The young demon did not seem worried at all. He raised his spear, and a thick, dark crimson energy wrapped around his body like a protective blanket.

Levelin, the magic tutor, had already done the math in his head. He knew how much energy his opponent would need to block the attack.

He knew how much damage the boy would likely take. He was already planning his next spells, ready to end this practice fight.

But then, the information coming from his magic staff changed. His eyes went wide with surprise.

In an instant, he pulled up thick walls of stone from the ground and threw up several more layers of magical shields in front of him.

Where the young Lucifuge had been standing, a spinning pillar of water suddenly appeared. It shot forward like a giant spear, moving with incredible speed.

It smashed through the fire spell, which had been made stronger by the wind. It tore through the stone walls as if they were made of paper.

It carved a long, deep trench in the training ground, which quickly filled with water.

Levelin looked to the side at the deep cut in the earth. The powerful water spell had been aimed right at him. His angled shields and stone walls had been just enough to push it to the side.

A wide, interested smile spread across his face. A spark of excitement, a feeling he hadn't felt in a long, long time, flared up in his chest.

Maybe, he thought, these practice fights with the young Lucifuge wouldn't be so boring after all.

….

"I SURRENDER!" I shouted.

I was stuck. A big lump of mud had hardened around my body like stone. I tried to wiggle, but it was no use. I was completely out of energy.

I couldn't even use my special "theft" power to free myself.

A moment later, the magic holding the mud together faded away, and it turned back into a gloopy mess.

I used the last bit of my spiritual energy—my demonic power was almost completely gone—to push the heavy mud off me. I jumped to my feet. I was covered from head to toe in brown slime.

The worst part was that my magic tutor had literally used me to mop the floor. I wondered what those hypocrites from the righteous sects would give to see the great Mad Ravager rolling around in the mud. The thought made me snort.

I looked up at the red-haired demon. He was walking toward me, casually using his magic to fix the torn-up training ground.

He had his usual friendly smile on his face, but I could see little sparks of fun dancing in his golden eyes.

He was happy that he had gotten to "wipe the floor with the young master." I would remember that. And I would get him back for it later.

The red-haired man's smile faded a little when he saw me squinting at him, but he quickly put his friendly face back on.

"That was an interesting fight, young master," he said. "But can you tell me how you were able to use water magic so often? From my calculations, you should have used up half of your power at the start of the fight with that one spell…"

"The Rushing Blade of the Maelstrom," I corrected him.

"Ahem… with that one water spell," he said, coughing into his hand. He seemed embarrassed by the name I had given my spell.

"If I didn't know your family, I would have thought you were a child from the House of Leviathan. They can turn their demonic energy into tons of water in an instant."

"You have already figured it out, Tutor," I said, "but I will tell you my little secret. You know about my family's special power. I can store different things in my aura, including liquids. I don't need a bottle or a container. I simply had a large amount of water stored away, filled with my demonic power. During the fight, I let it out and used my magic to guide it."

"A 'small' amount…" Levelin muttered. His lip twitched as he looked around the training ground. It was now a swamp, full of craters and trenches filled with water.

While he was distracted, I took a moment to catch my breath and secretly put my spear back into the storage space inside my aura. He didn't need to know how I had made it.

The Dancing Shadow of the Devil of Doom was not a normal spear. It wasn't made from wood or metal.

It was made from bone, flesh, and blood. I had taken tons of flesh and bone and used special alchemy rituals to purify them, concentrating all of their power into a smaller and smaller shape.

Then, I fed it with my own blood, making it a perfect channel for my power, a weapon that only I could use.

"Tutor," I said, changing the subject, "what did you think of the fight?"

"You are still not used to using magic in battle," he said simply.

I raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to explain.

"No, you are learning magic at an amazing speed," he said. "But you only use your spells to distract or confuse your enemy. You still rely on your demonic aura and your own body and weapon. When I started attacking you more seriously, you completely stopped using magic. And when you did try to attack with a spell, it left a big opening in your defense. What is magic to you?"

I knew a long, boring lecture was coming, but I answered his question anyway.

"It is a tool."

"It should be a part of you," he said, his eyes lighting up. "It should be like another arm or leg. A tool has a set purpose, and that limits how we can use it. But magic is limitless. We demons are born with a talent for it. The only things that limit us are our own imaginations and our laziness…"

As he went on and on, I thought about the fight. He was right. I had been completely defeated. I was too used to fighting with my old powers.

It was easy to plan a fight against a stupid monster using a few spells. But when those plans fell apart against a stronger enemy, I forgot all about magic and went back to my old habits.

I would have to break myself down and rebuild again, learning from this new world. The fact that I had run out of energy so quickly was disappoint…

Wait.

I slowly started to realize something. I compared the red-haired demon's energy before and after the fight.

He had used dozens of powerful spells, but he had barely used any of his own demonic power.

His power level was only about twice as high as mine, but I was completely empty, and he was still nearly full. It didn't make any sense, unless…

He wasn't using his own power. He was using the magic that was already in the air all around us.

He was creating the basic shape of the spell with his own energy, and then pulling in the free-floating power from the environment to make it strong.

It was an amazing, almost stingy level of control. It made me feel a spark of admiration, and a strong desire to learn how to do it myself, and then do it even better.

Levelin, who had been walking a little ahead of me, suddenly shivered and looked back at me with a worried look on his face.
