"I don't think they'll show up."

Elodie hissed, standing beside Julian—whose height made her look like she was still in preschool. Her sharp eyes darted out through the open space of the building, scanning for any sign of Sebastian or Kairen.

"I only care about Kairen," Julian muttered, not even flinching.

The office buzzed alive behind them. Staff were settling in; faint traces of antiseptic and air freshener lingered in the air

Ms. Jo and her crew had clearly done their morning magic. The soft hum of the AC wrapped the lobby in cool serenity, but for the two people standing by the entrance, it was anything but serene.

Julian was worried.

Kairen hadn't shown up yesterday, even after promising he would once he left with Sebastian. He'd wanted to call, but what was the point? Kairen barely ever picked up.
