The ringing of the phone startled Eric from his thoughts. He looked at the screen and saw an unfamiliar number.
"Hello?" Eric answered the phone.
"You're looking for me?" The voice from the other end of the line, a voice Eric remembered very well, made him jolt.
The feeling of his life being completely in someone else's hands, Eric had never experienced it before.
So, naturally, he remembered the owner of this voice very clearly.
"Mr. Morin," Eric quickly said in a respectful tone. "I'm looking for you for some private matters."
"Private matters?"
"Yes. If you are willing, we can meet and discuss it in person. That might be better."
Eric said, "If you can't get away or don't trust me, you can choose the location and time. I can come alone."
"Alright, then. The location, your office. The time, now," Morin said with a soft laugh. "Now, open the door."
"" Eric was speechless for a moment.
It wasn't until there were three gentle knocks on his office door that Eric reacted. He jumped up and cautiously went to open the door.
"Mr. Morin Morin?"
Opening the door, Eric was momentarily stunned to find Morin actually standing there. He looked behind and to the side of Morin, but saw none of his own men following.
So, how did Morin get in?
Were his men dead?
Did they just let a person in without even announcing it?
Eric wasn't unhappy with Morin; he was just thinking that if Morin could walk up to him so silently and unnoticed, could other assassins do the same?
Thinking about this, Eric had the urge to replace all of his security guards.
"Don't worry. While I did walk in this easily, it would be very difficult for others to do the same," Morin said with a smile. "Are we going to talk by the door?"
"Please come in, please come in, Mr. Morin. I'm sorry, I was just surprised." Eric finally came to his senses, quickly stepped aside, and invited Morin in.
"No need to be surprised. It's just a basic move."
Once they were seated, Morin asked, "You spent such a high price to find me. What for?"
"It's like this, Mr. Morin," Eric quickly put aside the
thought of a security shake-up and focused on the matter at hand.
"I have already held a board meeting and announced that we are changing our drug prices. Once the FDA approves it, this matter will be fully implemented."
"Good," Morin nodded. "And then?"
"But I've thought of a more troublesome issue," Eric said.
"Because after Moderna sent someone to assassinate me I realized that the security guards I've hired seem to be of no use against a hitman."
"I understand," Morin said. "You want me to protect you?"
"Yes, Mr. Morin, you're so smart!" Eric nodded eagerly.
"Previously, I sold legitimate, brand-name drugs, but because of the high price it gave other companies a chance. If I lower the drug prices"
"When faced with a desperate situation, many people will resort to any means necessary," Morin nodded. "I understand what you mean. You're worried that those companies will band together and put a bounty on your head, and so you want me to protect you?"
"Yes!" Eric nodded. "As compensation, I am willing to"
"Wait." Morin stopped Eric's words.
"What?" Eric was startled. "Sir, please, you must help me.
I am willing to"
"No, no, no. I will help you, but we need to rephrase it. Understand?" Morin laughed. "I am a man of principle."
"So?" Eric obviously didn't understand.
"So, you need to ask for my help in a different way," Morin said, lightly tapping the desk with his finger. "I am a Templar. I strive to protect order and fight against assassins and killers who disrupt it."
"So now, Mr. Eric, you, as the CEO and Chairman of the Eric Group, have decided to turn over a new leaf and lower the prices of your drugs to a normal level, thereby upholding order and the law."
"However, your competitorsthose who have already disrupted order and lost their moralswill retaliate against you by any means necessary."
"They will ask the dark minions of the underworld to put a heavy bounty on your head, hiring assassins and killers to murder you, so that they can maintain their own interests and disrupt order."
"For all these reasons, you have come to me, to a Templar, to seek help, because it is the duty of a Templar to fight for the protection of order."
"And as payment for a Templar helping you protect order, you have chosen to pay"
Here, Morin smiled and looked at the stunned Eric. "Mr. Eric?"
"Huh?" Eric snapped out of his daze.
He had never imagined that his transaction with Morin could be elevated to such a level!
It went from a plea for protection out of fear to a noble fight to protect order!
This was a world of difference!
Are you really a Templar?
You're a politician, aren't you? You must be!
Only a politician could so skillfully elevate an originally
trivial matter to such a high level!
Eric was raging with inner thoughts.
"As a witness and petitioner for the matters I just mentioned, what compensation are you willing to pay?"
Morin didn't care what Eric was thinking and continued to ask.
"I am willing to" Eric considered for a moment and then
stated his highest price.
"Whatever bounty they put on me, I will double it as my compensation to you. And, as a testament to our friendly cooperation and our shared goal of protecting order, I am willing to pay an additional one million dollars as an advance!"
Eric was a CEO, after all. He was naturally good at saying the right things!
"You are truly generous, Mr. Eric. The Templars thank you for your contributions to protecting order."
Seeing how cooperative Eric was, Morin was also in a
great mood.
What price would a multinational company CEO have to be worth for the Continental Hotel to put him on their bounty list?
It was foreseeable that it would be a very substantial sum of money.
And with Morin's phrasing, this matter had become the duty of a Templar, and in turn, the compensation Eric paid was all income for the Templar profession!
This meant that before he got to the main course in his plan, Morin could first enjoy a small appetizer from Eric to figure out what kind of enhancements a Templar's profession would give him as it leveled up!
"Then, as a small token of gratitude, in addition to protecting your safety, I will also deal with those despicable individuals who have disrupted order!" Morin said.
"To protect order, I will do my best!"
