"The system Merlin created may be safer than demonic magic in some ways, but it offers no protection for idiots. The other magic I used was, as you correctly deduced, Norse rune magic. We can discuss that another time. Today, we focus on the human system."

He coughed, slightly embarrassed by his own enthusiasm for the lecture, and began rummaging through a messy pile of scrolls on his desk.

After a few moments of muttering curses like "to the angels with it" and "where is that troll-dung," he triumphantly pulled out a two-meter-long scroll that had fallen behind the desk.

With a flick of his wrist, a coat rack flew to his hand. He hung the scroll from it, and it unrolled to the floor, revealing a dizzying array of diagrams, symbols, and tables.

"As you noticed, young master, human magic often involves duplicated elements within the circle. This is due to various magical laws and dependencies. But before we can study those, we must first learn the elements themselves. So, take your quill and begin…"

I picked up the quill, which was enchanted with a seemingly endless supply of ink, and thought wistfully of the brushes I used to use for calligraphy and spell scrolls.

Then, I began to absorb the new knowledge, making a mental note to craft a proper brush for myself in the future.

"Young master, here is what you requested."

A guard, trying to hide his nervousness, handed me several sheets of paper covered in messy handwriting.

I had made sure this corner of the park was deserted. I took the pages and quickly committed the information to memory.

Three minutes later, a small burst of magic fire turned the papers to ash.

"Good work, Zerkel," I said with a cool smile. "I will see to it that one of the captain's deputies is promptly relieved of his duties. Drunkenness on duty is a serious offense. A loyal and capable guard such as yourself deserves his place. Though I may not be the heir, I still have the power to restore proper order."

"My loyalty and my sword are yours forever, young master," the demon declared, dropping to one knee.

Greed and ambition. They are forces that can lift the lowly to great heights, and bring the great to a traitor's end. As long as it serves my purpose, I will use them.

"You may return to your duties," I told him. "And forget what you have seen and transcribed. Without the proper power and status, this knowledge will only bring you harm."

"It will be done, young master."

With a flash of excitement in his eyes, the guard bowed and hurried away. I watched him go, a cold glint in my own eyes. I made a mental note to dispose of this unreliable traitor in a decade or so.

For now, I focused on the information he had provided, transcribed from our father's personal archives. Rofocale had been moving his records, which had given Zerkel a brief opportunity to secretly copy a few documents.

He had gotten demonically lucky. He had stumbled upon recent celestial observations. According to the reports, the creator of the Biblical Mythology, the Lord of the Seven Heavens, God himself, was either incapacitated… or dead.

I would not take this information as gospel, of course, but it did shed some light on the current political climate, and the Satan descendants' eagerness to restart the war with Heaven.

Revenge? A power grab? Some other, unknown factor? It didn't matter for now.

The key takeaway is this: God, one of the main stabilizing figures in the Biblical mythology, is either dead or incapacitated.

News of this could galvanize the demons to restart the Great War, and it could also tempt other mythologies, like the Greek and Norse pantheons, to attack.

The angels and demons, for all their infighting, have carved out significant territory and power for themselves over the millennia.

They've wiped out a few smaller pantheons and skirmished with nearly every other major mythology, which is how the Christian God gathered the resources to create the Sacred Gears in the first place.

Right now, the other factions are hesitant to make a move, wary of the Sacred Gears created from the two Heavenly Dragon Emperors.

But without God, all that posturing and saber-rattling becomes meaningless. Which means I need to prepare.

But first, I need to deal with the impending civil war in the Underworld. My two biggest problems are the short-sighted descendants of the Great Satans and Sirzechs Gremory.

The former refuse to adapt to the new reality, and the latter, with his power and his ideals, is a direct threat to my plans for my mother's ascension.

The current Lucifer heir is a recluse, Zeoticus Gremory is more interested in playing the puppet master from the shadows, and the strongest heirs of the Astaroth, Glasya-Labolas, and Sitri houses lack the leadership qualities to be a real threat.

A few well-placed reforms could probably bring them in line. If I play my cards right during the civil war, I can eliminate my two main obstacles and place my mother on her rightful throne.

And what place is more fitting for her in Hell than the throne of Lucifer himself?

….

Two years later:-

A longsword, wreathed in green demonic aura, whistled through the air, aimed at the black-haired boy's head.

He ducked under the attack and tried to touch the blade with his own crimson-cloaked hand, but a pulse of green energy erupted from the sword, throwing him back.

"Young master," the guard captain said, a hint of a smirk on his face, "the same trick won't work on me twice."

"A pity," Inflis replied, dusting himself off. He casually spun a short spear in his other hand. "You looked so amusing when your sword vanished from your hand. I wanted to immortalize the moment on canvas."

The corner of Captain Ansted's mouth twitched as he recalled the embarrassing moment from one of their many spars.

What could be more shameful for an experienced swordsman than losing his weapon in a fight?
