The grimoires that Marcus Dane produced from hidden compartments throughout the workshop were unlike anything Constantine had encountered in his original reality. Where DC's infernal texts were chaotic artifacts of power and corruption, Marvel's demonological literature read like corporate organizational charts crossed with military intelligence reports.

"The Hell-Lord hierarchies operate more like a cosmic bureaucracy than the anarchic free-for-all you might expect," Marcus explained, spreading an intricate chart across the workshop's main table. "Each major Hell-Lord controls specific dimensional realms and operates according to carefully negotiated territorial agreements."

Constantine studied the chart, noting names and power structures that were both familiar and alien. "Mephisto, Dormammu, Satannish I recognize some of these from my research, but the relationships between them are completely different from what I expected."

Professor Walsh leaned over the chart, her academic expertise providing context for the complex web of alliances and rivalries. "Marvel's Hell-Lords evolved from different mythological traditions than their DC counterparts. They're more organized, more strategic in their approach to mortal manipulation." She pointed to a section of the chart showing interconnected spheres of influence. "They also tend to honor agreements and contracts more consistently, viewing betrayal as poor business practice rather than inevitable outcome."

"Mephisto sits at the top of the primary hierarchy," Marcus continued, his experience as a former Hell-Lord providing insider knowledge. "He's the most powerful, the most cunning, and the most interested in expanding his influence into other dimensional frameworks." The former demon's expression grew serious. "He's also been monitoring your situation since your arrival, John. Your chaos magic techniques represent exactly the kind of reality manipulation that interests entities at his level."

Brother Voodoo had been communing with the loa throughout the discussion, his spiritual connections providing additional intelligence about the supernatural crisis. "The spirits whisper warnings about Mephisto's interest in Constantine. They say the Hell-Lord sees opportunity in the dimensional instabilities, a chance to extend his influence beyond traditional boundaries."

Dr. Chen was coordinating with federal response teams through her communication device, but Constantine could see the strain on her face as she tried to translate supernatural crisis into language that government bureaucracy could process. "The Department is tracking increasing supernatural incidents across a fifty-state radius. Whatever the Devourer's approach is doing to local dimensional barriers, the effects are spreading."

Constantine lit another cigarette, his mind racing through the implications of what he was learning about Marvel's infernal politics. "So Mephisto is the primary power, but he operates within a system of negotiated agreements rather than pure domination. That means he has rivals, competitors who might be very interested in preventing him from gaining access to multiversal chaos magic techniques."

"Exactly," Marcus confirmed. "Dormammu controls the Dark Dimension and has significant influence over other Hell-Lords through his creation Satannish. He's Mephisto's primary rival and would likely view any expansion of Mephisto's power as a direct threat to his own position."

Wanda, who had been maintaining her connection to Constantine's chaos magic throughout the discussion, suddenly stiffened as new information flooded through their mystical link. "Something's changed," she said urgently. "The Devourer it's not approaching alone anymore. It's bringing allies, other entities that exist in the spaces between realities."

The stranger, who had been watching the planning session with obvious amusement, finally spoke up. "Ah yes, the Devourer's collection of multiversal fragments has given it the ability to negotiate with beings from various dimensional frameworks. Quite the diplomatic entity, despite its rather unfortunate dietary habits."

Constantine felt the trap closing around them with renewed urgency. If the Devourer was bringing allies, then his plan to pit Hell-Lords against a single entity would need significant revision. "What kind of allies are we talking about?"

"Entities that have been displaced from their home realities, creatures that exist in dimensional exile because they've been banished or escaped from cosmic prisons." The stranger's smile carried depths of satisfaction that made Constantine's skin crawl. "The Devourer has been offering them a very appealing bargain access to a reality with weakened dimensional barriers, a universe they could potentially colonize or corrupt according to their particular appetites."

Professor Walsh was frantically consulting additional texts, her scholarly expertise racing to provide context for threats that existed outside normal academic categories. "Multiversal refugees and exiles the theoretical literature suggests such entities would be incredibly dangerous precisely because they operate outside established cosmic hierarchies. No treaties, no negotiated boundaries, no agreed-upon limitations on their behavior."

"Which is exactly why Mephisto would oppose them," Marcus said with growing excitement. "Hell-Lords maintain their power through careful political balance and negotiated territorial control. A flood of chaotic entities from other realities would destabilize the entire system."

