"Ma'am, if you're here to see someone, I'll need to…"

"To do what?" Cassandra interrupted pleasantly, turning her head just enough to look at him over the rim of her black spectacles. "Escort me out? Or call someone more qualified?"

The employee shut her eyes.

Behind her, several employees had already slowed, drawn by the commotion. A few whispered under their breath, eyes flicking between them.

Cassandra's gaze swept the lobby, as though she were inspecting furniture she did not remember buying.

"The audacity of this renovation! When I was last here, this lobby had dignity. This floor used to shine,'" she said. "Victoria insisted on it. Now, it looks like a hospital waiting room. All this steel and glass! I suppose Noah thinks this is 'modern." She made sure to lay emphasis on Noah's name.

"He spent a fortune, I'm sure, tearing out tradition just to install a glorified fishbowl!"
