Day 1I thought it was a dream school. The gates were huge, the hallways polished like mirrors. Everyone smiled too much, but that's Japan for you, right? Then I sat down at a desk. Cards slid across the table. Nobody explained the rules. They didn't need to. My hands moved before I knew it.
I won the first game. The desk beside me emptied. The boy just stood, silent, staring at me like I'd stolen his skin.
Day 3I understand now.You don't buy lunch here. You bet for it.You don't ask for respect. You bet for it.The teachers smile like croupiers in suits. The whole place breathes in wagers and exhales losers.
A girl bet her voice today. She whispered her stake, then screamed when she lost. Now her mouth moves without sound. Everyone clapped politely.
Day 6I tried not to play. Tried to walk away. The floor stretched longer with every step.Doors led back to the same classroom. One of the students leaned close, her pupils dilated so wide I could see myself reflected."Every breath is a bet," she said.I sat down. I couldn't stop.
Day 10I lost my memories of home.I can't remember my mother's face. But I won the round. And when I won, it felt good. Too good. Like winning mattered more than anything else. More than the ache in my chest, more than the holes opening in my mind.
There's a thrill here that nothing else in the world could compare to. Maybe this is what love feels like.
Day 15The hierarchy is real. Cards are crowns. Chips are weapons. The winners smile too brightly, and the losers crawl. The losers always crawl. I've started smiling like them. It feels glued to my face.
Sometimes I see the walls ripple, like the whole school is laughing.
Final EntryI put it all on the table today. My name. My body. My everything. And I lost.
But it doesn't matter. The girl across from me leaned forward and whispered:
"Now you're part of the school."
The bell rang. Everyone stood. Chairs scraped across the floor in perfect unison.I stood with them.I smiled.I don't remember what my name was before, but it doesn't matter.
The next game is about to begin.
