Finlay could hardly believe how Elizabeth had saved Cassius. "If her medical skills were enough to save you, then why wait three years?"
"I opened my eyes and saw her," Cassius replied. "She admitted it herself, she saved me."
Well, if he saw it with his own eyes, then it must be true.
Finlay ran a hand through his hair, feeling anxious for him. "Bro, you're in a bit of a pickle now. You've got a lifesaver and a wife to think about. What about Naya, the one you actually like? Are you still going to chase after her?"
Samuel had been quietly holding a cigarette, the ashes burning down to nothing.
As he listened to the two of them talk, he simply cast a calm glance at Cassius, his thoughts drifting toward Nevaeh without saying a word.
Cassius's gaze was sharp and steady, showing no sign of doubt. "The only woman for me… is her"
Upon hearing this, Finlay sighed. "Bro, you don't know. During those three years you were down, Samuel and I searched everywhere, but we couldn't find a single trace. Honestly, I think your wife is amazing, so maybe you should just... "
Before he could finish, Cassius shot him a glare as sharp as a blade. Finlay quickly shut his mouth and made a zipping motion.
Then, Cassius turned to Samuel. "Have we searched all of Big Bull Village?"
"Mm." Samuel's voice was clear and calm, almost melodious. "There isn't a girl named Naya in the whole village."
Cassius's expression darkened. How could that be?
The place where he had the accident was clearly behind the mountain in Big Bull Village.
That girl, carrying a bamboo basket, had saved his life and dragged him into a cave.
It was there that they shared that unforgettable night. At the time, he had been framed and had fallen ill, unable to control himself.
But when he woke up the next morning, the girl was gone.
He drove around the entire village and even searched through Dayong County, but there was no trace of her.
He hadn't given up. He was preparing to widen his search when he got into a car accident on the way back.
Just as Cassius sank deeper into his thoughts, Samuel's voice cut through. "We have news about the car that hit you back then."
"Who?" Cassius's voice turned icy, sharp as a knife.
"The Dark Magic Organization."
The Dark Magic Organization was ruthless and only cared about money.
Still, even they couldn't erase all traces. As long as there was a lead, evidence would eventually surface, it was just a matter of time.
"Look into one more thing," Cassius said firmly. Since he had promised to cooperate with her, he would follow through. "Investigate Nevaeh's car accident, find out if it was really an accident, or if someone was behind it."
After their talk, Cassius returned alone to the hospital ward.
The old man looked at him, his voice stern as he warned, "You better treat Nevaeh well. If you dare bully her, I won't let you off easily."
Cassius didn't reply.
But Nevaeh stepped forward and linked her arm with his. "Grandpa, he treats me really well."
"That's good to hear." The old man's voice softened slightly. "Now that you're awake, once I'm discharged, we should hold a party to celebrate and let everyone meet Nevaeh."
As they left the ward, Nevaeh instinctively pulled her hand away, her smile fading.
If it weren't for grandpa saying all that, she wouldn't have acted so friendly.
Cassius noticed how she avoided him like he was poison, and his expression darkened.
"Where are you going?"
"I'll be fine on my own."
She actually rejected him.
If it weren't for her visiting his grandfather, he wouldn't have even bothered asking.
After leaving the hospital, Nevaeh headed straight to the pharmacy.
Since she chose to stay, she had to focus on work.
As she boarded the bus, her phone rang before she even reached the pharmacy.
Seeing it was her best friend calling, Nevaeh quickly picked up.
"Nevaeh, I'm outside your pharmacy. Aren't you coming to work today?"
"I'll be there in a minute."
Five minutes later, Nevaeh met her friend Nancy outside the pharmacy, and the two went to a nearby bubble tea shop.
"Nevaeh, I just found out… your grandma passed away."
Nancy squeezed Nevaeh's hand. They had grown up together and knew each other inside out.
She knew Nevaeh's grandma had been her only family, and her eyes softened with sympathy. "What are you going to do now? The Huck family will definitely bully you. Why don't you move in with me?"
Nevaeh sighed and decided to be honest. "Nancy… I… I got married."
"What?!" Nancy exclaimed, completely shocked. "You mean Cyrille is marrying you?"
"No, not him," Nevaeh said, her voice heavy. "It's his brother."
Nancy froze, stunned. "Wait, how did you end up with his brother?"
"It's a long story," Nevaeh said quietly, not wanting to explain too much. "Cyrille is with Noreen now."
"That jerk! I knew he couldn't be trusted." Nancy slammed her hand on the table, fuming. "But don't worry, Nevaeh. Out with the old, in with the new. At least his brother has better taste. You'll definitely be happy in the future."
Nevaeh felt awkward.
Her marriage with Cassius was just a deal.
Once they found out who was behind her grandmother's death, they would divorce. Where was the happiness in that?
Not wanting to linger on the topic, Nevaeh quickly changed the subject. "So, what brings you here? Aren't you supposed to be in class today?"
As soon as Nevaeh asked, Nancy remembered why she came. "Nevaeh, I have amazing news! Our school is holding the Challenge Cup for Medical Technology Innovation. It's open to students and even the public. If you make it to the top three, you can skip the entrance exam and go straight into the school!"
Nevaeh's eyes instantly lit up.
She had been learning medicine from her grandmother since she was a child, and her biggest dream was to become a doctor.
After she finished her college entrance exams at 18, she went up the mountain to gather herbs.
On her way back, she found an injured man and rushed to help him.
She never expected that he had been drugged, and in that moment, they ended up in a compromising situation.
When she woke up, he was already gone, leaving behind only a note: "Naya, wait for me. I'll come back to marry you."
She waited and waited… but that promise never came.
A month later, she received her acceptance letter from medical school.
Just as she was filled with excitement about finally becoming a doctor, she discovered she was pregnant…
"Nevaeh… Naya! Naya!" Nancy called, noticing how she had zoned out. Switching to her nickname, she frowned. "Are you thinking about that jerk again? That scumbag who ruined your chance to study? Stop thinking about him! Look at you now. Your medical skills are already amazing. With this competition, if you place well, you can still get into college and chase your dream."
Nevaeh nodded, taking her friend's words seriously. "Okay. I'll prepare well."
After parting ways with Nancy, she headed back to the pharmacy.
For the past three years, she had been working there.
Even though her salary was only around $450 a month, she could still send money back to support her grandmother, and that made her happy.
Plus, during quiet hours, she loved researching different herbs and their effects.
"Manager, I'm here for my shift," Nevaeh said as she slipped into her work uniform and walked to the counter.
The manager gave her a cold look. "Nevaeh, you asked for three days off. Why are you late today?"
"I'm sorry, I'll be more careful next time," Nevaeh replied softly.
"This month's bonus is gone. Go clean the restroom and the herbal preparation room thoroughly."
Nevaeh had faced this kind of treatment before. The manager may have been petty, but since she controlled the wages, Nevaeh chose not to argue.
After finishing up in the herbal preparation room, Nevaeh moved on to the restroom, pulling on her gloves. Just then, a mocking voice rang out from behind her.
"Oh, Nevaeh, I thought you loved studying herbs. Why are you scrubbing toilets today? Come on, let me take a picture and post it on social media. Don't look so sour! You've been frowning all day. What's the matter? Did someone in your family die?""
