Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The World Is Neither Black Nor White

"So you're the one who's..." The boss, who was named Kiran, had just arrived and was about to insult Morin, but the chubby police officer next to him stopped him.

The chubby police officer, named Brand, could tell at a glance that Morin was not an ordinary person. As a "veteran" police officer, being able to observe and make a preliminary judgment about people's backgrounds was a very important skill.

This was to prevent accidentally provoking someone you couldn't afford to mess with and then getting into a lot of trouble.

The moment he saw Morin, Brand knew that regardless of whether this person was an IRS special agent or not, it was best not to provoke him.

"Mister, I'm Officer Brand from the Langley City Police Department," the chubby officer said, extending his hand. "After receiving a citizen's report, I've come here and need to see your credentials."

"Since when do the police handle these kinds of things?" Morin said without looking up.

Just then, his game of Snake finally filled the entire screen. After eating the last bit of food in the final gap, the snake grew by one more block, leaving no more space to move, and it died.

"But," Morin put down his phone and handed his badge over. "Go ahead and look. As a matter of fact, you can verify for them whether this badge is real or not."

"Okay..." Brand's heart sank. Morin's attitude made him almost completely believe him. When a police officer shows up and asks for credentials, if a thief or a liar still stubbornly insists they're not a thief instead of running, aren't they just an idiot?

Of course, there might be some who are holding out hope, but the possibility is very small. You can never imagine how many things exist in reality that are too absurd to be written in a novel.

However, after checking, Brand completely believed him. They had their own methods for distinguishing real from fake badges, and no matter how he tested it, Brand had to conclude that all of Morin's credentials were real and valid. In other words, his friend was in big trouble.

The IRS's reputation was known to all in America.

After concluding that the documents were all valid, Brand's attitude instantly became more respectful. He honestly returned all the documents to Morin.

Seeing this, the boss and clerk were completely terrified. They were in deep trouble!

"Well, since that's the case, if you have no objections," Morin said, raising an eyebrow. "I..."

"Sir!" Brand still spoke up. He didn't want to see his old friend lose everything. Although this matter had nothing to do with him, since he was here, it didn't feel right to just stand by and watch.

"I think there might be another way to resolve this?"

"Oh?" A smile appeared on Morin's face. He looked at Brand. "I'm listening."

"You see, even if you do shut down this store completely, you'll at most get a bonus, and you might not even get anything at all, since it's just a small phone store," Brand said, wiping the sweat from his forehead and leaning in close.

"If you choose not to report this, maybe Kiran can offer you a more generous compensation..."

"I see. You're trying to bribe me?" Morin said with a smile.

"No, no, of course not!" Brand quickly shook his head. "This is just us becoming friends, and as a friend, we're giving you a small gift..."

"Yes, yes, just a gift, just a gift!" Kiran, the boss, quickly chimed in.

"Is that so..." Morin pretended to be deep in thought and nodded. "Since it's a gift, how much do you think is appropriate? Ten thousand dollars?"

"Ten thousand dollars?" Kiran's eyes went wide.

"Ten thousand dollars to become friends with me, isn't that a good deal?" Morin retorted.

"Let me guess, all your assets... are probably worth more than ten thousand dollars, right?"

The implied meaning was clear.

"I..." Kiran was so angry he wanted to spit blood, but after seeing Brand frantically motioning with his eyes, he could only swallow his pride and say, "That's a very good deal!"

The tone of his voice was very strong, especially when he said "good," as if he wanted to swallow Morin whole.

"Well, in that case, that's great. I can't believe I've made another friend so quickly," Morin said, smiling and nodding, performing with exaggerated words. "So, my friend... where's my 'gift'?"

Ten thousand dollars was a price that was neither too high nor too low. It was enough to make the boss feel a pinch but still be able to come up with it, and it was also enough for Morin to verify something.

A moment later, Morin counted the money in his hand, nodded with satisfaction, and left the phone store. His [IRS Employee] profession's experience points had successfully increased by one.

This validated the conclusion Morin had reached as long as the reward was obtained through that profession, whether it was legitimate income or gray income, it would be counted toward his experience points!

Before this, when he was in the Fast and Furious world, Morin had already noticed some small details.

For example, before he had fully established his businesses, he once modified a car for a Middle Eastern millionaire. The millionaire, in his happiness, gave him an extra ten thousand dollars as a tip.

That ten thousand dollars was also counted toward his experience points. From then on, Morin began to suspect that as long as it was a reward, whether it was a legitimate reward, a tip, or even gray income, it could be counted toward his experience points.

Later, Morin conducted a series of tests and finally came to some conclusions:

Legitimate rewards could be negotiated, such as for costs, labor fees, etc. As long as the other party was not forced to trade with him (for example, by using violence), the full amount would be counted in the experience points.Extra rewards like tips and bonuses could also be counted in the experience points, but the other party could not be forced to give it to him in any way. Otherwise, it would not be counted, and the total amount could not exceed the original agreed-upon compensation.

However, regarding gray income... what gray income could a mechanic have? Morin wasn't an employee; he was the boss!

So, it wasn't until just now that Morin had the opportunity to try out whether professional gray income could be counted toward his experience points.

The final result was very pleasing. The world is neither black nor white, but a delicate shade of gray. Morin guessed that this was why gray income could also be counted toward his experience points!

Of course, Morin also understood that there would also be rules and limitations for gray income. However, he would have to wait until later to continue experimenting and exploring.
