The dojo was unusually quiet, the only sound was that of my fists cutting through the air. Thirty-six days had passed since the dinner at my house, and my body could feel it. Not only had the pain become familiar, but my movements were now smoother.
A blue screen appeared before me.
[MISSION: TRAINING!]
Complete another day of training and learn the fundamentals of martial arts.
[COMPLETED]
[REWARD: 100 EXP, 50 SHOP POINTS]
I felt a surge of energy. My muscles relaxed, the pain faded, and a sensation of power ran through me. I was faster, stronger, and more agile than ever.
Suddenly, a new screen popped up.
[MAIN MISSION: THE FIRST STEP!]
Improvise a vigilante outfit, patrol the streets of Queens, and stop your first crime.
I grinned. Tonight would be my debut.
When I got home, everything was quiet. My mother, Eleanor, was at work and wouldn't be back until later that night. I took off the heavy training gear, which had served its purpose, and took a cold shower. I threw on some jeans and a simple shirt, ready to head out.
The doorbell rang, and when I opened it, there were Harry and Peter.
"Damon! Are you ready?" Harry asked with a grin stretching from ear to ear. "Peter finally agreed to a double date with MJ and Gwen, but we weren't going to leave you alone."
"Double date?" I asked, surprised. Peter blushed, and Harry and I burst out laughing.
"Yeah, we're going to the movies. The girls are already waiting," Peter said, smiling nervously.
We walked toward the mall and soon found MJ, the stunning redhead with bright green eyes, and Gwen, with her signature blonde hair.
"What's up, guys?" MJ was the first to speak, but before we could answer, a voice echoed nearby.
"Leave me alone!" shouted a girl.
My attention immediately drifted from my friends. I saw a white-haired girl being harassed by two guys. Without thinking, I rushed toward them with Peter and Harry.
"Hey! Didn't you hear the lady?" I said.
One of the guys turned to face us. "You looking for trouble? Walk away before I—"I didn't let him finish. My fist sank into his stomach, making him double over in pain, and I followed up with a kick to his head that knocked him out cold.
The second guy turned his back to the silver-haired girl, a grave mistake. She wasted no time and delivered a brutal kick straight to his groin. He collapsed to the ground before passing out from the pain.
"Seriously, thanks. I just hope that guy doesn't recover from the kick I gave him," she said.
I looked up at her. Her hair was platinum blonde, her eyes icy blue. She was absolutely stunning.
"Hi, I'm Felicia Hardy. I just moved to the city and got a little lost before those creeps cornered me," she said with a smile. Her eyes lingered on me for a moment, then shifted to Peter and Harry, who had hung back.
"Nice to meet you, Felicia. We can give you a tour. I'm Harry, and these are Peter, MJ, Gwen, and your knight in dark armor—Damon," Harry said, shooting me a look I immediately understood.
"Knight, huh? I'll have to make sure he lives up to the title," she murmured, and the way her eyes lingered on me made my heart skip a beat.
As we walked toward the theater, the others chatted happily, but Felicia and I lagged a little behind.
"So, you're new too," I said, glancing at her.
"Too?" she asked curiously.
"Yeah, well, I've been here for almost two months now," I replied, my gaze stopping at Delmar's before checking the watch on my wrist. "Want a snack? We've still got time, and I know the best sandwich shop in all of Queens."
Felicia looked at me for a moment, then smiled. "I'd love to."
By the end of the night, after the movie, we said our goodbyes. Felicia gave me her phone number, not without throwing me a playful wink.
"Call me, Damon," she said with a smile. I watched her walk away, hips swaying.
When I got home, the moon was shining brightly in the sky. I lay on my bed, sighing as I thought about everything that had happened that evening. I stared at the ceiling with a goofy smile before suddenly sitting up.
"Damn it! I still haven't made my suit."
I ran to my closet, pulled out a black hoodie, some black sweatpants, and a black ski mask. I put them on and looked at myself in the mirror.
"I look like a burglar."
I opened the system shop and saw my points: 1950. I wanted to buy a bulletproof vest for safety, but it cost 3000 points. I kept scrolling until something caught my eye.
64. Nunchaku (150 points)
Not bad. At the dojo I was just learning to use them, and I wasn't anywhere near an expert, but they would work for self-defense. And what better way to learn than in real combat?
I left the house and climbed onto the rooftop. The wind was blowing, and the city gleamed under the moonlight. It was time for my first patrol.
