Chapter 24 - CHAPTER 24

The air inside the Cullen house was unnervingly still after the meadow's charged encounter. Carlisle's calm demeanor was a polished mask, but the undercurrent of centuries-old caution was palpable as he led them down a wide hallway. "This should suffice," he said, opening a door to a spacious, airy room with a large bed draped in neutral tones.

Jane's grip on Reina's hand tightened infinitesimally, her crimson eyes scanning the space with a predator's efficiency. It was a assessment, not of comfort, but of defensibility, of sightlines. Old habits, Reina thought, died a harder death than she had.

"We appreciate your hospitality, Carlisle," Reina said, her voice softer than she intended. It was the only sound that seemed to fit in the quiet tension.

"It is our pleasure," Carlisle replied, his kind eyes lingering on their joined hands. "We will give you a moment. The others will be… eager to discuss the new arrangements." He closed the door with a soft click, leaving them alone.

The silence that followed was a living thing. Jane turned to her, the harsh angles of her face softening as she looked only at Reina. She brought their clasped hands up, pressing Reina's knuckles to her cool, marble-like lips. "Alone at last," she murmured, the words a velvet brush against Reina's skin. "Truly alone."

Her gaze dropped to Reina's mouth, and the memory of the forest, of Jane's skillful mouth and possessive hands, flooded Reina with a warmth that was entirely at odds with the sterile room. Jane leaned in, her breath a ghost of a touch on Reina's lips. "I can still taste you on my tongue," she whispered, a confession that was both a threat and a worship.

Before their lips could meet, a low, rumbling argument from the main living area fractured the moment. The shifters. Their discontent was a storm cloud pressing against the windows.

Jane pulled back, a flicker of ancient annoyance in her eyes, instantly banked when she saw the look on Reina's face. "They are… persistent," Jane stated, a master of understatement.

"They're protective," Reina corrected gently. "We're the unknown variable."

Jane's head tilted. "You are known to me. That is all that matters." She said it with such absolute, unshakable conviction that Reina felt her knees weaken. This fearsome creature, this instrument of an ancient, tyrannical power, saw her as the center of its universe.

"They need to see that," Reina said, taking a steadying breath. "We should go back out there."

When they re-entered the great room, the atmosphere was a taut wire about to snap. The Cullens were a still, pale tableau on one side. On the other, Jacob Black and his pack—Leah, Seth, Embry, Quil—stood with their arms crossed, their postures radiating pure, undiluted hostility. Jacob's eyes, dark and wary, tracked Jane's every microscopic movement.

It was Bella who broke the silence, her voice calm but edged with steel. She stood beside Edward, her hand resting on his arm. "Renesmee isn't afraid," she stated, as if that were the beginning and end of the discussion. "Her intuition has never led us wrong."

"That doesn't mean we ignore protocol, Bells," Jacob ground out, his gaze never leaving Jane. "The treaty is clear. Any vampire staying in Forks territory abides by our laws. Or there is no treaty."

"And what are these laws?" Reina asked, stepping forward slightly, drawing the heated gazes onto herself. She felt Jane shift behind her, a silent, solid wall of support.

"The diet," Sam Uley said, his voice a low, authoritative rumble as he emerged from his pack, behind Jacob's. He stood beside Jacob, a united front. "You either live as the Cullens do, or you hunt well outside our lands. We will not have our people, or any human, be your personal menu."

All eyes swung to Jane. This was her domain, her decision. The Volturi did not answer to wolves. The air grew thick, waiting for her icy, dismissive retort, for the wave of agonizing pain she could deliver without a second thought.

Jane's lips, so recently whispering sinful promises against Reina's skin, parted. But she did not look at the shifters. She turned her head, her crimson gaze finding Reina's. The intensity in them was not anger, but something far more shocking: deference.

"Well, my love?" Jane's voice was low, meant only for Reina, yet it carried in the preternatural silence of the room. "The idea of animal blood is… abhorrent to me. The taste is stagnant, the thrill nonexistent." A collective, silent shockwave moved through the Cullens. Carlisle's eyebrows raised a fraction of an inch. Emmett looked genuinely bewildered. "But," Jane continued, her eyes softening only for the woman before her, "you will decide. I will abide by what you deem best for us."

The silence that followed was absolute. Stunned. Jacob blinked. Seth gaped. Even the unflappable Edward looked taken aback. Jane Volturi, the most feared lieutenant of the Volturi Guard, the vampire who commanded agony with a thought, had just publicly surrendered her will to another she had known for a handful of weeks.

This was more than trust; it was a total relinquishing of control, a gift more intimate than any physical joining. She saw the truth in Jane's eyes—the distaste for the compromise warring with the overwhelming need for her approval.

She reached out, her fingers intertwining with Jane's cool ones, a silent acceptance of the profound responsibility she'd been given. She turned to face the room, to the shocked faces of allies and wary opponents.

"We will hunt outside of Forks," Reina announced, her voice clear and steady, resonating with a newfound confidence. She felt Jane's hand flex in hers, not in protest, but in acknowledgement. "We will respect your treaty."

Jacob's stern expression faltered, replaced by pure, unadulterated amazement. He looked from Reina's determined face to Jane's submissive posture, and simply shook his head in disbelief.

It was Emmett who broke the tension with a low whistle. "Well, I'll be damned," he muttered to Rosalie. "Never thought I'd see the day."

Jane's lips curved into a small, private smile meant only for Reina. You see? her eyes seemed to say. For you, I would do anything. And in that look, Reina felt a promise, a silent vow that their first hunt together would be just the beginning of a thousand new, thrilling sensations.