Brother Voodoo was nodding slowly, his connection to the loa providing confirmation of Marcus's analysis. "The spirits speak of great anger in the infernal realms, of Hell-Lords preparing for war against threats that do not honor the ancient agreements. They say Mephisto himself has taken notice of the dimensional instabilities, and his attention has focused on the source."

Constantine felt a chill run down his spine that had nothing to do with the October weather. "He knows about me specifically?"

"More than that," Wanda said, her face pale as new information flowed through their mystical connection. "He's been monitoring your chaos magic development, evaluating your potential as either ally or threat." Her voice carried undertones of alien intelligence that made Constantine's borrowed soul recoil. "John, he wants to meet with you. Directly."

The workshop fell silent except for the distant sounds of mystical alarms continuing to wail across Manhattan. Constantine realized that his desperate plan to manipulate Hell-Lord politics had just become significantly more dangerous and potentially more effective.

"A direct meeting with Mephisto," Dr. Chen said, her government training providing context for the diplomatic implications. "That's either an incredible opportunity or a death trap disguised as negotiation."

"Both," Marcus replied grimly. "Mephisto doesn't grant audiences to entities he considers beneath his notice. The fact that he's interested in direct contact suggests he sees Constantine as either a valuable potential asset or a threat significant enough to require personal attention."

Constantine looked around at the assembled supernatural authorities, noting the way they were all watching him with expressions that ranged from concern to calculation. They understood that his decision would have consequences that extended far beyond personal survival.

"Where would this meeting take place?" Constantine asked, though he suspected he wouldn't like the answer.

"Mephisto's personal realm," Wanda replied, her connection to otherworldly intelligence providing details that made everyone in the workshop tense. "A dimension that exists according to his will alone, where he possesses absolute power over every aspect of reality." Her voice grew strained as she channeled additional information. "He offers safe passage and guaranteed return, but only if you come alone and unarmed of mystical defenses."

The stranger laughed with obvious delight. "How perfectly Mephistophelean. Offer the one thing John Constantine can't resist a chance to negotiate with a being far more powerful than himself, with stakes high enough to matter and risks sufficient to make the game interesting."

Constantine felt the familiar thrill of impossible odds combining with desperate necessity. This was exactly the kind of situation he'd built his reputation on walking into obvious traps with nothing but cunning and audacity, then somehow emerging with victories that shouldn't have been possible.

"I'll need backup plans," Constantine said, already beginning to formulate strategies for surviving a meeting with one of Marvel's most powerful Hell-Lords. "Multiple escape routes, contingency protocols, and insurance policies that Mephisto doesn't know about."

Brother Voodoo stepped forward, his connection to the spirit world providing insights that transcended normal magical knowledge. "The loa offer guidance for one who walks between worlds. They say the Laughing Magician's greatest strength has always been his ability to find humor in impossible situations, to see opportunities where others see only doom."

Professor Walsh was gathering specific texts that dealt with infernal negotiations and demonic contract law. "The theoretical framework suggests that Hell-Lords operate according to very specific rules when dealing with mortals. If you understand those rules, you can navigate even the most dangerous negotiations safely."

Marcus's predatory smile had returned with genuine appreciation for the audacity of Constantine's plan. "I can provide intelligence about Mephisto's negotiating style, his preferred contract structures, and the kinds of deals he's most likely to find appealing." The former Hell-Lord's expression grew serious. "But I should warn you he's been preparing for this meeting longer than you realize. Mephisto doesn't grant audiences without having already calculated multiple ways to benefit from the encounter."

Constantine nodded, understanding the implications but feeling the pull of inevitability that marked truly important decisions. The Devourer was approaching with multiversal allies, dimensional barriers were continuing to weaken, and chaos magic was spreading through Marvel's reality in ways that threatened cosmic stability.

Meeting with Mephisto was dangerous beyond calculation, but it might be the only chance to forge an alliance powerful enough to address threats that existed outside normal dimensional frameworks.

As he prepared for a journey into Hell itself, Constantine couldn't shake the feeling that somewhere in the depths of his borrowed soul, the real John Constantine was laughing with grim satisfaction at the familiar impossibility of it all.

Time to see if charm, cunning, and catastrophic audacity worked the same way in Marvel's Hell as they had everywhere else.
