Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty-Six

The morning after the message, Adriella woke to the soft sound of rain against her window. The world outside was blurred with silver streaks, as though heaven itself had wept overnight. She stretched slowly, savoring the rare peace of waking in Daniel's arms. His breathing was steady, his warmth pressed against her back, anchoring her.

For a moment, she allowed herself the luxury of stillness. No whispers of judgment. No shadows of doubt. Just the rhythm of rain, the steady thrum of his heartbeat, and the fragile miracle of being alive, here, now.

When Daniel stirred, his lips brushed against her temple. "Morning," he murmured.

She smiled, eyes still closed. "Morning."

He tightened his arms around her. "How are you feeling?"

The question was simple, but she knew he was asking more than about her sleep. He was asking if the message still haunted her, if the shadows still clawed at her chest. She turned in his arms so she could see him fully. His hair was tousled, his eyes heavy with sleep, but his concern was sharp, awake.

"I feel…" She paused, searching for the right words. "I feel like maybe I can breathe again. Yesterday scared me, but you—" her voice trembled— "you reminded me I don't have to fight it all alone."

Daniel brushed a stray curl from her face, his fingers lingering against her cheek. "And you never will. Not as long as I'm here."

The intimacy of his words struck deep. Her throat tightened, but instead of pulling away, she leaned in, capturing his lips with hers. The kiss was slow, deliberate—no rush, no desperation, just the steady reassurance of two souls meeting in the quiet after a storm.

When they finally broke apart, Daniel whispered, "I love you, Adriella."

The words hung between them, fragile yet fierce. Her chest tightened. She had known, of course—felt it in his patience, his laughter, his unwavering presence—but hearing it aloud unlocked something inside her.

Her voice shook as she answered, "I love you too."

It was the first time she had spoken those words since Tobi. They didn't feel like betrayal. They felt like truth—new, raw, and radiant.

But peace rarely lasts unbroken.

Later that afternoon, Adriella decided to meet her cousin, Ifeoma, at a café downtown. Ifeoma had been close to Tobi—practically a sister to him—and Adriella had been avoiding this conversation for months. Daniel encouraged her to go, even offering to join, but she wanted to face it alone first.

The café was crowded, filled with chatter and clinking cups. Adriella spotted Ifeoma at a corner table, her arms folded, her expression unreadable.

"You look… different," Ifeoma said once Adriella sat.

"Different how?" Adriella asked carefully.

"Like someone who's moved on." The words weren't cruel, but they carried a sharp edge.

Adriella's hands tightened around her mug. "Ifeoma, I'll never stop loving Tobi. You know that."

Ifeoma's eyes glistened, but her tone hardened. "Then how can you sit here smiling? How can you laugh again? And with someone new, so soon?"

The accusation sliced deep. Adriella swallowed hard, her throat burning. "It's been years, Ifeoma. Years of silence, of crying myself to sleep, of barely surviving. Finding Daniel doesn't mean I've forgotten Tobi. It means I've finally remembered how to live."

Ifeoma shook her head, pain etched into every line of her face. "But don't you see how it looks? To people who knew you both? It feels like you replaced him."

Tears stung Adriella's eyes, but she forced herself to hold Ifeoma's gaze. "Tobi isn't replaceable. He never will be. Loving Daniel doesn't erase him. It's not about replacement—it's about growth. My heart… it's big enough for both grief and love."

Ifeoma's lips trembled, but before she could respond, a familiar voice broke through.

Daniel.

He stood just behind Adriella, his presence calm but firm. "She's right." His voice carried, low and steady. "I don't want to erase Tobi. I don't want to compete with him. I only want to love the woman he loved, to carry her forward where he no longer can."

Adriella's breath caught. She hadn't expected him to come, but his timing felt like providence.

Ifeoma looked between them, her defenses faltering. Slowly, she exhaled. "I just don't want him forgotten."

Adriella reached across the table, her hand covering Ifeoma's. "Neither do I. He lives here"—she pressed her hand over her heart—"and here"—she gestured toward her journal in her bag. "He always will. But if I stop living because he's gone, then I lose him twice."

Silence stretched, heavy but healing. Finally, Ifeoma nodded, tears spilling freely. "He would have wanted you to be happy."

The words loosened something Adriella hadn't realized she was still clutching. She leaned across the table, embracing her cousin tightly. For the first time, she felt no need to defend, no need to justify. Her love for Tobi and Daniel could coexist, unapologetic and unashamed.

When they left the café, Daniel slipped his hand into hers. "I didn't mean to intrude," he said softly.

She shook her head, her eyes wet but smiling. "You weren't intruding. You were exactly what I needed."

He pulled her close, his forehead resting against hers in the middle of the bustling street. "Then let's make a promise, Adriella. No more fear. No more shame. Just us—building something real, one day at a time."

Her heart swelled. "I promise."

As the rain began again, they walked together under one umbrella, their steps steady, their bond unshaken. And for the first time, Adriella felt not just like a woman healing, but a woman living—boldly, bravely, beautifully.
