Chapter 78 - 78

When Agent Li Chengfeng arrived on the Airbus via the portal, they were already nearing Peru, so there wasn't much time left.

The Airbus belonging to the Coulson Team eventually flew over a vast dense forest and then landed on the flat ground outside the forest.

Then, they drove the Federal Bureau of Investigation's custom-made off-road vehicles towards the pre-determined coordinates.

Agent Li Chengfeng didn't directly open a portal; after all, the Coulson Team wouldn't always be on missions with him, so getting used to the convenience of portals wasn't a good thing for them.

Besides...

It's a rare opportunity for an international trip on public expense; shouldn't they enjoy the scenery?

After about an hour's drive, they arrived at their destination.

This was an excavation site of an Inca civilization ruin.

Agent Li Chengfeng first went into the surrounding woods and circled around, confirming there were no traces of large creatures before nodding for everyone to start their work.

Fitz and Jemma got out of the car, chatting and laughing, after gathering all their tools.

"Oh, Jemma, is this the South American Bushmaster you mentioned on the plane?"

Hearing this, Fitz and Jemma immediately turned their heads and saw a yellowish-brown venomous snake coiled around Agent Li Chengfeng's beautifully muscled forearm. This ugly creature was indeed a South American Bushmaster, and it was desperately biting Agent Li Chengfeng's hand.

However, Agent Li Chengfeng's physical strength was still there; a snake's fangs simply couldn't break his defense.

"OMG? Is it fun to have a venomous snake wrapped around your hand!? And this snake is biting you!"

"Don't say that, it actually feels a little ticklish. It seems this little guy really likes me."

Agent Li Chengfeng said, uncoiling the snake from his wrist.

Then he swung his arm and threw the snake back into the dense forest.

Snake: I really thank you, you bastard!

After Jemma saw Agent Li Chengfeng throw the snake away, she came over to check Agent Li Chengfeng's wrist. Although she knew it couldn't break Agent Li Chengfeng's defense, those venomous fluids belonging to the South American Bushmaster were dripping from his hand onto the ground.

Jemma quickly took out high-concentration disinfectant and cleaned Agent Li Chengfeng's hand.

"Uh, Jemma, although I know being careful is good, these snake venoms really don't affect me. I could even drink them and be fine."

"Agent Li Chengfeng, I certainly know it's useless against you." Jemma Simmons sighed, "But if the venom isn't dealt with, I'm afraid other team members might get affected. Clean it up quickly, lest you cause trouble for us."

"Agent Jemma Simmons, as your leader, I must say something! You weren't like this with me before! Give back that adoration for the celebrity Agents, you bastards!"

Fitz and Jemma both rolled their eyes at Agent Li Chengfeng, too lazy to continue bothering with this young senior Agent.

They turned and walked into the nearby Inca temple ruins. This ancient temple, hidden in the dense forest, had existed for at least five hundred years and was where the 084 item was detected this time.

Agent Li Chengfeng followed Jemma and Fitz into the Inca temple. After the two conducted the most detailed on-site survey, they reached a conclusion.

"Everything inside is an antique, all from the Inca generations, or even before the Inca generations." Fitz pointed to something on the wall that clearly didn't look like a product of ancient civilization and said, "But this thing, I think anyone with a normal IQ wouldn't believe it should be here."

"Inside the fossilized rock layer just excavated from the innermost part of the temple, there's an unidentified object with an orderly mechanical structure embedded within it?" Jemma chimed in, "What does this mean? It means it has been here for at least nearly fifteen hundred years, longer than the temple itself has existed!"

"...But from the manufacturing process, it looks a bit like it's made in Germany."

Agent Li Chengfeng watched the Science Babies Duo discussing excitedly and decided to go out for some fresh air.

He possessed Captain Cold's genius-level mechanical engineering expertise and could tell at a glance that this was likely an energy emitter.

However, having knowledge is one thing; he's not fundamentally a person for scientific research and technology.

"Mei, have you eaten?"

As soon as Agent Li Chengfeng walked out of the ancient temple ruins, he saw Melinda May, who had just parked the car in a hidden spot.

