Chapter 106: The Pulse of Power
The journey back to the Land of Sound was a blur of dense forests and mist-shrouded paths, but thankfully, it was uneventful. No Akatsuki, no Konoha pursuit squads. Just the solitary path of a man carrying a new, heavy secret. Finally, the familiar, foreboding entrance to Otogakure yawned before him, a maw leading into the earth.
As Ren stepped into the torch-lit gloom of the subterranean village, the sound-nin on duty immediately snapped to attention. Without a word of greeting, they offered deep, respectful bows.
"Lord Ren!" they intoned in unison, their voices echoing slightly in the stone corridor.
*So, Orochimaru's given the order,* Ren thought, his expression not shifting from its default mask of cool indifference. *Trying to maintain the illusion of 'partnership' after that little stunt with Kabuto. How transparent.*
He offered no acknowledgment, sweeping past them without a glance. His first destination wasn't the audience hall to report to the snake sannin; it was the relative, albeit minimal, privacy of his own quarters. Let Orochimaru wait. Let him wonder.
The moment the heavy stone door of his room slid shut, the performative aloofness dropped from his shoulders. He wasn't here to play political games right now. He had a far more pressing objective.
Across the base, in the main hall, Orochimaru sat coiled on his throne-like chair, listening as Kabuto delivered his report.
"Lord Orochimaru," Kabuto began, adjusting his glasses. "Ren has returned. He proceeded directly to his chambers and has not emerged. It is... rather disrespectful. He did not seek an audience with you upon his arrival."
A low, rasping chuckle escaped Orochimaru's lips. "Hehehe~ Let him have his petty defiance, Kabuto. Our... overzealous surveillance attempt was an error. A show of displeasure is to be expected. Or perhaps he is genuinely fatigued from his journey. We will afford him his space. I will pay him a visit personally tomorrow. There is much to discuss."
"Understood, my lord," Kabuto bowed slightly. "Shall I increase... discreet observation?"
"No," Orochimaru said, his voice sharpening for a moment. "That particular tactic has already cost us goodwill. We will not press the issue. What of Sasuke?"
"He remains in the primary training ground, my lord. He has shown no reaction to his brother's return. His focus is absolute. He has not requested new tutelage from you in some days, instead obsessively practicing the techniques from a single scroll. It appears to be the one Ren gave him."
Orochimaru's serpentine eyes gleamed with interest. "Intriguing. Their relationship is a paradox of hostility and cryptic assistance. But it is their affair. As long as it does not interfere with Sasuke's development as my future vessel, I will not intervene. And you, Kabuto, will treat Ren with the outward respect of a partner. The incident is closed. For now."
"Of course, Lord Orochimaru." With another bow, Kabuto retreated, leaving the sannin to his thoughts.
Back in his room, Ren sat cross-legged on the sparse bed, the outside world shut away. His deliberate snub of Orochimaru was a calculated move—a reminder that their alliance was brittle and his cooperation was not a given. But that was a concern for tomorrow.
Now, he focused inward. *System,* he commanded silently.
The familiar, sterile interface of his mind flickered to life. **["Host interface active. Awaiting command."]**
*The Garel ore. You stated it could be synthesized into a potent elixir. Confirm the process and cost.*
**["Acknowledged. The Garel mineral possesses unique properties that enhance vitality and chakra capacity. Synthesis is possible. Requirement per unit: One Garel stone of sufficient purity. Cost: 10,000 System Points. Result: One vial of 'Garel Essence Extract.'"]**
*Ten thousand points? Plus the value of the ore itself? That's a steep price for one vial,* Ren mused, a frown creasing his brow. He mentally reviewed his reserves: 101,000 points. A significant sum, earned through brutal efficiency and the deaths of capable shinobi. But power of this magnitude was never cheap.
*No matter,* he decided, resolve hardening. *The potential payoff is worth the investment. I need every advantage I can get. System, synthesize five vials.*
**["Command confirmed. Initiating synthesis. Deducting 50,000 System Points. Host remaining points: 51,000. Processing material..."]**
In his hand, five chunks of the rough, faintly glowing Garel ore materialized from his personal storage space. They shimmered for a brief moment before dissolving into motes of ethereal light, consumed by the system's unseen process. A moment later, the light coalesced, solidifying into five exquisite glass vials, each filled with a luminous, azure liquid that seemed to pulse with a soft, internal light.
Ren picked one up. It was cool to the touch. The liquid within swirled lazily, thick like nectar.
*This is it?* he thought, holding it up to the faint light of his oil lamp. *System, you're absolutely certain about the effects? No... undesirable side effects?*
**["Affirmative. The system does not deal in imperfections. The Garel Essence Extract will enhance physical vitality, accelerate cellular regeneration, and permanently expand chakra reserves. The effects are stable and cumulative. Efficacy is guaranteed."]**
A slow smile spread across Ren's face. The system's guarantees were the one thing in this treacherous world he could truly rely on.
*Time for a field test.*
Uncorking one vial, he downed the contents in a single gulp. It was tasteless, but the moment it hit his system, it was as if a sun had ignited in his chest.
A wave of pure, vibrant warmth flooded through him, saturating every cell, every fiber of his being. It wasn't a violent surge but a deep, profound awakening. He felt his already substantial chakra reserves swell, the pathways broadening, the energy within them becoming denser, more potent. A thrilling sensation of raw life thrummed under his skin—his senses sharpened, and he could feel a heightened resilience weaving itself into his very muscles and bones. The minor aches and fatigue from his journey vanished instantly.
*Incredible,* he breathed, clenching and unclenching a fist, marveling at the palpable thrum of power within him. *It really works. My capacity has increased by nearly ten percent. And my recovery rate... it's significantly faster. This is beyond what I hoped for.*
The initial thrill of power soon settled into cold, calculating satisfaction. He looked at the remaining four vials, his mind already weaving plans.
*Such a potent tool shouldn't be hoarded. It needs to be strategically deployed.* A wicked grin touched his lips. *A name... it needs a name. Something that speaks to its nature. It pulses with life, with power... 'Pulse.' Yes. That will do.*
He carefully stored the four remaining vials of "Pulse" away.
*Tomorrow,* he thought, his eyes narrowing. *I'll give one to Sasuke. Let's see what the snake makes of that. The others... I have just the candidates in mind.*
With his new assets secured and his body humming with augmented power, Ren finally allowed himself to relax. The political maneuvering with Orochimaru could wait. For now, he had everything he needed.
