"What does this mean?"
Hearing this, Bruce put aside his newly painted suit of armor and walked over to see the newspaper Alfred was holding.
Bruce took the newspaper and immediately saw the striking headline: "New Police Officer Raises a Ruckus at Soros' Bar, Leaves After Injuring Dozens!"
"Soros' Bar?" Bruce looked at Alfred.
"That's territory belonging to Falcone, Gotham's biggest mob boss," Alfred explained.
"And, according to some rumors, the officer is new to the force. After subduing the bar's thugs, he demanded that the owner, one of Falcone's underbosses named Hugh Haas, reveal a list of all the cops on the mob's payroll."
"In front of everyone?"
"In front of everyone."
"He's being foolish," Bruce frowned.
"Yes, but you have to admit, his skills are truly exceptional," Alfred said, pointing to a photo someone had secretly taken. It showed a circle of people lying on the ground.
"It was one man against dozens, and those men were using guns and other weapons. The officer was just in a suit."
"Sounds like a joke," Bruce shook his head. "It doesn't seem like something a person could do. At least, I couldn't."
"What are you going to do?" Alfred asked.
"He's gone too far, and he's too obvious. He'll be targeted... But if his skills are really as strong as the newspaper says, even if it's only half as strong, he's someone worth cooperating with."
Bruce continued, "Alfred, I need you to look up his information for me. Get it as soon as possible. After that, I need to find a chance to talk to him."
"I've already got it." Alfred handed a stack of documents to Bruce.
"Master Wayne, the strange thing is, on this file, all of his documents are real and valid. However, all the people who verified the authenticity of these documents... are dead."
"Sounds like... he's with a legitimate organization," Bruce said, looking at the documents and finding that they were exactly as Alfred had described.
"That's the problem," Alfred said. "Master Wayne, if he really is with one of those agencies, your actions..."
"I'll go find him tonight and get to the bottom of this," Bruce said decisively.
"If he really is with one of those agencies, I can provide intel and coordinate with his operation. If he's just an ordinary person, given his skills, I can try to make him my partner."
...
In the police car, Gordon looked at Morin without saying a word.
"What's wrong?" Morin asked knowingly. "I know I'm handsome, but my orientation is completely normal. Don't get any ideas."
"You know what I want to talk about," Gordon said, ignoring Morin's words and holding a newspaper in front of him.
"What's this all about?"
"What's what all about?" Morin took the newspaper and glanced at it. "Oh, this. It's well written. It's all true."
"I know it's true!" Gordon was on the verge of a breakdown. "But... how could you do something like this?"
"Why not?" Morin shrugged. "I just wanted to go to a bar to relax. Who knew I'd see people openly selling and using drugs? As a police officer, I wanted to arrest them, but they resisted openly, and there were a lot of them, so I had to be a little heavy-handed. What's the problem with that?"
"Not only is there a problem, there's a huge problem," Gordon took a few deep breaths and said,
"That's Falcone's territory! Falcone is the biggest mob boss in Gotham and has deals with the mayor, judges, and the police commissioner! I don't know how you got away, but if he tells Commissioner Loeb about this, you're going to be in big trouble!"
"The way you say that, you'd think Commissioner Loeb would protect a mob boss and punish me," Morin said, deliberately teasing Gordon.
"All those people have taken bribes from the mob! So, they'll definitely do what he says! Otherwise, why do you think almost everyone knows that Falcone's people are smuggling and selling drugs, but no one ever arrests him? It's because his power is so vast, he can easily put someone forward to take the blame, and the judges and police will just turn a blind eye!"
Gordon frustratingly held his head. "I should have told you all this sooner."
"Don't worry," Morin said, seeing that he had teased Gordon enough. He finally got serious and, combining it with the identity he'd given himself last night, began to bluff.
"Do you think I'm some naive young person who doesn't know anything?"
"...What do you mean?" Gordon was taken aback.
"Do you really think someone like me, with my kind of skills, wouldn't know about these things?" Morin smiled.
"I knew that was Falcone's turf, and I knew about the situation in Gotham a long time ago!"
"Then why did you..." Gordon was confused.
"That was what I came to do," Morin said. "My identity needs to be kept a secret. All you need to know is that I'm an agent from a national-level organization, sent here specifically to investigate the situation in Gotham."
