Chapter 116 - chapter 116: The Serpent’s Shadow and the Tiger’s Heart

[the following day]

The morning following the Chimera manifestation was draped in a deceptive stillness. The palace staff moved in hushed tones, the air still humming with the residual mana of the previous night's chaos. Inside the Royal Nursery, the sun fought through the heavy Northern clouds, casting long, pale fingers across the polished wood floors.

Aiden was the first to arrive. He hadn't slept well. the scent of Lorcan's heat and the memory of the scuffle with the Southern King still lingered in his mind. But the rumors coming from the guards and the frantic whispers of the nurses had pulled him toward the twins' room before he even had breakfast.

He burst through the door, his eyes wide. "Is it true? Did he really turn into a cat? A cat with snake eyes?"

Aiden skidded to a halt beside the large, fur lined bed. Calix was tucked into the corner, his small frame almost entirely swallowed by Kenzo. Since the night before, Calix hadn't let go of his twin. He was currently clinging to Kenzo's torso like a literal koala, his legs, one wrapped in white bandages—clamped around Kenzo's waist and his arms locked behind his brother's neck.

"Kenzo, move! I want to see!" Aiden demanded, though his voice was filled with more excitement than authority. "The guards said he glowed. They said he looked like the Serpent King's eyes on a tiger's body. Calix! How did you do it? Did it hurt? Can you do it again? Do you feel like a tiger right now?"

Calix peeked over Kenzo's shoulder, his amber eyes blinking slowly. He didn't say a word. He just gave a tiny, non committal shrug, burying his face back into Kenzo's neck.

"He's tired, Aiden," Kenzo grumbled, his Alpha scent of pine and sugar flaring protectively. "And his leg hurts. Leave him alone."

"I just want to know if he has claws!" Aiden persisted, leaning in close. "Lorc said mana shifters can sometimes communicate with animals. Calix, did you hear the tigers in the garden? Did they tell you secrets? Do you have scales under your fur? Are you a boy tiger or a girl tiger?"

Calix let out a soft, huffing sigh against Kenzo's skin. He tightened his grip, his small fingers digging into Kenzo's shirt. He didn't know the answers to Aiden's questions. He didn't even know how it happened. It had just been a surge of fear, a snap of mana, and then the world had become very large and very fuzzy. To Calix, the transformation was a frightening loss of self, not a cool trick to be displayed.

"Go away, Aiden," Kenzo snapped, though he was secretly enjoying being Calix's sole anchor. "He's staying with me today. No questions."

Aiden boo quietly letting his hands fall back at his side .

Calix looked around and raise his head . " where is Celine?" Calix whispered quietly, while looking up at his brother .

"She…she locked herself in her room I suppose." Aiden said ,looking towards the nursery door .

While the boys were huddled together, Celine was nowhere to be found.

The Alpha Princess was locked in her own room at the end of the hall. The usually pristine chamber was a mess of crumpled papers and discarded toys. Celine sat in the center of her bed, her knees pulled to her chest, her face red and swollen from hours of silent crying.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the Southern King's boot. She heard the sound of Calix's bone snapping.

I sent him there, she thought, a fresh wave of sobs racking her small frame. I told him to go. I was the Alpha. I should have gone. I should have protected them both.

Celine had always prided herself on being the strongest, the one who took charge while Aiden was busy with his training. But her first command had resulted in her brother being ankle broken. The guilt was a heavy, acidic weight in her stomach, making her feel small and useless.

*knock knock*

A soft, rhythmic scraping sound at her door made her freeze.

"Go away!" she yelled, her voice cracking. "I don't want to see anyone!"

The door creaked open slowly. Because of his broken ankle, Calix couldn't walk, but he had refused to stay in bed once he sensed Celine's distress through their sibling bond. He had crawled and hopped his way down the hall, with Kenzo hovering anxiously behind him like a shadow.

Calix shuffled into the room, his bandaged leg dragging slightly. He didn't say anything , he rarely did—but he climbed onto Celine's bed with a painful grunt.

"Calix?" Celine gasped, wiping her eyes frantically. "You shouldn't be here! Your leg—"

Calix didn't let her finish. He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against hers. He offered her a tiny, shy smile—that angelic look that always made the palace staff stop in their tracks. It was a look of pure, unadulterated forgiveness.

"Don't cry, 'Line," Calix whispered, his voice shaking but sweet. "I'm okay. See?"

