Isla's POV
The woods blurred around me and my lungs screamed for air. Behind me, the hunters cursed, their boots heavy and loud, and they weren't giving up.
"She's bleeding; keep on her!" one yelled.
I stumbled down a hill and my ankle twisted, but I kept going. I crashed into a stream and cold water bit at my skin and took my breath away, but I pushed in and crouched low as it rushed past me. Blood mixed into the water and drifted away downstream.
"They'll lose the trail," Ava whispered and she sounded tired.
I shoved forward and followed the current and my knees were shaking and my head was pounding. The cold water numbed my shoulder, but I could still feel blood flowing.
Branches cracked behind me. "She's here somewhere!"
A gun fired and the shot ripped through the dark. Something hot tore across my other arm and I cried out and fell against the rocks. Water rushed over my face and I choked.
"Up," Ava snarled. "Don't stop."
