omo Takamatsu is running.
Quiet and reserved, rarely one for exercise, she's never sprinted this hard in her life. But today, she has no choice. She can't let Sosei catch up. If she lets herself reconnect, lets them become friends again, the curse of "a lifelong companion" will claim Sosei's life.
Because that's the punishment for Tomo—a naive girl who didn't grasp the weight of "a lifetime" and made her wish so carelessly.
Though she can't recall the friend called "Shoko," Tomo vividly remembers the words she spoke to her:
"I want a friend who'll stay with me for life. That's my wish.
"Now, I finally believe that wish came true."
But it wasn't a wish. It was a curse. The moment Tomo said those words to Shoko, she vanished from her life like a shooting star.
Only then did Tomo realize the crushing weight behind the word "lifetime."
To keep her promise, to fulfill Tomo's wish, Shoko would never smile, move, or speak again. That was the price Tomo paid for her wish.
Shoko stayed by Tomo's side for her entire life.
From that day on, Tomo cut herself off from everyone. She couldn't—wouldn't—dare connect with anyone else. The curse she carried was too heavy.
Time passed, and Shoko's face, her laughter, the moments they shared, even her final, despairing gaze—all of it eroded like a sandcastle swept away by the tide, gone by some ordinary morning. But Tomo didn't forget. She wouldn't forget. It was her—her wish—that killed her most precious friend.
Now, she can't let Sosei, Riki, or anyone else suffer Shoko's fate.
"Tomo!"
So when Riki appeared on the path Tomo always took home, she didn't hesitate.
Ignoring the blood-red traffic light, she ducked under the barrier as it dropped in front of the tracks.
"Wait, Tomo!"
"Riki, watch out!"
The next moment, the Arakawa Line train, marked "Mikawa-bashi Station," barreled past Riki without slowing.
"Tomo?"
In the Red Moon world, Nero furrowed his brow, puzzled why Shoko suddenly mentioned that name.
Before Nero could decide whether to strike, Shoko vanished. Then her voice echoed from the blood-red moon above: "Mortis, Timoris, Amoris! Break's over—time to greet our guests!"
Nero's brow creased as he followed Shoko's lingering aura, slicing through space with his Yamato blade to escape the encirclement.
A few flashes later, Nero tracked Shoko to a set of train tracks.
Nearby, Shoko Toyokawa hovered in midair, offering an elegant curtsy. Before her, Riki Shiina drew her longbow, shielding Aine behind her. And just a short distance away—
Tomo Takamatsu sat slumped on the tracks, staring blankly ahead.
How'd they get here?
Riki aimed her arrow at the blue-haired girl in the sky, her voice icy. "From the look of you, you're with Kairi, aren't you? Quit playing games and give us your name!"
The moment Tomo darted onto the tracks as the train approached, Riki's heart had nearly frozen. But in a blink, crimson moonlight swallowed everything.
When Riki and Aine opened their eyes, the train was gone, and Tomo sat unharmed on the tracks. In its place was the blood-red moon overhead and a mysterious masked girl, floating in its glow, offering a polite "Good evening."
"Kairi? Never heard of her," the girl replied breezily. "But let's start with introductions. I'm Oblivionis, ruler under this red moon."
"…No."
A faint voice came from behind Riki. "You… you're…"
"Looks like your memory wipe wasn't all that effective."
Before Riki could check on Tomo, another voice cut through from nearby. A figure in a tailcoat dropped from the sky, landing lightly on the tracks. Gripping her blade and tipping her hat, she chuckled softly. "You just got here, and you're already busted, Shoko."
Shoko?
The name hit like a tidal wave, rocking everyone. Riki's guard shot up, her bowstring taut. "You're that Shoko? Weren't you dead?"
Tomo, after a moment of stunned silence, reacted sluggishly. "It… it's really… Shoko, you…"
Her identity exposed, Shoko shot an annoyed glance at the silver-haired, red-eyed "Samael." But then, a thought struck her—this could be an opportunity.
If Tomo recognized her despite the mask and erased memories, maybe she could use this to finish what she started.
Taking a deep breath, Shoko flashed a sweet smile and looked at Tomo. "That's right. It's me. I'm back."
"No, Tomo, don't trust her!" Riki shouted, but it barely registered. Tomo hesitated for a split second before starting to move toward her.
Aine, trembling since entering this world, stepped in to stop her. Looking at Tomo's dazed expression, she pleaded, "Tomo, don't fall for it! The dead don't come back—that's not the real Shoko!"
Tomo, fixated on "finally seeing Shoko again," barely heard Aine. But the words "the dead don't come back" snapped her awake. Right—Shoko was gone. Though the details were hazy, she'd died right in front of Tomo. No one could return from that…
But the blue-haired girl shattered Tomo's last defenses with a single sentence.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her smile sweet, her eyes clear and innocent, like a ghost of their faded past.
"Didn't we promise to stay together for life?"
That's right.
There's no mistake.
Tomo had never told anyone but Shoko her wish. It had to be her—she'd come back to keep their promise.
In that moment, Tomo forgot everything around her. All she saw was the figure floating in the sky.
She ran toward her without a second thought.
