Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Hidden Room

Sean kept Professor Snape's schedule at the forefront of his mind. Though Snape hadn't explicitly banned him from brewing potions in the dungeon, Sean decided to steer clear of him anyway. There was plenty of room to maneuver.

After all, Snape was one of Hogwarts' busiest people. As a professor, he graded assignments, tracked the progress of at least twelve classes, and prepared lessons. As Head of Slytherin, he mediated student disputes, kept an eye out for budding romances, and dealt with all sorts of issues. And then there were the special tasks Dumbledore assigned him.

No wonder Snape was so irritable. Between his relentless workload and handling troublesome students, it was a miracle he hadn't snapped entirely. Sean could just imagine it: "Merlin's beard, Professor Snape, the Gryffindors are stirring up trouble again!" All that, and no teaching assistant to help.

If Sean remembered correctly, Snape's office was even on the opposite end of the dungeons. Plenty of wiggle room there.

With that thought, the Great Hall's fireplace seemed to burn a little warmer. Its flames flickered on the stone walls, casting dancing shadows as two figures passed by.

"I've got to say, I've never found a Charms essay this easy to write," Justin said, a slight grin on his face. He carried a magical lantern in his left hand and tucked a five-inch Charms essay and a light blue notebook into his bag with his right.

"Oh, please, Justin," Hermione replied, raising her chin and squinting at him with a look that screamed you're not fooling anyone. "Wasn't it just a couple of days ago you were whining that essays were harder than horseback riding?"

She hugged a towering stack of books as they stepped into the Great Hall, the faint scent of ink clinging to them. They'd clearly just come from the library.

Writing a good essay was no easy feat. Take the Charms assignment: Here's how you wave your wand, here's how you say the spell. Now write a five-inch essay on the Levitation Charm. Most first-years' reaction? Me? Seriously?

It sounded simple, but it demanded exploration and critical thinking. Without hours in the library, you were sunk. Finding the right references was lesson number one. Hermione, who'd practically memorized every first-year textbook, could track down sources in a snap. Justin, less familiar with the books, struggled to keep up—especially with Professor Binns' confusing History of Magic essay thrown into the mix. For students aiming to do well, it was pure agony.

But today, Justin had not only finished his foot-long History of Magic essay, he'd also whipped up his Levitation Charm essay in just three hours—a task so extra even Hermione hadn't managed it that fast.

"You wrote a solid Charms essay, but your Wingardium Leviosa didn't improve one bit this afternoon," Hermione said, glancing at Justin with a raised eyebrow. "I'm guessing you borrowed someone's work. Let me guess—Sean?"

"Alright, you're half right," Justin said, not the least bit embarrassed. He grinned sincerely. "Sean shared his method with me. I'd love to tell you, but I should probably check with him first… Look, there he is!"

Hermione let out a skeptical "Oh," unconvinced a first-year's method could be that special, even if it was Sean's. Still, her eyes scanned the bustling Great Hall, filled with students in identical uniforms, wondering if Justin had mistaken someone else for him.

Just then, Justin plopped down at a table. "Sean!" he called warmly.

"Mm," Sean replied, barely looking up from his fierce battle with a roast chicken.

"Would you mind…" Justin started, lowering his voice.

"Nope," came a muffled reply from somewhere inside the chicken.

"Great!" Justin's smile widened as he handed Hermione a sheet of parchment. "You've got to see this, Hermione."

"Fine, but I'm not convinced it's anything special," she said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she took the parchment.

Ten minutes later, Sean was sipping pumpkin juice, its sweet taste lifting his mood. "I've got to say, this structure is genius," Hermione muttered, sounding frustrated. "If I'd seen this earlier…"

Sean's hand wobbled, nearly spilling his juice. He glanced over to see Hermione's face turning red, her ears faintly pink. "Sean, I mean…" she stammered, clearly unused to her praise being overheard.

Luckily, Sean was too focused on his food to notice, and Justin was quick on his feet. "What she means is, your essay method is brilliant!" he said smoothly, steering the conversation. "And your Charms notes? If only I could apply the theory to practice…"

"Practice is key," Sean said with a nod, his mind already wandering to the dungeons.

The answer was obvious: the dungeons were a no-go tonight. Snape was likely brewing potions down there, and that could take hours. So Sean decided to dedicate the evening to his other six subjects, with Charms being the most practical.

Finding a place to practice spells became his goal for the night.

"Want to practice Charms with us, Sean?" Justin asked suddenly, his light gray eyes brightening.

Sean paused, caught off guard.

A few minutes later, three figures moved slowly through a corridor and up a spiral staircase. Hogwarts had 142 staircases, each with its own quirks. Some were wide and grand, others narrow and rickety. Some led to different places on Fridays, and some had vanishing steps you had to jump over. Then there were the doors—some wouldn't open unless you asked politely or poked the right spot, while others weren't doors at all, just solid walls disguised as entrances.

Figuring out what was where was no easy task, especially since everything seemed to move. Even the people in the portraits wandered between frames, and Justin swore the suits of armor could walk.

In a castle this unpredictable, a hidden room didn't seem so strange after all.
