Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9 ( Splitting In The Dark)

Meanwhile, Anna, Luka, and Louis were walking through the jungle.

Anna and Luka were tired, but they stayed silent after Louis's sudden outburst earlier.

"I think it's best if we split up," Louis suggested.

Anna and Luka's faces turned pale. Luka immediately shouted:

"You said earlier that if we don't complain, we'll stay together!"

"Yes, I'm scared and I don't want to be alone," Anna muttered.

"Well, if we stick together, we'll never find anyone. We'll just keep walking forever without a clue," Louis replied.

"Like I said, if we split up, we might lose each other too, you know," Luka growled at him.

"Please, Louis, I don't want to be alone in this jungle," Anna whispered nervously.

Louis sighed, realizing they would never agree to split.

"So then—" before he could finish, they heard footsteps from the bushes, approaching.

Anna quickly hid behind Luka, her heart pounding. Luka froze, startled, but Louis stayed calm.

"Don't be scared. I think it's one of our friends," Louis said.

"Or maybe a wild animal," Luka muttered.

The footsteps grew louder, closer… until finally, a figure stepped out from the shadows.

Meanwhile, the other four—Louis, Luna, Lisa, and John—were chasing the sound of Max's voice.

They had been running for almost five minutes, yet there was still no sign of him.

"Is it really his voice, or just some kind of speaker?" Luna asked.

"What are you talking about?" Louis frowned.

"Well, we've been following that voice for ten minutes, and there's no Max anywhere," Luna said irritably.

"I agree with Luna," Lisa added. "It always sounds so close, but when we run… there's nothing."

"Well, what do we—" before John could finish, Luna interrupted.

"Guys! I heard him again—it's coming from over there!" she said, pointing toward the right side of the forest.

"You sure?" John asked.

"Yes, I'm sure," Luna replied firmly.

"Then let's follow it."

The group immediately ran in the direction of the voice.

At the same time, another four—Luna, Max, Lisa, and John—were chasing Louis's voice.

They had been running through the jungle, desperate to find him.

"I can't find him anywhere," Luna muttered.

"Where is his voice coming from?" Lisa asked, frustrated.

"I think we're close. I just heard him again," John said.

"Then we have to keep running! Maybe this time we'll actually find him," Max urged.

"I hope so," Lisa whispered.

The group quickened their pace, running faster toward the sound.

Back with Anna, Luka, and Louis—the shadowy figure stepped into view.

It was Max.

"Max! You're okay!" Anna said, stepping out from behind Luka, her voice full of relief.

"Louis, thank God you're safe! But Anna, Luka—what are you two doing here? I thought you were waiting in the van," Max said.

"We were, but Anna forced me to come look for you guys," Luka said annoyingly.

"You're alone, Max? No one else with you?" Louis asked.

"No, I haven't found anyone yet. Only you three," Max replied.

"I'm worried about the others. We need to find them before something happens," Anna said anxiously.

"Yeah, let's go," Louis agreed.

Together, the four started walking deeper into the jungle.

On the other side, Louis, Lisa, John, and Luna who are searching for Max suddenly stopped.

Not because they were tired—something else made them freeze.

A blinding light.

It burst out of nowhere, so bright it illuminated the entire ground beneath them. The light was overwhelming—so intense they had to cover their faces. Nobody could see a thing.

Nobody… except Luna.

As she shielded her face, her eyes accidentally caught something on the ground.

Her face went pale. Her whole body trembled.

She wished she had never seen it.

Meanwhile, the other four—Luna, Max, Lisa, and John—were still running in search of Louis.

"Where the hell is he?" Luna said, frustrated.

"We have—" Max began, but Lisa cut him off.

"Wait… did you guys hear that?"

"We heard Louis earlier, but not since then," John replied.

"No, I mean right now. Everyone be quiet and listen carefully," Lisa instructed.

The group went silent.

And then they heard it—faint, but unmistakable. Someone was crying.

"I heard it too… but who's crying?" Luna asked, uneasy.

"The voice is so faint, I can't even tell," Lisa added.

"Let's follow it. Who knows—it might be Louis," John said.

"Why do you think it's Louis?" Max asked skeptically.

"I don't know. Maybe he's scared, maybe he broke down. We have to check," John replied.

"Louis isn't like that," Luna said softly. "But maybe you're right… let's go."

The group nodded, then began running toward the sound of the crying.

Meanwhile, Anna, Luka, Louis, and Max continued walking through the dark forest.

"Guys… I think now's the right time to split up," Louis said suddenly.

"What?! I thought we were done with this idea!" Anna said, horrified.

"I'm not agreeing with this," Luka growled.

"I think it's better if we split," Max said quietly.

Anna and Luka stared at him in disbelief.

Max quickly defended himself. "I mean… if we split, we'll cover more ground. If we stick together, we'll never find anyone."

"Exactly what I've been saying," Louis added.

"But I don't want to be alone," Anna said, her voice breaking.

"Okay, how about this—we split into pairs," Louis suggested.

"Right. That way, nobody's alone," Max agreed.

"I guess that's fine… but I don't want to be stuck with her," Luka said, glaring at Anna.

"What's wrong with me?" Anna snapped.

"You can't stop whining for two seconds, and I don't want to listen to your crying," Luka said bitterly.

"You—!" Anna began, but Louis interrupted.

"Enough! Stop it already."

"Well, I'll take Anna with me," Max said.

"Alright. Then Luka, you're with me," Louis said.

"Fine… but you really think we'll find each other again if we split?" Luka asked.

"Yes. I believe we can," Louis said firmly.

"How can you be so sure?" Anna asked.

"Because I believe in us. We'll find everyone, and we'll escape this place," Louis replied.

"So no plan—just blind faith?" Luka muttered.

"Yes," Louis answered without hesitation.

Luka stared at him in disbelief, but sighed. He knew there was no changing their minds.

The group exchanged tense nods, then finally split into pairs—heading into opposite parts of the jungle.
