Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15

The word hung in the cold air, a flat, immutable rejection. Edward stood rigid, his topaz eyes burning with a protective fire that seemed to eclipse the fading twilight. "No." The simple syllable was a wall, ancient and unyielding.

Jane's expression did not change. It did not need to. The air around her seemed to crackle with a sudden, invisible energy. "That was not a request," she whispered, her voice a silken threat.

Reina felt it before she saw it—a shift in the pressure of the atmosphere, a chilling intent that flowed from Jane like a wave. Edward's knees buckled. A silent, agonized scream contorted his features as he clutched his head, collapsing into the damp earth. Illusionary fire. Reina knew it, felt the echo of Jane's unique brand of torment as if it were a cold draft from another room.

"Edward!" Bella cried out. She didn't attack; she shielded. She seemed to concentrate on him, and as she did, a palpable, shimmering barrier erupted around him. Jane's power, the excruciating burn, seemed to hit an invisible dome and slide off, useless.

Jane's lip curled, a low growl rumbling in her chest. The failure to penetrate the shield was a personal insult. Her focus intensified, the air growing thick and heavy with her concentration. Bella grimaced, her own shield straining under the relentless, unseen assault.

The tableau held for a fractured second: Edward behind the wavering shield, Jane pouring her wrath upon it, Carlisle poised on the edge of violent intervention.

A new sensation bloomed in Reina's mind. Not a probe, but a pull. An instinct, raw and untrained, screamed at her to act. To protect Jane. Her gaze snapped to Bella, to that shimmering, impenetrable shield wrapped so tightly around Edward. It's a part of her, Reina thought, the knowledge blooming fully formed from the emptiness of her past. She's projecting it. Containing it.

Reina didn't think. She willed. She visualized that brilliant, protective dome not around the two vampires, but collapsing inward, smothering itself, turning its immense power into a suffocating blanket wrapped tightly around its creator. She pictured a lid being slammed shut on a boiling pot.

The effect was instantaneous.

Bella gasped, a sharp, startled sound. The shimmer in the air around Edward didn't just vanish; it seemed to recoil, snapping back into Bella with violent force. Her eyes flew wide with shock and confusion. Her shield hadn't been broken; it had been jammed. Forcibly turned inward, stunning her, breaking her fierce concentration.

In the void of the sudden quiet, Reina moved. She stepped in front of Jane, placing herself between her maker and the stunned Cullens. Her movement was smooth, deliberate, a graceful positioning that was both a defense and a claim.

All motion stopped. Carlisle's look of pained diplomacy shifted to one of utter astonishment, his eyes fixed on Reina.

Her voice, when it came, was not the timid, memory-less novice from the jet. It was low, steady, and carried the chilling weight of absolute truth. It was the voice of the Volturi.

"You will stand down," Reina said, her crimson eyes sweeping over each of the present Cullen family members. "You will cooperate. Or the full might of the Volturi guard will descend upon this forest. And they," she paused, letting the threat hang in the air like a blade, "will not be here to ask questions. They will not be here for proof. They will be here for an extermination. And they will show no mercy."

She stood there, a beautiful, terrifying paradox. A new-born vampire with the composure of an ancient, an empty vessel suddenly filled with the chilling authority of her station. Her posture was not aggressive, but immovable. She was a wall. Jane's wall.

Behind her, Jane was utterly still. The rage had vanished from her features, replaced by something far more profound. Her crimson eyes, wide and unblinking, were fixed on the back of Reina's head. A tremor, faint but undeniable, ran through Jane's form. It was not fear. It was the seismic shift of awe, of obsession deepening into something immeasurable. This loyalty, this power, this fierce, instinctual protectiveness… it was more intoxicating than any blood, more powerful than any gift.

Her fingers, which had been curled into fists, slowly relaxed. A slow, predatory smile touched her lips, a silent promise gleaming in her eyes reserved only for the woman standing between her and her enemies. The hunt was forgotten. The mission was secondary.

You are mine, Jane's entire being seemed to thrum with the thought, and I am, irrevocably, yours.
