The conversation between Christopher Nolan and Claire Lee dragged on for a while.
Dujuan, bursting with things to say, finally let out a sigh of relief once they stepped out of the tent. "That song's really amazing!"
"Haha, right? Every ordinary person's a hero. It fits Batman perfectly. I hope it blows up," Claire said.
"Absolutely, for Simon!" Dujuan's face softened into a warm smile, catching Claire off guard as she linked her arm with his.
The two froze in place, the romantic tension amplified by the decadent lights and pink-hued atmosphere. As Claire noticed Dujuan's eyelashes brushing her eyelids, he closed his eyes, leaning in for a kiss—
"Hey, the director and I have been waiting forever!" Jason Statham's voice shattered the moment. "Back home, no one's gonna care what you two get up to in bed!"
But when Jason realized the woman beside Claire wasn't Jessica Jung, he paused, then quickly recovered with a grin. "You look a lot like Shu Qi!"
Dujuan burst out laughing at the compliment, though her cheeks flushed red down to her neck. The cozy moment was thoroughly ruined, but Claire suddenly turned to her. "Do you want to act?"
Dujuan blinked, not quite processing, until she noticed a scruffy, imposing man sitting alone in a quiet corner. She wondered who he was.
Claire, acting like they were old pals, plopped down beside Luc Besson. "What do you think of my friend here?"
"She's great, but her look limits her roles, like your childhood friend," Luc said. "Megan's lucky—she landed the full Transformers contract."
Dujuan nodded politely at Luc's critique. Claire kept stealing glances at her when Megan's name came up, but Dujuan stayed composed, just listening.
"You could try horror directors. Taken isn't right for her, but horror's great for outsiders breaking in. A big box office could set her up nicely," Luc said, brushing off Claire's suggestion but softening the blow with an explanation to save face for him and Jason.
Dujuan's face betrayed a flicker of disappointment. In the cutthroat modeling world, where new faces replaced old ones overnight, failing to bring in money meant dropping to third-tier status fast. She'd been thrilled realizing this was Luc Besson, but now her emotions were a rollercoaster.
Jason, unfazed, chimed in with a quip. "Oh, come on, Mr. Director, stop torturing the lovebirds and give 'em the good news already."
His playful remark broke the tense mood.
Claire stayed cool. Jason's earlier words were clearly a thank-you—The Bank Job's box office had been revived by the "Unity Fund" stunt, and Jason owed Claire big time.
"British and French films are rare, and with your Benzema drama, things are tricky," Luc said. "But there's a Hong Kong movie, Hot Summer Days, backed by Star Media. If you're interested, I can put in a word with old Murdoch—he was my shareholder once."
Claire's eyes lit up. Luc Besson, head of EuropaCorp, France's biggest film studio, was the closest he'd come to the entertainment industry's elite. But just as Claire was about to dig deeper, Jason pulled him away.
"I was trying to get in good with the director," Claire grumbled.
"I can't swing big roles, but small ones? My name's got pull," Jason said, taking a glass of red wine from Dujuan with a grateful nod. "You probably don't know, but Luc's under a lot of pressure. The U.S. banking sector's tightening up, and the film investment market's shaky. Next year's gonna be rough for the industry."
Claire's blood ran cold. Both Jason and Luc were feeling the ripple effects of the U.S. real estate slump. With Claire Tickets gearing up for an IPO and Series A funding still up in the air, the 2008 financial crisis loomed large in his memory—a global wrecking ball.
Dujuan, sensing his unease, gently took the water glass from his hand and whispered, "You tired?"
"Nah, just remembered something that's got me in a bad mood," Claire sighed.
Jason, catching the couple's hushed exchange, smirked and wandered off toward the dance floor with his wine.
"You done here? If you are, let's head home," Dujuan said.
"Sure," Claire replied. Without waiting for him to say more, Dujuan slipped her arm through his, and they quietly left the banquet.
In the car, Claire flipped through the nearly 100 business cards they'd collected, chuckling. "No wonder everyone loves these banquets. Networking's a breeze."
Dujuan's face lit up with that captivating smile again. "And I might get to act! Thank you!"