He reached out a small hand and patted her cheek. Celine's composure shattered. She surged forward, wrapping her arms around Calix, careful not to touch his leg.

"I'm so sorry," she wailed into his shoulder. "I'll never let anyone hurt you again. I promise! I'll be the best Alpha ever!"

Kenzo stood in the doorway, watching them. He let out a huff of relief, his own tension finally breaking. He walked over and joined the pile, the three of them sitting in a tangle of limbs and furs, a unified front against the world outside.

While the children were mending their bonds, a different kind of alliance was being forged in the King's Private Study.

Lily, Arion's sister, stood before her brother with a poise that was both elegant and unnerving. She had spent the morning preparing her argument, knowing that Arion was currently vulnerable, his heart raw from the near loss of his children.

"Arion, look at the facts," Lily said, her voice smooth as polished marble. "The South tried to steal a Prince. Calix has manifested a power that is...volatile. He is shy, he is frightened, and he is falling behind in his formal education because he hides in the library."

Arion rubbed his temples. He looked exhausted. "He's five, Lily. He has time to learn."

"He doesn't have the luxury of time," Lily countered, leaning over the desk. "He is a Triple Crown heir with the mana of a Chimera. If he cannot control his mind, his body will continue to betray him. He needs a mentor who understands the Northern discipline but has the patience for his... unique temperament."

She smiled, a warm, false expression. "I want to help. Let me be his personal mentor. I will teach him his letters, his history, and the etiquette required of a Prince. More importantly, I will teach him how to sit in a room without wanting to vanish. I am family, Arion. Who better to guide him?"

Arion hesitated. He remembered Lily as a fierce warrior, but she had always been a bit distant. However, the idea of Calix having a structured environment where he could gain confidence was tempting. He was worried about Calix's silence, about the way he clung to Kenzo as if the world were made of glass.

"He is very sensitive, Lily," Arion warned. "He doesn't like strangers. He doesn't like being touched."

"I know," Lily said softly, her eyes glinting with a hidden hunger. "I will be gentle. I will start with simple reading and writing. We will build a bond of trust. Please, brother. Let me do this for the family."

Arion finally sighed, a long, weary sound. "Fine. You may begin his lessons. But if he cries, if he feels pressured... it ends. Understood?"

"Understood," Lily purred, a triumphant chill running down her spine.

As she left the room, she didn't head for her own quarters. She walked toward the nursery, her mind already calculating the best way to peel Calix away from Kenzo's side. She didn't want to teach him etiquette, she wanted to see exactly what triggered the snake eyed tiger.

Later that afternoon, Lily entered the nursery. The scene was peaceful: Aiden was showing Lorcan (who was still resting) a new combat move, and the Triad was huddled on the rug.

"Calix, dear," Lily said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Your Papa has agreed that you and I shall spend some time together. We are going to learn the secret language of books."

Calix froze. His grip on Kenzo, which had loosened during their play, immediately tightened. He climbed onto Kenzo's back, wrapping his arms around his twin's neck and his legs around his waist—a perfect koala cling.

"No," Kenzo said firmly, his eyes narrowing at his aunt. "He's busy."

"It's just for an hour, Kenzo," Lily said, stepping closer.

Calix buried his face in the crook of Kenzo's neck, a small, distressed whimper escaping him. To him, Lily's scent wasn't like his parents'—it didn't smell of rain or pine. It smelled of cold iron and old dust.

"He doesn't want to!" Celine barked, standing up and blocking Lily's path. "He has a broken leg! He has to stay with us!"

Aiden looked up from his conversation with Lorcan. "Yeah, Aunt Lily. Why now? We're supposed to tell stories."

Lily's smile didn't waver, but her eyes turned cold. "Education doesn't wait for stories, children. Calix, come. Don't make me tell your father you are being difficult."

Calix trembled against Kenzo. He looked at Aiden, then at Celine, and finally at his twin. He didn't want to go, but the mention of "Papa" made him feel a surge of duty. Slowly, painfully, he unwound himself from Kenzo.

"It's okay," Calix whispered to Kenzo, his voice tiny. "I'll... I'll be back."

As Lily led the limping boy away, Kenzo and Celine stood side by side, a feeling of unease settling over them.

"I don't like her," Kenzo muttered.

"Neither do I," Celine agreed, her Alpha scent turning sharp. "We're watching her, Kenzo. Every second."
