing but the useless “caretaker girl” dragged into his world. 

So I rejected him.

The night I turned him away, he died. And fate was cruel; because whenever Hayden died, I died too. Over and over again.

Until I opened my eyes to the past.

This time, I refuse to repeat my mistake. I will chase him instead. Even if he no longer looks at me. Even if he says he doesn’t want me. Even if his eyes are only for his fiancée, the daughter of my mother’s powerful boss.

If losing Hayden once destroyed me, losing him again will destroy my soul.

I had him backed against the cold wall, my fingers tugging lightly at his tie. “Funny," I whispered. "You can fight a whole team of rivals, but you can’t even fight me.”

“Porter,” he growled, trying to look anywhere but at my lips.

On my tippy toe, I tilted my head, letting my breath warm against his mouth. “Say it again." I teased. "Louder. Make me believe you actually want me to stop. And I will stop.”

But when he didn’t—when silence stretched between us—my lips crashed against his; hot and reckless. And instead of pushing me away, his hands caught my waist, dragging me in as if he’d wanted this all along.

"I'm not finished." I straightened, chin high. "I want into Class Elite. No exams. No tests."


Daniels scoffed. "Impossible. No one enters Elite without passing."


Brown rubbed his temples, exasperated. "Do you realize what you're asking? You were expelled for cheating on an Elite exam. How do I justify letting you back in—and into Class Elite of all places?"


I shrugged. "Not my problem. Make it happen."


I sighed, dragging a hand down my face. "Okay."


He hesitated. "Okay? Then maybe I could… give you cash instead."


I leaned back into the sofa, eyes glinting. "Hmm. That'd be nice too. But I wonder what your wife would think if she found out she was right all along. You cheating… and with a man."
