"SCREEEEECH!"
Faust, now missing half its body, retreated into its cloak, letting out a shrill wail that could make your ears bleed. The sound was like claws raking across glass, and it made Nero's brows knit together in annoyance.
"Shut the hell up!"
Gripping Echidna tightly, Nero summoned five spectral blue swords behind her and charged at Faust again.
The demon's core was so pathetically weak that Echidna couldn't just yank it out of the cloak for a clean kill. Gotta admit, there's some dark humor in that.
Her magic swords shot forward, tearing Faust's enchanted cloak to shreds. Nero flung out her whip-like blade, snagging the now-grounded Faust. She wrapped it tight, loop after loop, before yanking hard.
The demon exploded into a mess of gooey chunks, splattering across the ground. Nero reeled Echidna back, glancing over her shoulder. Sure enough, the two remaining Mephistos had already bolted, scampering far into the distance.
Too bad for them— that head start was barely a drop in the bucket against Nero's speed. She took off after them.
The Mephistos darted through the valley, their pace erratic, until they suddenly sped up and vanished from sight. They might've fooled an ordinary schmuck, but not Nero. She caught the moment they veered sharply to the right, ducking behind a rock wall to fake their disappearance.
What's their game? An ambush? Or maybe a hidden passage?
Nero slowed her pace, landing lightly at the spot where the demons had vanished. A quick glance confirmed it—a pitch-black cave mouth gaped in the rock wall.
No breeze, no sound, no light. Just a cavern deep enough to feel like the gates of the underworld.
If weaklings like Mephistos weren't scared to waltz in, Nero sure as hell wasn't about to hesitate. Even if the other side led straight to the demon world, it'd just be a pain in the ass to get back.
She leapt into the cave, conjuring a glowing blue rose in her hand to light the way as she landed on the damp floor.
The faint glow revealed a classic karst cave. Towering stalactites and stalagmites stretched toward each other in the vast space, their slick surfaces reflecting the light, bathing everything in eerie blue fluorescence.
No sign of the Mephistos she'd followed, but those creeps could phase through objects, so they were probably lurking behind some thin rock wall. Curiosity piqued, Nero pressed deeper into the unknown.
The further she went, the weirder it got. Not just the Mephistos—she hadn't seen any demons. Demons don't need food or rest; as long as they've got enough magic juice, they keep kicking. A remote cave like this should've been a damn demon daycare. But there wasn't a single one around, which pointed to two possibilities.
Option one: something big and territorial was holed up deeper in, scaring off every other demon that dared to trespass.
Option two: there was a connection to the demon world down there, a revolving door for these creeps to come and go.
Either way, it was good news for Nero. Unless her dad Vergil or Emperor Mundus suddenly crawled out of their graves for a rematch, no demon was taking her down solo. If anything, this little discovery might just let her wipe out a major threat to Fortuna.
Then, two shadowy figures burst from the wall ahead, plunging into the deeper darkness. Nero smirked. Those were her targets, no doubt about it.
And it looked like… they were trying to lure her deeper.
"Alright, now you've got my attention."
With a grin, Nero gave chase.
She wanted to know what these Mephistos were so eager to show her.
The deeper she went, the thicker the demonic aura grew, like the air itself was soaked in it. The Mephistos, with their wall-phasing tricks, had the upper hand in this chase, almost like they were slowing down on purpose to keep her in sight.
At the end of the cave, just as she'd expected, stood a massive black monolith.
A Hell Gate, identical to the one looming in Fortuna's city center. The towering stone slab pierced the cave's ceiling, fused with the stalagmites like some mythic Wall of Sighs.
The Mephistos circled the gate in the air, practically taunting her after the long chase, before diving into the monolith and vanishing through a tiny spatial rift.
Nero's expression twisted into a mix of exasperation and amusement. She crossed her arms, idly twirling a strand of hair by her cheek.
"Okay, seriously, Grandpa Sparda, what's the deal? Two Hell Gates on one tiny island? One portal back to the old stomping grounds would've been plenty. Why the hell are there two?"
And to top it off, the seal on this underground gate was shoddier than the one up top. Demons were already slipping through the cracks.
Nero sighed, her mind flashing back to Dante slicing through a real Hell Gate with Yamato. She reached for her chest, fingers brushing the blade's hilt.
Dante had left the sealed gate in Fortuna alone, partly because he didn't have Yamato at the time and partly to avoid freaking out the locals. But after this? No way that gate was staying up.
Better take it out when I get back.
In a flash, Yamato was drawn, and Nero's hair turned silver-white.
"Through me, you enter the city of woe—"
A slash of light cut through the air.
"Through me, you enter the abyss of sin!"
Another slash crossed the first, forming a blazing X.
"Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!"
Nero's voice rang out like a hymn, echoing through the cave in layers of resonance, swelling into a choir-like crescendo. Amid the sacred chant, three more slashes flashed.
The Hell Gate crumbled. Nero exhaled, sheathing Yamato as she turned to leave.
But Yamato didn't stay sheathed.
"Huh?" Nero glanced at the blade, which let out a sharp, keening hum. Instinct kicked in, and she whipped around.
In the ruins of the Hell Gate, a crack was forming. The edges shimmered with trembling space, the interior a void of endless black.
"Oh, come on—"
Before she could finish, the rift exploded outward, swallowing her whole and vanishing without a trace.
The cave's echoes faded, and the last flicker of light died out. The desolate silence of centuries reclaimed the space.
No one would ever know what happened here.