"What?" Gordon was shocked. Then he remembered Morin's skills in the alley last night and what the newspaper reported, and he believed most of it. Only a person like that could possibly do such a thing!
"Gordon, I know you're a good cop who doesn't want to get involved with those corrupt, bribed officers, one of the few good cops left," Morin said.
"You can get involved in my operation. In return, I'll help you become the police commissioner, and together, we'll change the situation in Gotham!"
"..." Gordon's mouth hung open, unable to say a word. The amount of information was too much; his brain needed a moment to process.
"...What kind of organization are you with?" Gordon finally asked, a long time later.
"Didn't I say? It's confidential. All you need to know is that I have a very powerful backing."
Morin smiled, patted Gordon on the shoulder, and said, "So, are you going to join the gang... oh, I mean, join my team and work with me?"
...You did say 'join the gang', didn't you? It had to be! How practiced must he be to say something like that so naturally!
"...How many people are on your team right now?" Gordon thought for a moment, deciding to ask for more information first.
"Two," Morin said, holding up his index and middle fingers.
"Just three of us, including me?" Gordon looked bewildered.
"No, two including you," Morin reassured him. "An army's strength isn't in its numbers, but in its quality. Don't worry, with my operation, too many people is a bad thing. Five people or less is enough!"
Five people, of course, was deliberate Morin, Bruce, Gordon, and at most, Fox, who was still just an idle employee in Wayne Enterprises' weapons department, and Bruce's butler, Alfred.
That makes five, which is plenty.
As for Rachel Dawes... Frankly, in the movies, Morin never saw her serve any real purpose. She had a good heart, but no flexibility, always getting herself into trouble without the ability to deal with it, making a mess of things, and leaving Bruce to clean it up.
Of course, Bruce was a bit of a simpleton, too... but all of this hadn't happened yet and couldn't happen anymore.
Now that Morin was in this world, how could he let those things happen again? Any plot points he didn't like had to go!
"Haha..." Gordon gave an awkward laugh, unsure how to respond to Morin's words.
Five people to change Gotham? How was that possible? Gordon, of course, didn't believe it, but he couldn't just say so to Morin's face.
"Alright, the offer is open for a long time, but I'm sure it won't be long before you'll be asking to join," Morin said.
"Drive. We're going to the police station. I think Commissioner Loeb is probably planning to have a word with us."
At the police station, Loeb had arrived uncharacteristically early and went straight to his office, where he began searching for Morin's information on the private internal network.
Soon, Morin's information appeared on his computer screen.
Morin's file was just as it had been in his previous worlds: completely normal and without any irregularities.
Everything was valid. The only difference was that all the people who could verify Morin's existence were dead. The proof they left was valid, but they themselves were no longer in this world.
After seeing this... a cold sweat broke out on Loeb's back.
As police commissioner, Loeb had some knowledge of certain things, certain secrets. Combined with Flass's exaggerated speculation, it was only natural that Loeb came to a conclusion about Morin's identity.
Could it be a coincidence that a person with such a file was here? Loeb didn't believe in coincidences.
He was convinced that Morin was a member of a secret organization, a government agency, who had joined the Gotham Police Department to investigate the city's internal affairs!
Both Morin's file and his skills proved this!
"What am I supposed to do..." Loeb thought to himself. He didn't want to be the target of such a powerful agency!
Just as he was thinking, a knock on the door interrupted his train of thought.
"Come in," Loeb said.
The door opened, and it was Flass.
"I've put Hugh Haas in the interrogation room. Here's the indictment," Flass said, handing the indictment to Loeb for his signature.
After that, the police would prosecute Hugh Haas, send him to court, and wait for a verdict.
"Before, that new officer, Morin, said that this matter had to be handled within a week... Commissioner, have you found out who he is?"
"There's nothing wrong with his file, and that's the biggest problem," Loeb said with a serious expression, shaking his head.
"I followed up on everyone who assessed him or issued him a certificate, as well as all his social connections and family relatives, and I found that all of them are dead."
"MY GOD!" Flass was shocked.
"At this point, we can almost certainly conclude that he's from some powerful organization. Otherwise, he wouldn't have such a flawless background check that's also so real," Loeb shook his head.
"The problem I'm worried about now is how to deal with him."