Of course, he spoke in Chinese. Being able to communicate in Chinese outside the Republic was a happy thing.

"You should use greetings like that on others."

"My bad, my bad... Oh, have you and Fury told Steve Rogers about the existence of Captain Carter?"

"Not yet. Rogers has only just begun to integrate normally into this current era. Let's not provoke him yet. After some time, I will first take him to meet our Peggy Carter. She has been... relatively lucid lately."

When mentioning Peggy Carter from this timeline, Melinda May's usually expressionless poker face showed a rare hint of sadness.

Agent Li Chengfeng immediately stared at Melinda May warily.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" Melinda May subconsciously touched her face, "Is there something on my face?"

"No, I thought that in that situation, you would say that essential line for Federal Bureau of Investigation Agents." Agent Li Chengfeng said with lingering fear, "'Peggy Carter is the closest thing to a mother you've ever had in your life'... or something like that. Believe me, I've been hearing sentences like that so much lately I'm almost having an allergic reaction."

"Uh, I have birth parents."

"Thanks to your birth parents, your configuration of having both parents is already winning too much."

As Agent Li Chengfeng spoke, he suddenly made several tactical hand gestures specific to Federal Bureau of Investigation Agents.

Melinda May immediately understood.

The two moved separately towards the thick bushes on either side.

Then, both of them acted simultaneously, pulling several armed individuals from the bushes.

They were all fully armed soldiers.

Agent Li Chengfeng had spotted them ever since he arrived at the perimeter of this Inca ruin, but he was too lazy to alert them.

He was always the type to catch them all at once.

Now, he signaled Melinda May to act because the enemy's personnel had almost finished gathering.

Melinda May and Agent Li Chengfeng instantly knocked down the soldiers in front of them. At the same time, several military off-road vehicles suddenly drove up from all directions.

Dozens of equally fully armed soldiers aimed their guns at the two.

"Holy crap, I just went to pee, and suddenly there's a big magic trick with live people?"

And Oliver Queen, Wade Wilson, and Steve Rogers suddenly emerged from the dense forest where the soldiers were.

Agent Li Chengfeng spread his hands, indicating he didn't know either.

All five people present were experienced Agents. They simply exchanged glances and decided on their next course of action.

Five people surrounding dozens of people, very reasonable.

Then they vividly performed a grand show of "a tiger entering a flock of sheep."

Soon, dozens of people who had completely lost their combat ability lay on the ground.

"I heard there's a group of anti-government rebels in Peru right now. It wouldn't be them, would it?" Wade Wilson put away his twin swords and said somewhat flippantly.

"No, well-equipped, well-trained. These dozens of people would be excellent soldiers in any country, clearly the government's regular army." Oliver Queen observed very carefully, "But why are they ambushing us? We've already notified the Peru officials this time!"

"What happened?"

Coulson and Barry Allen walked out of the Inca ruins, their expressions changing drastically as they saw the Peruvian government troops lying on the ground.

"A squad of government soldiers inexplicably attacked us… Don't worry, only non-lethal methods were used, so there's no need to fear causing an international dispute."

Steve Rogers's words reassured Coulson.

But what happened next made him spit out the reassurance he had just swallowed.

Because very soon, someone he was once very familiar with appeared.

About twenty seconds after the battle ended, Peruvian military police Commander Camila Reyes rushed over, and all she saw were soldiers groaning on the ground.

And Agent Li Chengfeng, who seemed to be waiting for someone.

"Who are you?!" Camila Reyes was greatly alarmed, "What happened to my soldiers?"

"I am Agent Li Chengfeng, a Level Seven Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. My team is here for a matter concerning international security."

Li Chengfeng's expression was calm; after all, he knew exactly who the other party was.

The cat-and-mouse game never gets old.

No sooner had he finished speaking than some of the regular army soldiers lying on the ground slowly began to regain consciousness, struggling to let out faint groans.

Frankly, they had definitely held back, otherwise, even with non-lethal force, they wouldn't have woken up so quickly.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation?" This woman, Camila Reyes, had good acting skills; her feigned confusion looked flawless, "I am Camila Reyes, Commander of the Peruvian Military Police. Your actions within my country's territory require an explanation."

