"I kill people because I need to eat!"
What a cruel truth, just like humans kill chickens, ducks, fish, geese, and various other animals for food. The difference is that humans are not chickens, ducks, or fish.
Now, someone has connected them.
The way a chicken feels when it's slaughtered, is how humans feel.
A chill permeated from the depths of their souls. Facing the ugly-looking Heikert Hammond, everyone present felt the fear of a natural predator—an instinct, just like prey facing a hunter.
Even the reporter, who was about to drop a bombshell, put down his camera, his face filled with terror.
"I like your fear."
Heikert smiled, a flicker of greed in his eyes quickly suppressed. "Don't worry, I'm mainly here for an interview today. I won't eat you."
Everyone swallowed hard, subconsciously stepping back.
Heikert smiled. "Any more questions?"
As he spoke, his viper-like gaze fell on the female reporter in the front. Seeing the wet stain on her skirt, he disdainfully curled his lip and looked at the others.
"Anyone want to ask a question? I promise I won't hurt you."
Sheriff Scott, in charge of the mummy case, stepped forward, about to speak, when his stomach suddenly took a heavy blow. His body flew out, knocking over several people before landing on the road, his life unknown.
Heikert retracted his hand, saying expressionlessly,
"I said, only reporters are allowed to speak. Police… shut up."
"…"
This scene today was destined to go down in history, becoming everyone's nightmare.
Facing the powerful, overbearing, cruel, and cold-blooded Heikert Hammond, what could the weak and powerless reporters do? It wasn't that they didn't want to resist, but with the examples of the sheriff and chief before them, what was the use of resisting?
A middle-aged reporter cautiously stepped forward, asking in a hoarse voice,
"Mr. Hammond, I just checked your information and found that you were just an ordinary person before. How… how did you become like this?"
"That's a bit complicated."
Heikert stroked his chin, thought for a few seconds, then shrugged. "Ever since I encountered an alien, I became stronger."
"An alien?"
The reporter's eyes lit up, and he quickly asked, "What kind of alien? Where did you meet it?"
"What, you want to be like me too?"
When the murderous words came, the reporter quickly shook his head, urgently defending, "I didn't, I… I'm just curious."
Heikert sneered, pointed a finger, and the middle-aged reporter was lifted into the air and heavily slammed to the ground.
"This is punishment. Don't ask what you shouldn't." After speaking, he looked at the others. "Any other questions?"
Everyone was silent. They had a ton of questions to ask, but facing the temperamental big-headed monster, no one dared to step forward.
After a minute, no one spoke, and Heikert couldn't help but get angry.
"You disappoint me greatly. A perfectly good press conference ruined by a bunch of cowards. You've angered me, and you all deserve to die."
Invisible forces surged behind him.
The air writhed and twisted, powerful energy spreading outwards. The floor couldn't withstand it and cracked in large sections.
The police and FBI present disregarded everything else and quickly opened fire. The bullets only traveled a few meters before stopping, the air becoming unusually viscous, like a gelatinous substance.
Heikert raised his hand and pressed down. A mountain-like force descended from above. Everyone couldn't bear it and successively knelt on the ground. Even the strong FBI agents were no exception. Someone screamed in terror,
"Mr. Hammond, didn't you say you wouldn't hurt us?"
Heikert paused for a few seconds, then shook his head helplessly,
"I didn't want this, but I'm really hungry. Your fear is just too tempting."
Heikert licked his lips, and yellow beams of light shot from his eyes. Those illuminated by the beams immediately lost consciousness, and large patches of yellow particles appeared on their fear-stricken bodies.
Heikert opened his mouth and swallowed the yellow particles like a whale sucking in water.
This scene was clearly captured by the cameras on the stands, and everyone in front of their televisions witnessed an unforgettable sight.
Those who lost the yellow particles rapidly shrunk. Their muscles disappeared, their skin lost its color, becoming shriveled and sallow. In the blink of an eye, they transformed from normal people into mummified corpses that had been air-dried for hundreds of years… Half an hour later, in the central conference room of the White House in Washington, D.C.
Presidential aide Jensen Lowe walked to the screen and turned off the horrifying video.
The atmosphere in the conference room was somber, completely different from the usual clamor.
President Joel Nash looked at the political "bigwigs" on both sides of the table, a barely perceptible hint of mockery in his eyes. He motioned to his aide, who then spoke,
"This incident is very serious. Heikert Hammond has threatened national security, and even global security. He must be eliminated. Does anyone have any suggestions?"
Secretary of Defense Bruno Canter said in a deep voice,
"There's a Marine Corps unit north of Seashore City…" He was interrupted before he could finish by FBI Director Jack Harvey, "Deploying the Marines domestically! You're inciting civil unrest."
Bruno clenched his fist. "If we don't deploy the army, should we leave it to you?"
Jack Harvey said unceremoniously, "This matter itself falls within the FBI's jurisdiction. Not only do we need to deal with Heikert Hammond, but we also need to understand the reasons behind it."
"If I'm not mistaken, Heikert is a member of the Eye of Heaven, and the alien corpse is also in the Eye of Heaven's base. What happened between them, why Heikert became like this, must be thoroughly investigated. I suspect someone is using him to stir up trouble."
Bruno's expression changed slightly, and Vice President Dick Cheney said in a deep voice,
"Heikert's identity is a temporary employee. He was recruited because of his identity as a cell biology professor. We need such scientists to help research the alien corpse."
"But that's not what I understand."
Attorney General Marshall Warren interjected, "There are hundreds of cell biology professors in the United States, and many scientists more knowledgeable than him. Why didn't you hire a normal person, but instead chose a dangerous individual with a mental illness, just because his father is Senator Hammond?"
"I strongly suspect cronyism and dereliction of duty involved."
The founders of the Eye of Heaven immediately frowned. Things were indeed developing in this direction. They had anticipated it, but had no good solution.
Cronyism? It certainly existed.
Dereliction of duty? That too.
In the past, these would have been minor issues, not causing a stir. Now it was different. Cronyism and dereliction of duty were like two sharp knives plunged into the weakest part of the Eye of Heaven, leaving them speechless.
Marshall Warren turned to the President, saying very seriously,
"I suggest a comprehensive investigation of the Eye of Heaven to thoroughly understand the ins and outs."
As his voice fell, the air instantly quieted. Everyone's gaze involuntarily turned to Joel Nash at the front of the table. Power was so ridiculous. The seemingly rampant and lawless Eye of Heaven was merely a matter of a single sentence.
Of course, to utter that sentence, one not only needed ample preparation but also the right opportunity, after all, the United States is a society governed by law, isn't it?
