The things climbing the lower road did not hurry.
Their footsteps were slow, measured, and heavy enough to travel through the stone beneath Aric's boots.
One set.
Then another.
Then many.
Caelan hung over the shaft with one hand locked around Aric's forearm. The blue light below him climbed the walls in narrow bands, illuminating shapes that moved far beneath the surface.
Selisse stood at the edge of the third ring, knife raised.
Edrin remained bound to the black column.
The construct watched them all through its faceless glow.
"Blood," it said.
Selisse looked at the knife.
Then at Edrin.
"Tell me what happens if I open the lock."
Edrin's eyes were clear for only a moment before the bindings pulled his head back.
"The first lock opens the road."
"What does the road lead to?"
"Below Highglade."
"That is not enough."
"Below the old road."
The construct pulsed.
The blue rings brightened.
Caelan slipped another inch.
Aric tightened his grip.
"Edrin," he said, "what is below the old road?"
Edrin's mouth opened.
The answer came in his own voice.
"The first chamber."
Then the construct spoke through him.
"The first throne."
Selisse's face hardened. "There is no throne in the founding records."
"There are no honest records," Edrin said.
The bindings tightened again.
His voice broke.
Caelan tried to climb.
The shaft beneath him shifted.
A shape moved in the blue light below.
Long limbs.
Multiple joints.
A pale head turned upward.
The System opened.
[Subterranean life-signs approaching.]
[Count: Increasing.]
[Distance to chamber: Decreasing.]
[Threat classification: Unresolved.]
Aric looked toward the gate.
The entities were close enough now that he could hear claws striking stone.
The patrol captain raised her sword.
"We need a decision."
Selisse stared at the knife in her hand.
Aric saw the conflict in her face.
She was not afraid of pain.
She was afraid of giving the chamber what it wanted.
"What does the blood do?" Aric asked.
The construct answered.
"It remembers the door."
"That is not an explanation."
"It opens."
"And after it opens?"
"Choice."
"Whose choice?"
"Yours."
The word felt deliberately chosen.
Aric looked at the black column.
"You said memory."
"Yes."
"You want the fang and my memory."
"The tooth returns. The memory remains."
"What memory?"
The construct turned toward him.
"First blood."
The phrase struck deeper than it should have.
The first kill.
The first time the System had appeared.
The first moment his life had split away from the ordinary world.
Aric did not know whether the construct truly sensed the memory or only understood what could hurt him.
The System responded.
[Mental-intrusion attempt: Targeted.]
[Memory category: Foundational event.]
[Will resistance engaged.]
His mind tightened.
For an instant, he felt the edge of a different absence.
Not the memory itself being erased.
The shape around it being hollowed out.
His mother's kitchen.
The road.
The first System message.
A wolf's eyes in the dark.
The names of the dead.
Aric's focus broke.
Caelan slipped.
"Aric!"
Aric dropped to one knee and wrapped his free arm around Caelan's wrist.
The shaft pulled downward.
The patrol captain moved to help, but the third ring flared and forced her back.
Selisse stepped closer.
"Take my blood."
Aric looked at her.
"No."
"If I do nothing, Caelan falls."
"If you do this without understanding, the gate may open for everything below."
Edrin forced his head upright.
"Selisse."
She turned.
"The blood does not open the vault," he said. "It opens the first lock."
"What is the difference?"
"The vault is already open."
The chamber shook.
Dust fell from the tablet walls.
A crack split one of the pale rings.
The lower road answered with a distant roar.
Not the Hollow Stalker.
Something larger.
The construct's face brightened.
"Delay is ending."
Selisse cut her palm.
The knife flashed once.
A thin line of blood appeared.
Caelan swore.
Aric tightened his hold on him.
Selisse extended her hand over the third ring.
A drop fell.
It struck the blue light.
The chamber went silent.
Then the ring ignited.
Blood did not spread across the floor.
It traveled through the carved lines as though the stone had veins.
The first ring turned red.
The second turned red.
The third remained dark for one breath.
Then it opened.
The shaft beneath Caelan stopped pulling.
Aric hauled him upward.
Caelan rolled onto the stone beside him.
Selisse's blood continued moving toward the black column.
The construct spoke.
"Lock remembered."
Behind the black column, a narrow door appeared.
Not the great gate.
A smaller stone door set into the rear wall.
It bore the Veylin name.
VEYLIN — LAST KEY
Selisse stared at it.
"That was not there."
"It was," Edrin whispered. "The vault hid it."
The bindings around him loosened by a fraction.
Caelan crawled toward his brother.
"Edrin."
"Not yet."
"Let me cut you free."
"Not with steel."
Aric looked at the door.
The System opened.
[Secondary lock identified.]
[Bloodline authorization accepted.]
[Opening condition: Incomplete.]
[Required carrier resonance: Present.]
The phrase made Aric look down at the spearhead in his hand.