"As you wish, Commander Camila Reyes." Li Chengfeng nodded, pointing to the Inca ruins behind him, "We detected the presence of an 084 item within this Inca ruin in Peru. As the Commander of the Military Police, you should know that according to the international convention signed by Peru, 084 items are to be contained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and do not belong to the country where they are found."

Seeing that Camila Reyes still wanted to say something, Coulson walked over from behind and waved at her.

"Hmm? Phil?"

"Camila." Coulson said with a smile, stepping forward to speak to his old acquaintance, "How many years has it been since we last met? You've actually been promoted to Commander."

"Actually, it was three years ago. Phil, now we should properly greet each other."

With that, Camila Reyes and Coulson shared a close cheek kiss.

Damn it! Another one of Coulson's old flames!

So what charm does this bald guy have that makes these elegant older women still so fond of him?

But this brat Li Chengfeng is very mischievous; he just loves to interrupt people when they're exuding an ambiguous aura.

"You are Commander Camila of the Peruvian government? Very good, now I have some questions that I need you to answer."

"Oh, Phil." Camila Reyes shook her head, "Your Agents are excellent, but they lack respect for people."

"Camila, I think you misunderstood. Although he stands here, in reality, not only is he not my subordinate, but in some sense, his position and importance are even above mine." Coulson's expression instantly shifted from meeting an old flame to being all business, "Although Agent Li Chengfeng is very casual, he never questions strangers without reason, so… I think you'd best answer his questions honestly."

Camila frowned slightly. Damn The Clairvoyant, how could there be no information about such an important person?

The situation was urgent, and she could only go along with it.

After Li Chengfeng saw Camila nod in agreement, he asked:

"Given the current situation of mutual conflict between the Peruvian government forces and the rebels, how does Commander have time to meet an old flame here? Or does Peru now have the technology to detect 084 items? Is that why so many elite soldiers were deployed here?"

"…Actually, we were searching for rebels; encountering you was just an accident."

"Your mouth is as hard as a rock! Let me answer for you." Li Chengfeng walked between Camila Reyes and Coulson and whispered, "The Clairvoyant told you that Agent Coulson would lead a team to retrieve the 084 item today, right? He said it was a weapon that could be used to end Peru's civil unrest. But… an obstacle that must be eliminated has appeared before you."

Upon hearing this, Camila Reyes's expression changed drastically. She quietly pulled away, her gaze at Coulson filled with complexity and determination.

Coulson was equally shocked, but he was surprised by the woman's ruthlessness.

"So… when did you plan to discard our past feelings?"

"…The moment I saw your team."

"Should I thank you for not deciding when you received the intelligence?"

Camila Reyes shook her head helplessly and decisively pressed the button on her communication device.

Immediately, the roar of more car engines could be heard from a distance.

The number of people perfectly matched what Li Chengfeng had discovered during his initial patrol; the other side had indeed gone all out.

"Subdue the Federal Bureau of Investigation Agents, seize the 084 item!" Camila Reyes ordered coldly, then said to Coulson, "I'm sorry, Phil, but between you and my country, I have to make a difficult choice. Don't worry, as long as you don't resist, I won't harm you, and after eliminating the rebels, I will surrender to the International Military Tribunal and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

"Is that so…"

Coulson nodded. By now, he understood that things were already irreversible…

So he turned and walked towards the mountain…

Ptooey! Ptooey! He turned and walked towards the Inca ruins.

"Team, listen up, try not to kill anyone."

"It's your team now, so I'll listen to you."

His old flame showed no old affection, but Coulson still softened.

Actually, he wasn't a bleeding heart; if the other party had evil intentions, he would not hesitate to shoot and kill.

But whether it was Camila Reyes or these soldiers, they were merely desperate to save their country and chose to take a risk.

Coulson truly couldn't bring himself to harm such people.

This was also his most humane side.

After all, Black Egg is unparalleled in calculation and decisive in killing, but would anyone truly like this Black Egg?
