Chapter 10 - Storms and Invitations

The sea roared with sudden anger. Waves rose high, striking the harbor walls with force, and the ground trembled beneath their feet. The team rushed to stand together, weapons in hand, eyes scanning the horizon.

"What is this," Mira whispered, her voice tight.

Elias steadied himself, his gaze locked on the turbulent waters. "Stay sharp. This is no ordinary storm."

Dev raised his shield. "It feels alive. Like someone is moving the sea itself."

A moment later the water parted, forming a wall that rose higher than the tallest buildings. From within the surge, a figure stepped out. Broad-shouldered, cloaked in seaweed and dripping saltwater, he carried with him the aura of the ocean. His hair was long, dark, and tangled like the waves, and his eyes glowed with a faint blue light. Behind him, shapes swam in the shadows of the water - sharks, schools of fish, and even the dark outline of a giant whale.

The team braced for a fight.

But the man lifted his hand. Instantly, the sea calmed. The towering wall of water lowered and melted back into the harbor, leaving only ripples behind. The air smelled of salt and storm, but peace returned.

"I saw your fight at the harbor," the man said in a deep voice, his words carrying like waves across sand. "I was watching, waiting to know your purpose. Now I know. You are trying to stop the evil. You are gathering strength. You are building a team."

Kael stepped forward, cautious but firm. "And you? Who are you?"

The man straightened, his wet cloak dripping onto the ground. "I am Nerion . I am bound to the sea. I can live in the water and on the land. The oceans answer my call, and the creatures of the deep fight at my side. I saw the darkness rising, and I chose to wait until I knew if you were worthy. Now I am ready. I will join you."

Mira lowered her sword slowly, her fear giving way to awe. "You… command the ocean."

Nerion gave a small nod. "And I will lend that power to your cause."

Kael's eyes softened. "Then welcome, Nerion. Your strength is more than we hoped for." He turned to the others. "We are growing, but this is only the beginning. We need more. If we want to stand against the evil waiting out there, we need every ally we can find."

Elias looked to Kael with quiet resolve. "Go. Find them. But remember, some of them may not wish to fight."

"I know," Kael said. He looked to Keiren next. "You will take another path. Move quietly. Deliver letters to those we cannot reach. Elias will give you the names. Do it unseen. Do it as only you can."

Keiren gave a crooked grin. "Finally, some fun. I will make sure they get the message. They will not even know how."

With plans set, the team prepared to divide. Nerion remained with them, his presence like the calm weight of the sea itself, while Kael stepped into the shadows to begin his search.

Kael's first journey took him to the mountains north of the harbor. He climbed steep paths until he reached a plateau where the wind howled. There, sitting cross-legged on a stone, was an old friend named Orin. Orin's gift was the ability to bend the air around him. The winds obeyed him, carrying voices, striking enemies, or wrapping him in a shield.

Kael called out, "Orin, I need your help."

Orin opened his eyes, the wind curling around him like invisible ropes. "I swore to stay away from the fight, Kael. You know that."

"The world does not care for your vow," Kael replied. "The evil grows. You have the power to stand against it. Do not leave us to fight alone."

Orin hesitated. His gaze dropped to his hands. Finally, he said, "If you fall, who will protect the people below? Very well. I will join, but my vow remains. I fight only to protect, never to destroy."

"That is enough," Kael said, relief in his tone.

Further south, Kael found another. This one was less willing. Her name was Selene, and her gift was the ability to step into shadows and vanish, reappearing where no one expected. She was fast, clever, and nearly impossible to catch.

Kael cornered her in an alley, though he knew she had let him catch her.

"You want me in your war," Selene said, her voice sharp. "But I fight for no one. I look out for myself."

Kael held his ground. "I am not asking for blind loyalty. I am asking for survival. If we do not stand together, there will be no shadows left for you to hide in."

Her eyes flickered, but she shook her head. "Not yet. Prove you can survive the storm, and maybe I will join." With that, she melted into the darkness, gone in an instant.

Kael let her go. Not all would join. Not yet.

Meanwhile, Keiren carried out his task. He moved unseen, slipping through windows and crossing borders like a ghost. In the homes of old allies, he left letters - small, folded notes bearing the simple mark of their cause.

One warrior, finding the letter on his desk, frowned. "Where did this come from?"

Another, a hunter in the forests, opened his and sighed with a grin. "Ah, Keiren, it is you again. Still sneaking about."

Some burned the notes without reply. Others folded them carefully, as though holding a secret promise. Each choice mattered. Each reply would shape the war to come.

Back at the harbor, Arin trained under the eyes of Mira and Dev, his powers slowly beginning to settle. Nerion often watched from the water's edge, speaking to the sea as though it were alive, teaching Arin to listen for the rhythm of power.

When Kael returned from one of his journeys, weary but resolute, Elias met him. "How many agreed?"

"Some," Kael said. "Not all. But it is a start."

Elias gave a faint smile. "Keiren is still at work. Together, we will gather them. In time, the team will be ready."

As the sun set over the harbor, the waves crashed softly against the shore.
