Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Evolution of Carvanha

"Silas, you make the first move," Roxanne said, tucking a strand of hair neatly behind her ear.

The referee signaled. Geodude vs. Carvanha.

"Carvanha, Focus Energy!" Silas commanded.

"Car-vaaaanhaaa!!"

The piranha Pokémon's body glowed faintly, its muscles tightening as its eyes sharpened with focus.

"Geodude, Defense Curl," Roxanne said softly.

"Geo…dude!"

The rock Pokémon curled into a ball, its body glinting as a white sheen coated its stony surface.

"Don't let it get comfortable! Carvanha, Aqua Jet!" Silas ordered sharply.

"Carvaaaanhaaa!"

Carvanha darted forward like a living torpedo, water spiraling around its body. It slammed into Geodude mid-preparation, sending the rock Pokémon skidding backward across the field before it could finish reinforcing itself.

"Geodude, Rollout!" Roxanne countered quickly.

"Geo-dude!!"

Geodude spun into a rock ball, rolling with accelerating speed across the arena.

"Carvanha, Psychic Fangs! Follow with Ice Fang!" Silas barked.

Carvanha lunged with glowing fangs, snapping hard — "Crunchh!" — then its teeth crackled with frost, slamming against the rolling stone.

But Geodude's momentum was building. The Rollout's spinning force deflected most of the bites, its rotation growing faster and heavier with each pass.

'Tch… Rollout's power stacks the longer it continues…' Silas thought grimly.

"Geodude, Rock Polish!" Roxanne called, her voice steady.

The rolling rock gleamed, its surface grinding smoothly as its speed surged even higher.

Silas's eyes widened. Not good! Rollout plus Rock Polish will make it unstoppable!

"Carvanha, Screech — disrupt it now!"

"CAARR-VAAAANHAAA!!"

The piercing shriek echoed painfully.

"Geo…!!"

Geodude clutched its head mid-spin, stopping in its tracks.

"Now! Aqua Jet - full power!" Silas roared.

"Car-VAANNHAAAA!!!"

Carvanha shot forward, water enveloping its body, acceleration ability pushing it to its very limit. Like a rocket, it slammed into Geodude with explosive force.

BOOM!

Geodude was blasted across the battlefield, slammed hard against the wall. Its eyes swirled into spirals as it fainted instantly.

The referee raised his flag. "Geodude is unable to battle! Round One goes to the challenger, Silas!"

Gasps rippled through the watching students.

"No way… Teacher Roxanne actually lost?"

"He must be cheating!"

"Or maybe she's going easy on him…"

"Even Rock Polish + Rollout got cracked?!"

For them, Roxanne was more than just a Gym Leader - she was a symbol, their mentor and role model. To see her defeated shook their faith.

But on the battlefield, Silas's Carvanha panted heavily. Its body trembled, energy overflowing.

"Car…vaaaaanhaaa…"

White light engulfed it.

"The light of evolution?!" someone shouted.

Students who had been jeering fell silent, eyes widening in disbelief. Even Felton-Phoebe's younger brother, who had mocked Silas earlier - froze in place.

The light burst apart.

"SHAAAAAAA!!"

A massive shark head emerged, body sleek and torpedo-like, fins slicing through the air. Its eyes gleamed with primal ferocity.

Beep! Beep!!

"SHAAA-PEDOOO!!" the newly evolved Pokémon roared, fangs glinting dangerously.

Silas exhaled, smiling. "Well done, Sharpedo."

He quickly recalled it, the Pokédex flashing data across the screen. Level 30. Evolution complete.

Roxanne smiled warmly, though a faint blush touched her cheeks. "Congratulations, Silas. Your Carvanha has become a Sharpedo."

"Thank you, Gym Leader Roxanne. Your guidance helped push us this far," Silas said with a respectful bow.

Roxanne's heart skipped for a moment at his formal tone. Few challengers ever treated her with such respect.

She steadied herself and lifted another Poké Ball. "It's my duty as a Gym Leader. Now, let's continue. Go-Nosepass!"

"NOOOOSE-PASS!!!"

A red flash revealed the Compass Pokémon, its stone-like body looming in the center of the field.

Silas narrowed his eyes. "As expected…"

The crowd stirred with excitement.

"It's Teacher Roxanne's signature Pokémon!"

"But why Nosepass? Why not her ace, Probopass?"

"Yeah… Nosepass's level seems too low for a Gym Leader's main team."

Of course, the students didn't realize this was a Gym challenge match, not a serious League-level battle.

Roxanne smiled softly, raising her hand. "Your turn, Silas. Which Pokémon will you choose?"
