Chapter 152: Shockwaves Across the Nations
A rare moment of peace had settled over the Hokage's office. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Seizing the opportunity, Tsunade produced a small ceramic flask and a single glass from a drawer with the practiced ease of a seasoned connoisseur. A triumphant smile played on her lips. *Just one,* she told herself, *a small reward for surviving another mountain of paperwork.*
She had just brought the glass to her lips, the rich aroma of sake tantalizingly close, when the door to her office burst open.
"Lady Tsunade! It's terrible! Something awful has happened!"
Shizune stood in the doorway, her face ashen, clutching a scroll so tightly her knuckles were white. Tsunade jumped, the glass slipping from her fingers to shatter on the floor, its contents spreading a dark stain across the polished wood.
"Shizune! Don't you know how to knock?" Tsunade snapped, quickly snatching up a random document from her desk to feign busyness. The potent smell of alcohol immediately filled the room.
Shizune's panic momentarily subsided, replaced by a familiar, stern expression. "Lady Tsunade... were you drinking during work hours again?"
"Wha—? No! Of course not!" Tsunade blustered, avoiding Shizune's gaze. "I was just... appreciating the bouquet! A new brand of ink, very pungent."
"Honestly, as the Hokage, you need to set an example! What if an important dignitary had seen you?" Shizune began, her hands on her hips.
"I know, I know! Enough!" Tsunade interrupted, eager to escape the lecture. "You said something big happened. What is it?"
The reminder snapped Shizune back to reality, her face once again clouded with dread. "Oh! It's terrible! This intelligence report just came in from the communications division. It's about the Land of Lightning... It's catastrophic!"
"The Land of Lightning?" Tsunade's playful demeanor vanished. She took the scroll from Shizune's trembling hands and unsealed it. As her eyes scanned the encoded text, her blood ran cold. The color drained from her face, and her grip on the parchment tightened until it crinkled. She finished reading and shot to her feet, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "When did this arrive?!"
"Just moments ago! I came straight to you!"
Tsunade's mind raced, the implications of the report unfolding like a nightmare. "Shizune! Issue an emergency order! All Jōnin currently in the village are to report to the briefing room immediately, no exceptions! Recall any outbound teams on non-critical missions. This is a priority-one alert!"
"Yes, my lady!" Shizune nodded and vanished in a swirl of leaves, her footsteps echoing down the hall.
Tsunade sank back into her chair, the crumpled scroll feeling like a lead weight in her hand. She stared out the window at the peaceful village, the laughter of children playing in the distance a stark contrast to the news she now held. "The balance of power... it's been shattered. The peace we've known is over."
Within the hour, the Hokage's briefing room was packed. The air was thick with tension and unspoken questions. Prominent figures like Kakashi Hatake, Might Guy, and the leaders of the various clans stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Konoha's elite. The usual low murmur of a gathering was absent, replaced by a heavy silence. Even Might Guy refrained from his boisterous greetings, sensing the gravity in Tsunade's expression.
Seeing the room was full, Tsunade rose. "Thank you for gathering on such short notice. I know you are all wondering what warrants this emergency assembly."
"Lady Hokage," Kakashi said, his visible eye narrowed with concern. He was still in his hospital attire, having been discharged prematurely for this meeting. "What's happened?"
Tsunade held up the intelligence scroll. "This report contains news that will change the face of the shinobi world." She handed it to Kakashi. "Read it aloud. Everyone needs to hear this."
Kakashi took the scroll. As he read, his single eye widened in sheer disbelief. The paper trembled slightly in his hand. "This... it's impossible..."
"What is it, Rival?" Guy asked, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
Kakashi looked up, meeting the gaze of every Jōnin in the room. His voice was low and heavy, each word laden with the weight of the truth. "Kumogakure... has been destroyed. The village... has been razed to the ground."
For a moment, there was only stunned silence. Then, the room erupted.
"Destroyed? That's impossible!"
"Kakashi, this is no time for jokes!"
"Kumo is one of the Five Great Villages! Their military might is second to none!"
"ENOUGH!" Tsunade's voice roared, amplified by chakra, slamming against the walls and silencing the crowd instantly. She glared at them, her expression fierce. "This is not a joke. It is confirmed. As of yesterday, Kumogakure was invaded. More than half of their shinobi forces have been killed or severely wounded. The Fourth Raikage himself was critically injured, losing his left arm in the battle. He clings to life, but his recovery will be long, if he recovers at all."
A new wave of shock, colder and more profound, swept through the Jōnin. This was not a rumor; it was a direct report from their Hokage. The sheer impossibility of it was paralyzing. Who could wield such power? What force could dismantle one of the world's strongest military powers in a single day?
As the stunned silence stretched on, Tsunade's gaze swept over the assembled faces of Konoha's best and brightest. She saw fear, confusion, and a dawning realization of their new reality.
"The world we knew is gone," Tsunade declared, her voice echoing in the silent room. "And the one who did this... is still out there."
