Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

Chapter 20

Rohan heard the gun click and knew his magazine was empty. He had learned how to reload the gun, but he wasn't any good in it and knew that the satyr would manage to run away. Rohan dropped the gun out of his hands as he started to sprint after the satyr.

The satyr would be too fast for Rohan to keep up to. Taking his handgun Rohan steadily aimed it at the satyr as he pulled the trigger and felt the gun push back in his hand.

He missed, the satyr got further away. 'Aim lower' he said to himself. This time he shot again, aiming for the middle of the satyrs back. Pulling the trigger he saw the bullet fly for a split second… and then the satyr fell forward. He had managed to hit it, but it didn't kill the satyr.

It got back up again on his legs as it stumbled forwards slowly. Rohan shot at the satyrs head, but missed again, he couldn't finish it from this distance. The satyr had managed to get a couple hundred meters away from Rohan in such a short time.

Rohan started running toward the satyr, who was starting to get up again. He quickly looked back and saw Britta and Ragnar still further away.

When Rohan got to the satyr it was laying on its back and coughing up blood. It opened its eyes when Rohan got closer, but he couldn't read the emotion in the satyr's eyes. Rohan took his sword out and look again at the satyr. Rohan wasn't sure if he was imagining it but is looked like the satyr was smiling. Rohan plunged the sword in the satyr's head, killing it on the spot and putting it out of its misery.

[You have slain Satyr]

[Experience earned]

[Level increased]

Rohan saw the light go out in the satyr's dark brown eyes, it had something human yet still so different. It had the torso and arms of a human but the head of a goat, and its horns were on the smaller side.

It took a couple of minutes before Britta and Ragnar caught up so he started walking back.

"Didn't really need us to do anything huh?" Britta looked mad and happy at the same time. "leave some fun for the rest of us." Ragnar said as he put his hand on Rohan's shoulder and looked very proud at Rohan while still wearing that cheeky smirk.

"He didn't sound the alarm it seems." Britta looked questioningly at Rohan

"No he kept silent all the way" Rohan wasn't sure if he needed to discuss the emotion on the satyr's face but he felt that he might have imagined it.

"Could be on purpose or maybe he just couldn't, lets leave it at that and wait for the rest to catch up."

Fiora, Jan and Leslie caught up to them quickly. They had to move away from the bridge quickly in case any satyrs or enemies would investigate.

They had now managed to reach in outskirts of the inner city, which had taken them close to a full day, and would take even longer to get close to Duran's cross.

Fiora's team kept going for a couple more hours before calling it a day at a flat on the corner, allowing for vision over at least one crossing. They did come across more satyrs, but these were more organized and in larger numbers than before. So, it wasn't smart to engage them.

The flat had a small convenience store and some hostel beds which would be perfect for spending the night. Rohan would take watch first switch out after a bit more than an hour. He took out his binoculars to check out the roads and crossing below the flat.

It wasn't a busy road at all now, but before the seismic flash it would be crawling with cars, people, bikes and everything around it. Now he would occasionally see a group of satyrs cross the streets, or sometimes even a straggler looking for a place to sleep or get food.

Getting up early in the morning, they left the flat and went out on the road again. They would move a couple kilometers more inwards to Duran's cross and then set up a temporary base in a skyscraper. Jan used to work there and still had access to many parts of the building.

From that point they would be able to make quick scouts in the area and be able to escape quickly. The skyscraper was called Emerald's view, named after the ore the company delt with and the color of the skyscraper itself… bright green. It was one of the ugliest buildings in Duran, but in that sense, it also stood out the most. It was one of the most outer laying skyscrapers and would give a good view of outer Duran, but not on the innermost part of the city.

After half a day they managed to reach Emerald's view. They didn't have to fight any groups of satyrs on the way to the skyscraper as Leslie managed to take some more hidden routes or evade the patrolling groups.

A different problem that would start happening soon was that they only had a limited amount of mags for the guns, Rohan had already used up one and still had 3 remaining. But even then it was important to not waste any.

They quickly entered Emerald's view and went up to the 47th floor, the highest Jan could access. They could also break down a door, but that might initiate a safety protocol and shut down the doors. This place allowed just enough view over the outer city, and down the streets in inner city.

Their next plan of action was to take down satyr's to level up and scout out closer to Duran's cross. Rohan left the building with Britta and Leslie, while Jan covered them from the building. Fiora and Ragnar looted some stores for supplies.
