Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Timid Fang and a Friend of a Friend Isn’t My Friend

Inside Hagrid's hut, Lucien let out a satisfied, "Phew, the permanent Transfiguration's done."

He eyed the metal ring in front of him, crafted from an old, discarded cup. After diving into the papers and books Professor McGonagall had given him, he'd tried his hand at semi-permanent Transfiguration for the first time. To his surprise, it went off without a hitch.

Guess that top-tier Transfiguration talent really is something else, he thought. Having the research of those before him didn't hurt either—his learning speed was downright unfair.

With the permanent Transfiguration nailed, he could move on to crafting and assembling mechanical animal forms. Just one thing left: adhesive. Tomorrow night, I'll borrow some blood from that three-headed dog. He wondered if Harry still remembered where Fluffy's room was. If not, Hermione would know—her memory was sharp, and she was way more reliable than Harry or Ron at this stage.

Lucien glanced at the metal ring. For his first attempt at permanent Transfiguration, he hadn't poured in much magic. It'd probably revert to its original form in about ten minutes.

Might as well test for flaws.

"Hagrid, can you help me out?" Lucien asked.

Hagrid set Fang down. "Course, no problem."

Lucien handed him the metal ring. "Can you channel some magic into it? No spells, just raw magic."

Hagrid nodded, pulling a pink umbrella from his coat. Lucien's lips twitched. That umbrella was clearly hiding Hagrid's wand—what a quirky disguise. A half-giant, nearly ten feet tall, wielding a tiny pink umbrella shorter than his forearm? The image was absurdly charming.

Hagrid passed the ring back, and Lucien inspected it carefully. No issues—still stable.

"Oh, Hagrid, mind if I borrow Fang? I want to take him for a walk in the Forbidden Forest."

"Sure thing," Hagrid said. "But don't go too deep. It's dangerous out there, and Fang's a bit of a scaredy-cat. Might bolt if he gets spooked."

Lucien nodded, then flicked his wand. The metal ring floated toward Fang's head, expanding to fit around his neck before shrinking to a snug size. With another wave, spikes sprouted along the ring's outer edge, and a thin chain extended into Lucien's hand.

"Blimey, that's some fancy magic," Hagrid said, delighted. "That spiked collar looks right cute on Fang."

Lucien glanced at the massive, black boarhound, now sporting a spiked collar that screamed "vicious beast." His intention was to protect Fang's neck from wild animals, but if Hagrid thought it was "cute," well, who was he to argue? In Hagrid's eyes, everything was adorable—Fang, Fluffy, even the Acromantulas deep in the Forbidden Forest.

Speaking of Acromantulas… Lucien figured he could hunt for some while he was out there. Their venom would be perfect for brewing the "Truth's Delay" potion, and they were a magical creature worth documenting.

Bidding Hagrid goodbye, Lucien led Fang into the Forbidden Forest. As they ventured a bit deeper, Fang started glancing around nervously. If Lucien hadn't noticed the dog's tucked tail and trembling hind legs, he might've thought Fang was diligently scouting the area.

"Luster," Lucien called.

The little qilin appeared in a flash.

"Woof! Whine—" Fang let out a startled bark, then whimpered, ducking behind Lucien. Even with Lucien's frame, there was no hiding Fang's hulking body.

Lucien rubbed the dog's head with a wry smile. This guy's really that timid? Even a qilin, which naturally drew animals in, scared him?

After some gentle coaxing, Fang finally stopped cowering. Just as Lucien was about to introduce him to Luster, a white blur streaked toward them like lightning. It stopped about twenty meters away, revealing a magnificent white horse adorned with intricate silver patterns and a spiraled horn on its forehead.

A unicorn!

Rare and swift, their horns, hair, and blood held potent magical properties. Also Voldemort's favorite blood bank, Lucien noted wryly.

He was debating whether to record it when the unicorn approached with graceful, rhythmic steps. It stopped in front of Luster, locking eyes with the qilin for a moment before bowing its head.

Lucien connected with Luster telepathically. "What's going on?"

"Master, this horned horse sensed me nearby. It says I'm powerful, sacred, peaceful, beautiful, kind…"

"Hold up," Lucien interrupted. "That's a unicorn. And don't just throw around those adjectives I taught you the other day."

"Oh, but that's really what it said about me!" Luster insisted.

Lucien rolled his eyes. Unicorns must have some sharp senses to pick up on Luster's presence and come running. He reached out to pet the unicorn, but it jerked its head away. Then, glancing at Luster, it leaned back toward him—only to dodge again when his hand got close.

Lucien froze, hand hovering in midair. Is this unicorn messing with me?

"Master," Luster's voice chimed in his mind, "it says it only likes witches."

Lucien's mouth twitched. Of course. Books always said unicorns preferred witches. Wonder if a wizard could use Polyjuice Potion to trick one? Would it get mad and gore me if it found out?

Since it wouldn't let him touch it, Lucien skipped recording its data. Besides, he'd need measurements from both a male and female for a complete entry. He signaled Luster to shoo the unicorn away.

"Luster, did you find the Acromantula nest I asked about?"

Getting a yes, Lucien patted Fang's head and let Luster Apparate them to the area.

Near a boulder draped in white webbing, Lucien—cloaked in a Disillusionment Charm and Invisibility Essence—recorded the Acromantulas scuttling in the hollow below. He'd left Luster and Fang elsewhere, as Fang was too skittish for this. The qilin was taking the dog for a walk nearby.

The spiders ranged from juveniles to adults—plenty of them. Hagrid released Aragog years ago, didn't he? And got him a mate. No wonder they've multiplied like this. Talk about prolific.

As Lucien observed, a raspy, ancient voice broke the silence. "Well, well, it's been a while since I've seen such a young wizard."

Lucien turned toward the sound. From a dark cave emerged a massive Acromantula, the size of an elephant, its body a pale gray. Unlike the others' black eyes, its eight were a milky white.

Aragog. It had sensed him.

Blind, but its other senses are sharper? Maybe heightened hearing, smell, or touch—or something else entirely. The Disillusionment Charm and Invisibility Essence have their limits. Maybe I should work on new concealment spells…

Lucien dropped his disguise. The surrounding spiders noticed him but didn't attack right away. They seemed to sense his affinity, reluctant to harm him. But when Aragog clicked its mandibles, they slowly began to encircle him.

"You've got a peculiar aura," Aragog's gravelly voice said. "Makes me not want to hurt you."

Lucien scanned the approaching spiders, then met Aragog's gaze calmly. "Hello, Aragog."

"Heh, you know my name. A friend of Hagrid's, then?" Aragog paused, then continued, "Friends… can't hurt friends. But Hagrid's friend doesn't mean my friend."

Despite its blindness, Aragog's milky eyes fixed on Lucien, as if sizing up a juicy piece of meat.

As the spiders closed in, Lucien's lips curved into a relaxed smile. Sparks of electricity crackled at the tip of his wand, snapping through the air. In an instant, Luster appeared at his side, crimson-gold flames flaring, radiating searing heat.

"Thanks for clearing that up," Lucien said lightly. "Now I don't have to hold back."
