Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Clark the Snitch, Sleepy Dio

Carefully laying the unconscious Logan on the couch—knocked out after a hundred punches from The World—Locke tossed a blanket over him.

Gotta say, that adamantium skull was no joke.

His knuckles were still stinging.

"Another time traveler?"

"This one came looking for me specifically?"

"Whoa!"

The teenager let out a whistle, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "Guess future me's pretty popular, huh?"

If you'd said that without The World's fist aimed at Logan's head, it might've landed better.

Sighing, Locke reached out and ruffled Dio's blond hair.

"Alright, you little punk, put your Stand away."

His eyes swept over the wrecked living room—spilled food, shattered plates, and three deep claw marks slashed into the wall.

"You know why this guy came back, right?"

Dio shrugged, looking totally unbothered. "Judging by this mess…"

"It's gotta have something to do with me."

"Dio!"

Before Locke could explain, Clark's voice echoed from outside, growing closer.

"Dio! Why'd you run off so fast? Mom said you forgot your blueberry pie! She said Uncle Locke probably didn't eat tonight—"

His words cut off as his blue eyes widened, taking in the chaotic living room.

"Uh… new birthday party decorations?"

"And who's this guy?"

"Just a passed-out traveler," Locke said smoothly.

"Okay… Uncle Locke."

Clark nodded obediently, while Dio snorted, shoving his hands in his pockets and heading for the stairs, his blond bangs casting a shadow over his eyes.

"I'm going to bed, Dad," he tossed over his shoulder. "Oh, and when that guy wakes up tomorrow, kick him out. Thanks."

Watching Dio vanish around the stairwell, Locke chuckled.

He's definitely curious.

Because, well…

"Uncle Locke," Clark said, sticking out his tongue and lowering his voice. "Dio's actually super excited for tomorrow."

"That kid." Locke shook his head, taking the blueberry pie from Clark. The warm, sweet aroma helped him relax a bit. He ruffled Clark's curly hair and grinned. "Tell your mom thanks for the pie."

"Will do!"

Clark nodded eagerly, but as he turned to leave, he stole another glance at the unconscious Logan on the couch.

Lowering his voice, he whispered, "Uncle Locke… this guy looks so sad. Even sleeping, he's all frowny."

Locke paused, noticing for the first time that even knocked out, Logan's muscles were tense.

And the injuries from The World's beating? Already healed.

Adamantium, huh?

"He'll be fine," Locke said, gently nudging Clark toward the door. "When this guy wakes up, we'll give him some of your mom's blueberry pie. That'll put a smile on his face."

Clark nodded and started to leave but suddenly spun back, his blue eyes sparkling.

"Uncle Locke!"

"I almost forgot to tell you a secret!"

Locke raised an eyebrow, setting the pie on a relatively clean spot on the dining table. "Oh? What's so top-secret?"

Clark waved him down, all mysterious-like, until Locke crouched closer. Cupping his hands around his mouth, the boy whispered excitedly, "Dio fell asleep in class today! For two whole periods!"

"What?!"

The news hit like a bombshell, and Locke's voice shot up before he quickly hushed himself. "You sure he was sleeping? Not faking it?"

"Swear on it!"

Clark nodded so hard his curls bounced. "Physics class! Mr. Jones called his name three times, and he didn't budge! I had to chuck an eraser at him to wake him up!"

That must've been some throw.

No wonder Dio was—wait, that wasn't the point!

Locke straightened, stunned.

This was way out of character. Dio might skip a boring class to hit the library, but falling asleep in the middle of physics—his favorite subject? No way.

"Good job, Clark," Locke said, ruffling the boy's hair again. "Keep me posted on stuff like this."

"Got it!"

With a happy chirp, Clark skipped toward the door. "I'm gonna help Mom get ready for tomorrow's birthday party! Night, Uncle Locke!"

After seeing Clark off, Locke stood in the trashed living room, lost in thought.

Normally, he'd let Dio slide. The kid was always at the top of his class; staying up late reading was par for the course.

But…

His gaze drifted to the unconscious Wolverine on the couch.

Nope. Locke could keep his cool as a guy, but as a dad? Not a chance.

"Gotta have a serious talk with that little punk," he muttered.

Tiptoeing upstairs, he paused outside Dio's door.

"Dio?" Locke eased it open. "Dad needs to talk—"

His words froze.

The sight in the room made his blood run cold.

Dio was sprawled on the bed, surrounded by rippling green energy.

His eyes were shut tight, and The World was… sitting at the desk?!

Scritch, scritch, scritch!

With a physics textbook open, The World was furiously scribbling complex equations in a notebook—with a pen that had no ink!

And all of this…

Dio was doing it unconsciously!

Holy crap, The World's sneaking in extra studying behind Star Platinum's back!

"What the…"

Locke instinctively summoned Star Platinum. "Dio! Wake up!"

Bang!

The World vanished, the pen clattering onto the desk.

"Dad, what the heck?" Dio groaned, rubbing sleepy eyes, his red pupils flashing with annoyance. His blond bangs stuck out in a messy halo, and his pajama collar was crooked, revealing a scar on his collarbone and the star-shaped birthmark on his shoulder.

Locke stood by the bed, swallowing hard.

"Dio…" He kept his voice steady. "You been sleeping a lot lately?"

The teen's face froze, then he rolled his eyes. "Ugh, it was Clark, wasn't it? That traitor!"

"Tomorrow, I'm turning his secret base's coordinates into a poster for the whole town!"

"That's not the point, son." Locke ruffled Dio's hair, choosing his words carefully. "What just happened—you really didn't feel anything?"

"?"

Three giant question marks practically materialized above Dio's head. "Feel what? I was sleeping!"

"Well…" Locke tested the waters. "Were you dreaming?"

"Nope."

Dio scratched his tangled blond hair. "Been sleeping like a rock lately. Out cold till morning."

"Dad, why are you freaking out in the middle of the night?"

"Alright."

Locke took a deep breath. "Call out The World. Let me see it."

"Huh?!"

Dio's face looked like he'd just heard the most ridiculous request in the universe.

"You woke me up in the middle of the night to check out my Stand?"

Grumbling, he snapped his fingers anyway.

The golden Stand appeared, glowing softly in the dim room.

Locke leaned in, Star Platinum's microscope-like precision letting him catch every detail of The World's form.

And there it was…

On the right shoulder, at the seam of The World's armor…

A faint, green-glowing diamond-shaped crystal mark—

Kryptonite?!