The metal had begun to glow faintly.
Not with blue light.
With a darker, warmer hue.
The same warmth he had felt when holding the Dark Wolf Fang.
The construct turned toward him.
"Return the tooth."
"I told you. I don't have it."
"You carry its road."
Aric understood.
The fang had left a trace in him.
Maybe through the System.
Maybe through the blood spilled at the western waystation.
Maybe through something older.
"How do I return something I no longer possess?"
"Open the memory."
The pressure returned.
His first kill.
His first transformation.
The wolf's death.
The fang in his hand.
The darkness beneath the station.
The moment it vanished.
The memory had always felt incomplete.
Now he saw why.
Something had taken the fang from the physical world.
But the event had not ended there.
A thread remained.
A path from his memory into the lower road.
The System flashed.
[Memory-route resonance detected.]
[Stored event contains unresolved transfer.]
[Recovery possibility: Non-zero.]
Aric stared at the message.
The fang might still exist.
Not in his inventory.
Not in the western station.
Somewhere along the route beneath the city.
The construct wanted access to the memory because the memory contained the path.
"You want me to remember where it went."
"Yes."
"And if I do?"
"The lock opens."
"Then the things below reach the city."
"Choice."
Aric looked toward the lower road.
The approaching footsteps had become a continuous vibration.
The patrol captain's voice cut through the chamber.
"Whatever you're going to do, do it now."
Selisse's hand was still bleeding.
She looked at Aric.
"What do you need?"
"Your blood opened the first lock."
"And you?"
"I may have to open the second."
"What does that cost?"
"My memory."
She did not hesitate.
"Then use mine."
Aric looked at her sharply.
The construct's light shifted.
"Blood is not memory."
Selisse stepped closer. "Then take the memory of the first time I heard the footsteps."
Aric felt the chamber react.
The Veylin door shuddered.
The construct turned fully toward her.
"Partial substitute."
"Enough?"
"Perhaps."
Aric understood what she was doing.
The network had already used her as an anchor.
Now she was offering it a memory willingly instead of allowing it to steal one.
The distinction mattered.
"Tell me what you remember," Aric said.
Selisse closed her eyes.
"The east corridor," she whispered. "Three weeks ago. After evening lessons. The academy was nearly empty."
The chamber listened.
"I heard footsteps beneath the floor. Three steps. Then silence. I thought it was a servant in the lower hall."
The blue light in the rings began to move.
"I heard them again the next night. The steps stopped beneath the old fountain."
The Veylin door opened a finger's width.
Selisse continued.
"On the third night, the footsteps came from above."
The chamber trembled.
The construct's voice lowered.
"Continue."
"I looked up," Selisse said. "There was no one on the balcony. But I saw a shadow on the ceiling."
The door opened wider.
"What did it look like?" Aric asked.
"A hand."
The word fell into the chamber.
The black column pulsed.
The approaching entities below roared.
Selisse's face tightened.
"Four fingers. Too long. It pressed against the stone from the other side."
The Veylin door opened another inch.
"And then?" Aric asked.
"It spoke my name."
The construct stopped moving.
The chamber went still.
Selisse opened her eyes.
"It said, 'Not yet.'"
The door unlocked.
A deep sound rolled through the vault.
The pale bindings around Edrin fell away.
He collapsed forward.
Caelan caught him.
The System opened.
[Secondary lock opened.]
[Founding Vault route condition fulfilled.]
[Memory substitution accepted.]
[Primary gate access: Active.]
The construct's face turned toward Aric.
"Carrier."
Aric stood.
"What now?"
"Return the tooth."
The door behind the black column opened fully.
A narrow stair descended into blue darkness.
At its base, something moved.
The approaching entities had reached the lower chamber.
The first shape climbed into view.
It had the body of a hound, but its back was covered in stone plates and its mouth opened vertically.
Behind it came two more.
Then a tall figure dragging chains of black material.
The System responded.
[New hostile life-forms detected.]
[Temporary designation: Vault Hounds.]
[Threat level: High.]
[Count: Four confirmed.]
The tall figure stepped into the light.
Its body was wrapped in strips of old metal and dark cloth.
Its face was hidden behind a smooth mask.
The System hesitated.
[Classification: Unresolved.]
The construct spoke.
"Guardians."
The masked figure raised one hand.
The Vault Hounds spread across the chamber.
The patrol captain lifted her sword.
Caelan pulled Edrin behind him.
Selisse moved beside Aric.
The Veylin door closed behind them with a heavy seal.
The construct's face dimmed.
"Open the road."
Aric looked at the guardians.
Then at the descending stair.
Then at the black column.
The Dark Wolf Fang was somewhere below.
The city stood above.
And the memory-route inside him had become a road that could be followed.
He lowered his stance.
"First," he said, "we get past the guardians."
The nearest Vault Hound lunged.
Aric met it with the spearhead.
