The cavern stretched further than I had imagined.
Shadows clung to every nook and crevice, thick and heavy, like the darkness itself had weight.
Every sound, every vibration, every whisper of air reached me with perfect clarity. My senses tingled in ways a human body could never manage.
Then it hit me.
A low rumble echoed from deep within the tunnels—a growl that carried intelligence, malice, and raw power. Not a wolf, not a goblin. Something bigger, something older.
I smiled—or at least the mental equivalent of smiling.
"Hungry, are we?"
I murmured. My shadow shifted, coiling around me, forming a tall, humanoid silhouette.
"Then let us feast."
The predator appeared through a fissure in the stone. Crimson eyes burned with fire, jagged scales rippled with every movement, and twisted horns curled toward the ceiling. Its claws rended the stone as it advanced.
This was no simple dungeon beast. This was a challenge worthy of the Shadow Sovereign.
It lunged. Flames scorched the cavern walls. I dissolved, flowing like smoke, letting its claws swipe through empty air. Its roars vibrated my very being.
…And I learned something wonderful: I was stronger than fear.
My shadows thickened into armor, my tendrils forming blades that cut stone as easily as air. Every strike, every dodge, every ripple of its strength was absorbed into me, weaving itself into my form.

[Ability Acquired: Shadow Form Mastery]
I was no longer a mindless blob. No longer a simple predator. Every devoured essence honed me into something new, sharper, faster, smarter.
And yet… part of me couldn't help noticing the ridiculous side of it.
"Imagine explaining this to HR,"
I thought.
"Yeah, sorry boss, got promoted to demon king today. Casual lunch?"
The creature slammed against me, claws scraping stone, fire licking around my shadow tendrils. I flowed, dissolved, reformed—half-shadow, half-humanoid, a nightmare of darkness. With one final strike, I enveloped it completely. Heat, instinct, intelligence, raw power—everything poured into me.
When it fell, nothing remained. Only silence and the faint smell of burnt stone.
I drifted to the pool at the cavern's center, watching my reflection. No longer just a faceless shadow. A humanoid figure stood tall, radiating presence, dominance, inevitability.
"…Huh,"
I said softly.
"Guess I'm getting the hang of this."
Even so, I couldn't resist the little… guilty amusement.
"If some poor adventurer girl saw this, she'd probably faint. Or scream. Maybe both. And yet… I kinda get it. Looking at myself like this… I'd faint too."
Power alone wasn't enough. Fear, strategy, and mystery would be my weapons. The world would never see the Nameless Shadow King coming. And when it did… it would already be too late.
"I am no longer Sora Kurogane,"
I whispered to the cavern.
"I am the Shadow Sovereign. And this… is only the beginning."
The shadows around me shimmered, solidifying into shapes of claws and blades. I flexed my "arms," testing their reach. Already I could feel the hunger growing—not just for food, but for evolution. For more. Always more.
The predator was gone, devoured and folded into me, and yet I felt it calling from somewhere deep in the stone. Another hunt, another challenge, another piece of the world to conquer.
A chuckle rolled from my faceless mouth.
"Bring it on. I'm just getting started."
